Photosystem I in low light-grown leaves of Alocasia odora, a shade-tolerant plant, is resistant to fluctuating light-induced photoinhibition

Ichiro Terashima, Mitsutoshi Matsuo, Yoshihiro Suzuki, Wataru Yamori, Masaru Kono

Summary: The study found that even in the absence of far-red light, photosystem I in leaves grown under low light conditions showed resistance to fluctuating light. These low-light leaves exhibited higher chlorophyll content, lower chlorophyll a/b ratios, lower cytochrome f/P700 ratios, and lower PSII/PSI excitation ratios.

Yuchen Qu, Kazuma Sakoda, Hiroshi Fukayama, Eri Kondo, Yuji Suzuki, Amane Makino, Ichiro Terashima, Wataru Yamori

Summary: Researchers have found that increasing the content of Rubisco activase without reducing the Rubisco content can improve the photosynthetic efficiency and growth performance of rice at high temperatures.

Minimizing VPD Fluctuations Maintains Higher Stomatal Conductance and Photosynthesis, Resulting in Improvement of Plant Growth in Lettuce

Takayasu Inoue, Motoo Sunaga, Mutsuhiro Ito, Yuchen Qu, Yoriko Matsushima, Kazuma Sakoda, Wataru Yamori

Summary: Moderate VPD fluctuation maintains plant growth and photosynthesis efficiency, while drastic VPD fluctuation causes a decrease in stomatal conductance and CO2 assimilation rate. Fine regulation of VPD is crucial for better plant growth by maintaining photosynthetic performance.

Gene co-expression network analysis identifies BEH3 as a stabilizer of secondary vascular development in Arabidopsis

Tomoyuki Furuya, Masato Saito, Haruka Uchimura, Akiko Satake, Shohei Nosaki, Takuya Miyakawa, Shunji Shimadzu, Wataru Yamori, Masaru Tanokura, Hiroo Fukuda, Yuki Kondo

Summary: Through co-expression network analysis, a new cambium-related regulatory module was identified, including the transcription factor BEH3, which plays a crucial role in the maintenance and stability of vascular stem cells. Further genetic analysis revealed that BEH3 and BES1 perform opposite functions in the regulation of vascular stem cells and the differentiation of vascular cells.

Degradation of the photosystem II core complex is independent of chlorophyll degradation mediated by Stay-Green Mg2+dechelatase in Arabidopsis

Ying Chen, Wataru Yamori, Ayumi Tanaka, Ryouichi Tanaka, Hisashi Ito

Summary: During leaf senescence, the degradation of photosystems and photosynthetic pigments proceeds in a coordinated manner, with the degradation of photosystem II core complexes regulated independently of the major chlorophyll degradation pathway. The study provides insights into the complex molecular mechanisms underlying the degradation of photosystems, which is an essential step during leaf senescence.

Drought stress reduces crop carbon gain due to delayed photosynthetic induction under fluctuating light conditions

Kazuma Sakoda, Kazuki Taniyoshi, Wataru Yamori, Yu Tanaka

Summary: Drought stress significantly reduced the maximum CO2 assimilation rate in soybean but not in rice. Under drought conditions, both crops showed an increase in A after a step increase in light, followed by a gradual decrease in A, resulting in the significant reduction of steady-state A in both rice and soybean. Additionally, drought stress delayed photosynthetic induction in both crops, despite having a relatively small impact on maximum A.

Optimum root zone temperature of photosynthesis and plant growth depends on air temperature in lettuce plants

Namiko Yamori, Christopher P. Levine, Neil S. Mattson, Wataru Yamori

Summary: The optimum root zone temperature for plant growth and photosynthesis is affected by air temperature. This study found that the best growth conditions for lettuce plants can be achieved by optimizing the root zone temperature depending on the air temperature. Furthermore, plants grown under 30/25 degrees C air temperature showed better photosynthetic characteristics compared to those grown under 25/20 degrees C air temperature.

Co-overproducing Rubisco and Rubisco activase enhances photosynthesis in the optimal temperature range in rice

Mao Suganami, Yuji Suzuki, Youshi Tazoe, Wataru Yamori, Amane Makino

Summary: The overproduction of Rubisco often leads to a decline in Rubisco activation, but co-overproducing Rubisco and RCA in transgenic rice plants can enhance photosynthesis within the optimal temperature range. The activation state of Rubisco plays a key role in CO2 assimilation under high-temperature conditions.
