Summary: This study aimed to evaluate if omega-3 supplementation can prevent relapse of alcohol use disorder after hospital discharge. The results showed that the group receiving omega-3 had fewer days of alcohol consumption at 2 and 3 months after discharge. Further research is needed to confirm these findings.

Summary: Although there was a minor reduction in hypomania scores in the omega-3 PUFA group compared to placebo, there is little evidence to suggest that omega-3 PUFAs supplementation has a prophylactic benefit in bipolar disorder.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between relapse, cognitive function, and cognitive reserve in schizophrenia patients. The results showed that higher personal cognitive reserve mitigated the negative effects of relapse on attention performance, while higher cognitive reserve (both personal and familial) improved processing speed and visual memory in patients who did not relapse. These findings provide evidence for the protective effect of cognitive reserve over the course of the illness.

Summary: This study developed perilla fruit oil (PFO)-fortified soybean milk and evaluated its sensory acceptability and health outcomes. The results showed that the PFO-fortified soybean milk had high overall acceptance and was associated with decreased levels of triglycerides and reactive oxygen species, as well as increased phagocytosis and serum antioxidant activity in healthy individuals. PFO supplementation in soybean milk was found to be more effective than black sesame supplementation.

Summary: Advanced psychiatric treatments are uncertain in preventing suicide among adolescents. A study in Sweden shows a negative correlation between adolescent excess suicide mortality and the usage of clozapine, ECT, and lithium among adolescents, especially males. The results suggest that early recognition and medication treatment may benefit suicide prevention in male adolescents with severe mental illness.

Summary: Schizophrenia is a chronic disorder that often requires long-term relapse-prevention treatment, but current approach may not be optimal for all patients. There is a need to identify biomarkers of relapse in schizophrenia for personalized treatment and develop therapeutics targeting its pathophysiology.

Summary: This study found that Omega-3 supplementation can reduce the incidence of liver disease, especially alcoholic liver disease, liver failure, and non-alcoholic liver disease. The study also demonstrated that Omega-3 supplementation has a protective effect in women carrying the liver-damaging variant PNPLA3 rs738409. Personalized treatment strategies may be valuable for individuals at risk of metabolic liver disease, but further evaluation in clinical trials is needed before recommending Omega-3 for the prevention of liver disease.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of antipsychotic treatment on brain structural changes in schizophrenia. The results showed plasticity in white matter and basal ganglia associated with antipsychotic treatment, possibly due to the dopamine blocking actions of these drugs. Cortical changes were more closely related to the neurodevelopmental aspects of the illness.

Summary: This study assessed the rate and correlates of distressing psychotic-like events (PLEs) in a non-clinical population in Lagos, Nigeria. The study found that clinically significant PLE symptoms are relatively common in non-help-seeking Nigerian adults, and factors like age, gender, family history, cannabis use disorder, and general substance use disorders are independently associated with clinically significant PLEs.

Summary: This study identified two neuroanatomical signatures derived from machine learning that are associated with the neurodevelopmental and treatment-responsive components of schizophrenia. Signature 1 is associated with widespread grey matter volume reductions, while Signature 2 is associated with larger basal ganglia and internal capsule volumes. Patients had higher expression of Signature 1 compared to controls, while Signature 2 expression significantly increased with treatment.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of iron and omega-3 fatty acid deficiencies on behavior and brain monoamines in rats during early development. The results showed that iron deficiency affected sucrose preference, anxiety, and social behavior in offspring, while omega-3 fatty acid deficiency affected social behavior in female offspring. These effects may be attributed to disturbances in brain neurochemistry and may be sex-specific.
