We report evidence that auditory verbal hallucinations (AVH) in schizophrenia patients are perceptual distortions lateralized to the left hemisphere. We used a dichotic listening task with repeated presentations of consonantvowel syllables, a different syllable in the right and left ear. This task produces more correct reports for the right ear syllable in healthy individuals, indicative of left hemisphere speech processing focus. If AVHs are lateralized to the left hemisphere language receptive areas, then this should interferewith correct right ear reports in the dichotic task, which would result in significant negative correlations with severity of AVHs. We correlated the right and left ear correct reportswith the PANSS hallucination symptom, and a randomly selected negative symptom, in addition to the sum total of the positive and negative symptoms, in 160 patients with schizophrenia. The results confirmed the predictions with significant negative correlations for the right ear scoreswith the PANSS hallucination item, and for the sum total of positive symptoms, while all other correlationswere close to zero. The results are unambiguous evidence for AVHs as aberrant speech perceptions originating in the left hemisphere. (C) 2012 Elsevier B. V. All rights reserved.

Summary: The study replicated that JTC bias is associated with familial liability for psychosis, and this association is stronger in individuals with higher levels of delusional ideation. The association between JTC bias and sibling status is not stronger in those with higher levels of hallucinatory experiences.

Summary: The study found that facial emotion recognition deficits may serve as an intermediate phenotype for schizophrenia using a proxy genetic risk approach. However, no significant association was observed between facial emotion recognition and polygenic risk score for schizophrenia. Further research should investigate the genetic mechanisms underlying facial emotion recognition phenotypes trans-diagnostically.

Summary: In this study, a two-stage genome-wide association study was conducted to identify common variants associated with schizophrenia. The results revealed 287 distinct genomic loci and 120 genes likely to be involved in the development of schizophrenia. This research provides valuable insights into the pathophysiology of schizophrenia and offers a resource for further mechanistic studies.

Summary: This study aims to investigate the associations between early childhood socioeconomic inequality indicators and the onset, persistence, and progression of psychotic experiences. The findings indicate that lower education, lower socioeconomic status, and living in slum-semi-urban areas are significantly associated with the onset and persistence of psychotic experiences. Additionally, individuals with lower education, lower socioeconomic status, no social insurance, and living in slum-semi-urban areas show faster progression of psychotic experiences.

The Influence of Medicine Approaches on Patient Trust, Satisfaction, and Loyalty

Ayse Sertan, Kemal Cek, Adile Oniz, Murat Ozgoren

Summary: This study investigated the evaluation of traditional and complementary medicine (TCM) methods among healthcare users in North Cyprus in terms of treatment effectiveness, patient trust, and patient satisfaction, and their effects on patient loyalty. Data were collected from 452 participants using scales and surveys. TCM was found to have a positive effect on treatment effectiveness, patient trust, and patient satisfaction. Patient trust and patient satisfaction positively influenced patient loyalty, while treatment effectiveness did not have a significant effect. Patient trust and patient satisfaction were found to mediate the relationship between TCM and patient loyalty, whereas treatment effectiveness did not. This study highlights the importance of attitude, trust, effectiveness, satisfaction, and loyalty in relation to TCM, and suggests that more research on patient behaviors is needed to improve health outcomes.

Dichotic-listening performance after complete callosotomy: No relief from left-ear extinction by selective attention

Rene Westerhausen, Mara Fabri, Markus Hausmann

Summary: The surgical section of the corpus callosum (callosotomy) often leads to left-ear extinction in dichotic listening. Previous studies have shown that this extinction can be overcome when patients selectively attend to the left-ear stimulus. However, a case study found no evidence of relief from left-ear extinction through selective attention in patients with complete callosotomy. This suggests that previous attention-improved left-ear recall in callosotomy patients may be due to suboptimal paradigms or residual callosal connectivity rather than a genuine attention effect.

Summary: This study compared the quality of life (QoL) of individuals with bipolar disorder (BD) and schizophrenia (SCZ) with healthy controls (HCs) and examined the impact of remission on QoL. The results showed that individuals with SCZ or BD had lower QoL scores, particularly in psychological and social domains, compared to HCs. SCZ patients also had lower scores in physical and environmental domains. Additionally, unremitted BD patients had lower QoL than unremitted SCZ patients. It is important to identify the similarities and differences in QoL between both patient groups in order to develop suitable treatments.
