Summary: Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is a fast, highly sensitive, and quantitative technology for trace chemical detection. Integrating SERS into portable devices allows for rapid and accurate on-site screening of illicit and abused drugs by law enforcement and emergency room personnel. In this study, a gold sol-gel capillary was used to measure aqueous solutions of 14 high-priority drugs, and it was found that the sensitivity requirements for saliva analysis were met.

Summary: A methodology based on ultrasound-assisted extraction with ethanol and DF-ATR-FTIR measurement was developed for fast evaluation of non-conventional solid-sized cocaine samples. The method provides quantitative results in less than three minutes with a low limit of detection of 1.6 μg/g. The greenness of the proposed procedure was evaluated using analytical ecoscale, GAPI, and AGREE.

Summary: The intrinsic heterogeneity of many nanoformulations poses challenges in characterizing them at both the single particle and population levels. However, the development of advanced techniques, such as label-free single particle automated Raman trapping analysis (SPARTA), can provide valuable information in understanding and describing nanomedicine heterogeneity. This technique allows for simultaneous measurement of the nanocarrier and cargo, enabling the characterization of loading and release heterogeneity in nanomedicines.

Summary: Small plastic particles are commonly found in marine and freshwater ecosystems and their inhabitants. This study tested ten extraction protocols for microplastics from biota in order to assess their suitability for digesting a wide range of seafood species. The most suitable protocol was found to be an enzymatic-alkaline approach, which efficiently digested the seafood matrix without significant additional cost or labor, with negligible degradation of most commercially relevant polymers.

Summary: A mid-infrared photothermal-fluorescence in situ hybridization (MIP-FISH) platform is developed for simultaneous identification and metabolic analysis of microbes with single-cell resolution and high throughput. By improving MIP imaging, isotopically labeled compounds incorporated into proteins of individual bacterial cells can be sensitively detected, while FISH labeling with rRNA-targeted probes enables the identification of the analyzed cells. In proof-of-concept experiments, MIP-FISH successfully discriminates and identifies labeled bacterial cells within a complex human gut microbiome sample based on the clear spectral red shift in the protein amide I region caused by incorporation of 13C atoms from 13C-labeled glucose. This study opens up new opportunities for single-cell structure-function analyses in microbiology.
