The permanent increase in the exploitation of commercial fish species has led to the need for developing practical and effective tools for the sustainability assessment and management of the target fish populations. The aim of this study was to formulate an ESHIPPOfishing model which would provide a reliable assessment of commercial fish population sustainability and indicate the conservation priorities. The existing ESHIPPO model was modified by introducing a new Index of local sustainability of fish populations (ILSFP) which enables the selection of keystone populations and keystone habitats/ecosystems within the basin being investigated. We employed a self-organizing map (SOM) in order to visualize the spatial distribution of the keystone populations and keystone habitats/ecosystems for each fish species. Based on the ILSFP values, environmental specialization (ES) of a fish species and local environmental factors (HIPPO factors), the model estimates the degree of sustainability (DS) of commercial fish populations in the freshwater ecosystems of the western Balkan Peninsula. The results indicate a low degree of sustainability for the majority of commercial fish species of the Middle Danube Basin, especially Acipenser ruthenus and Hucho hucho. The ESHIPPOfishing model presents a cost effective conservation approach, formulated to be applicable to any kind of river basin. The application of the ESHIPPOfishing model provides a comprehensive insight into the viability of target fish populations, which would not only further improve the selection of conservation priorities, but also facilitate the management of aquatic ecosystems. Summary: The study shows that human activities intensification has a negative effect on biodiversity in pond ecosystems, impacting density and richness across all trophic levels. Direct effects primarily affect primary producers, while indirect effects mediated through water nutrients influence the diversity of invertebrate communities. Indirect effects through trophic network cascades are mainly observed within the fish community.

Summary: Lake Balaton, the largest shallow lake in Central Europe, is affected by the Zala River. The Kis-Balaton Water Protection System (KBWPS) was constructed to improve water quality, but toxic cyanobacterial blooms were still observed. The KBWPS acts as a significant buffering zone, protecting the water quality of Lake Balaton. Regular monitoring of cyanobacteria and cyanotoxins in this ecosystem is crucial.

Freshwater as a Sustainable Resource and Generator of Secondary Resources in the 21st Century: Stressors, Threats, Risks, Management and Protection Strategies, and Conservation Approaches

Doru Banaduc, Vladica Simic, Kevin Cianfaglione, Sophia Barinova, Sergey Afanasyev, Ahmet Oktener, Grant McCall, Snezana Simic, Angela Curtean-Banaduc

Summary: This paper provides a comprehensive overview of the threats, risks, and integrated water management elements in freshwater ecosystems. It discusses the impacts of human activities and conservation issues related to freshwater systems. The complex matrix of stressors, including pollution, habitat fragmentation, and unsustainable exploitation, significantly affects the qualitative and quantitative changes in freshwater ecosystems and their ability to sustainably provide products and services to human societies. Only internationally integrated policies, strategies, assessment, monitoring, management, protection, and conservation initiatives can prevent the long-term deterioration of Earth's freshwater resources.

On Bangia atropurpurea (Bangiales, Rhodophyta), the strictly protected red alga in Serbia

Aleksandra B. Mitrovic, Snezana B. Simic

Summary: The red alga Bangia atropurpurea was first observed in Serbia in 1991, with sporadic sightings in various locations over the years. More intensive research from 2017 to 2020 revealed its preference for habitats with running water, high oxygen levels, slightly alkaline conditions, low inorganic nutrients, and a wide range of temperature and conductivity values. Due to its limited distribution, low abundance, and threats from anthropogenic impacts and small hydropower plants, the species is considered endangered and strictly protected in Serbia.

Summary: This study investigates the relationship between dissolved organic matter (DOM) and Rare Earth Elements (REEs) in sediments from Yundang Lagoon, China. The results show four distinct fluorescent components, with protein-like substances being the most prevalent. Additionally, the total fluorescence intensity and LREE concentrations exhibit a synchronized increase from Outer to Inner to Songbai Lake core sediments. The findings demonstrate a strong correlation between DOM content and pollution levels.

An advanced global soil erodibility (K) assessment including the effects of saturated hydraulic conductivity

Surya Gupta, Pasquale Borrelli, Panos Panagos, Christine Alewell

Summary: The objective of this study is to incorporate soil hydraulic properties into the erodibility factor (K) of USLE-type models. By modifying and improving the existing equations for soil texture and permeability, the study successfully included information on saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ksat) into the calculation of K factor. Using the Random Forest machine learning algorithm, two independent K factor maps with different spatial resolutions were generated. The results show that the decrease in K factor values has a positive impact on the modeling of soil erosion rates.

Summary: Atmospheric PM2.5, which can generate reactive oxygen species (ROS), is associated with cardiorespiratory morbidity and mortality. The study found that both the mass concentration of PM2.5 and the DTT activity were higher during the heating season than during the nonheating season. Combustion sources were the primary contributors to DTT activity during the heating season, while secondary formation dominated during the nonheating season. The study also revealed that biomass burning had the highest inherent oxidation potential among all sources investigated.

Aluminium bioaccumulation in colon cancer, impinging on epithelial-mesenchymal-transition and cell death

Summary: This study investigated the presence of aluminum in human colon cancer samples and its potential association with biological processes involved in cancer progression. Aluminum was found in tumor areas of 24% of patients and was associated with epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT) and cell death. Additional analyses revealed higher tumor mutational burden and mutations in genes related to EMT and apoptosis in aluminum-positive colon cancers. Understanding the molecular mechanisms of aluminum toxicity may improve strategies for the management of colon cancer patients.
