We investigated the terrestrial influence on two chained deep ultraoligotrophic lakes of North Patagonia (Argentina) through the seasonal analysis of two pelagic allochthonous indicators: i) water color, as a proxy of allochthonous dissolved organic matter in lakes; and ii) the color to chlorophyll a ratio (Color:Chla), as an indicator of the relationship between allochthonous and autochthonous carbon pools. We also evaluated the potential transfer pathways of the allochthonous dissolved organic matter into the pelagic food webs of these deep lakes, including the natural zooplankton delta C-13 in the analysis. The dynamics of the allochthonous indicators were related to the precipitation regime, water level fluctuations, and hydrogeomorphic and catchment features of lakes Moreno East and Moreno West. The water color (absorbance at 440 nm) was extremely low (<0.28 m(-1)) in both lakes regardless of the season. However, precipitation and snowmelt regimes drove the increase and decrease of water color, respectively. A significant positive relationship between the zooplankton bulk delta C-13 with the water color would suggest an input of allochthonous organic carbon into the pelagic consumers. The incorporation of the dissolved allochthonous material into higher trophic levels is likely favored by the bacterivorous behavior of planktonic organisms, mixotrophic flagellates and ciliates, which dominate the pelagic food webs of these Patagonian lakes. Morphometric aspects, mainly the higher water residence time, led to lower values of allochthony in Moreno East compared to Moreno West, probably accentuated by its upper position in the lake chain. Overall, our results suggest that these allochthonous signals can bring insight into the magnitude of the interaction between terrestrial environments and lake ecosystems, even in extremely clear and ultraoligotrophic systems, such as the Andean Patagonian lakes. Validating an Evaporative Calibrator for Gaseous Oxidized Mercury

Jan Gacnik, Igor Zivkovic, Sergio Ribeiro Guevara, Radojko Jacimovic, Joze Kotnik, Milena Horvat

Summary: The study evaluated the performance of a newly developed calibration unit for HgCl2 gas concentrations higher than 1 µg m(-3) and found that the recovery rate is concentration-dependent, limiting its use for calibrating instruments for ambient GOM measurements. Additionally, the recovery rates for HgBr2 gas calibration were lower than for HgCl2 gas, suggesting a need for further development regarding the suitability for such calibration.

Using CDOM spectral shape information to improve the estimation of DOC concentration in inland waters: A case study of Andean Patagonian Lakes

Summary: For the past twenty years, lacustrine dissolved organic matter (DOM) has been a focus in various scientific disciplines due to its significance in carbon biogeochemistry and ecosystem functioning. The development of new satellites now allows for the evaluation of chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) in inland waters, which provides the opportunity to estimate DOM at appropriate spatiotemporal scales. This study evaluates the use of CDOM as a proxy for dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in seven Andean Patagonian lakes, and explores the relationship between CDOM absorption coefficients and DOC. The findings suggest that incorporating CDOM spectral shape information improves the estimation of DOC and has significant implications for environmental management, biogeochemical studies, and future remote sensing applications.

Chironomidae responses to volcanic ash fall: a case study from Northern Patagonia for consideration in paleolimnological reconstructions

Summary: Lacustrine environments in Northern Patagonia are affected by volcanic events from the Southern Volcanic Zone. Chironomid larvae, due to their environmental sensitivity and well-preserved chitinous cephalic remains, serve as important paleo-proxies. This study analyzed the impact of a recent volcanic eruption on the chironomid community, based on the accumulation of their cephalic remains following ash deposition. The results showed different chironomid responses to the volcanic deposition, suggesting caution in using chironomid assemblages for paleoreconstructions.

An advanced global soil erodibility (K) assessment including the effects of saturated hydraulic conductivity

Summary: The objective of this study is to incorporate soil hydraulic properties into the erodibility factor (K) of USLE-type models. By modifying and improving the existing equations for soil texture and permeability, the study successfully included information on saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ksat) into the calculation of K factor. Using the Random Forest machine learning algorithm, two independent K factor maps with different spatial resolutions were generated. The results show that the decrease in K factor values has a positive impact on the modeling of soil erosion rates.

Summary: Atmospheric PM2.5, which can generate reactive oxygen species (ROS), is associated with cardiorespiratory morbidity and mortality. The study found that both the mass concentration of PM2.5 and the DTT activity were higher during the heating season than during the nonheating season. Combustion sources were the primary contributors to DTT activity during the heating season, while secondary formation dominated during the nonheating season. The study also revealed that biomass burning had the highest inherent oxidation potential among all sources investigated.

Summary: This study investigated the presence of aluminum in human colon cancer samples and its potential association with biological processes involved in cancer progression. Aluminum was found in tumor areas of 24% of patients and was associated with epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT) and cell death. Additional analyses revealed higher tumor mutational burden and mutations in genes related to EMT and apoptosis in aluminum-positive colon cancers. Understanding the molecular mechanisms of aluminum toxicity may improve strategies for the management of colon cancer patients.
