Broiler chickens in Brazil are generally reared from 1 to 42 days when they are exposed to procedures such as fasting, harvesting, crating and transport to slaughter. Maintaining homeostasis is of great importance for broiler survival under harsh environment especially prior to slaughter. Heat loss varies in the distinct parts of the body during the growth period, and it is related to the air temperature of the environment and to the amount of feather covering. This research aimed to study the surface temperature distribution using infrared thermographic image processing to characterize 42 day old broiler chicken surface temperature prior to slaughter. Broilers were reared for 42 days and prior to harvest and transport to slaughter the infrared surface temperature was recorded along the day. Data from the thermograms taken in feather and featherless regions were compared during the 42(nd) day of growth. High correlation between featherless regions and air temperature was found showing that these areas respond fast to changes in the rearing environment. Two functions were developed for predicting both surface temperature for featherless and feather covered areas of the broiler body parts.

Smart Feeding Unit for Measuring the Pecking Force in Farmed Broilers

Rogerio Torres Seber, Daniella Jorge de Moura, Nilsa Duarte da Silva Lima, Irenilza de Alencar Naas

Summary: A novel method for assessing broiler pecking force data during feeding was presented in this study. The smart feeding unit prototype efficiently collected, processed, and classified signals to continuously evaluate feed intake and generate information for estimating broiler performance. The average broiler pecking force, feed intake per pecking, and pecking rate were determined with the help of the prototype.

Computer-Vision-Based Indexes for Analyzing Broiler Response to Rearing Environment: A Proof of Concept

Juliana Maria Massari, Daniella Jorge de Moura, Irenilza de Alencar Naas, Danilo Florentino Pereira, Tatiane Branco

Summary: This study tested the impact of rearing-environment enrichment on broiler movement using computer vision-based indexes. The results showed that the simultaneous application of cluster and unrest indexes could monitor broiler movement under different environmental conditions. The study highlights the importance of considering environmental complexity in future computer-vision-based monitoring and alert systems for detecting heat stress in broiler production. More research is needed to evaluate the potential positive impact of environmental enrichment in poultry production, and recalibration of the computer vision system may be necessary for large group settings.

Summary: The study analyzes investment opportunities by considering variables that influence risk, using energy characteristics data from the Eurostat Data Browser. It identifies a gap in energy research and proposes a multicriteria analysis using the analytic hierarchy process (AHP). The results show that Malta and Estonia are the most suitable countries for investments in the energy sector.

Energy Assessment from Broiler Chicks' Vocalization Might Help Improve Welfare and Production

Summary: The objective of this study was to investigate chick vocalization during social isolation and different flock sizes. The results showed that chicks emitted different sounds and expended varying amounts of energy depending on their isolation or group status and the size of the flock. The most accurate classifier to predict flock density was found to be the Random Forest model.

Hybrid Metaheuristic Algorithm for Optimizing Monogastric Growth Curve (Pigs and Broilers)

Marco Antonio Campos Benvenga, Irenilza de Alencar Naas, Nilsa Duarte da Silva Lima, Danilo Florentino Pereira

Summary: Brazil is a major producer and exporter of pig and broiler meat. This study aims to optimize the growth curve model parameters for pigs and broilers through the use of a hybrid metaheuristic algorithm (SAGAC). Results show that the SAGAC algorithm provides better predictive data on pig and broiler production consistency compared to previous estimations. The use of SAGAC can optimize production planning and minimize costs.
