Summary: Diabetes mellitus is a risk factor for dementia and can induce neuronal dysfunctions through inflammation and other processes. This study found that obese individuals with diabetes had reduced GLUT4 expression and neuronal soma area in the hippocampus. Inflammatory activation decreased GLUT4 expression and negatively affected genes related to neuronal function. Inhibiting HDAC3 could potentially improve GLUT4 expression and counteract the negative effects of inflammation.

Summary: This study investigates the relationship between life event stress (LES) and cortical thickness in individuals at clinical high risk for psychosis (CHR-P). The findings suggest that LES is associated with reduced baseline cortical thickness in both CHR-P and healthy individuals. It is also found that CHR-P status is linked with thinner cortex in select regions even after controlling for LES.

Summary: The study shows for the first time an increase in the expression of aryl hydrocarbon receptor gene and its target genes in human cell cultures after exposure to a histone deacetylase inhibitor (belinostat). Belinostat is currently being considered as a possible therapeutic agent for treating various types of gliomas, including glioblastomas.

Summary: Gender differences in clinical and psychosocial aspects of schizophrenia have been widely studied, but the findings are inconsistent and further research is needed. This study investigated gender differences in clinical, cognitive, and functional indices in a large sample of schizophrenia patients and healthy controls. Men with schizophrenia had an earlier onset, poorer premorbid adjustment, more severe symptoms, and different coping strategies compared to women. However, these differences did not have a significant impact on overall functioning and outcome.

Summary: It is still unclear whether electrocardiographic measurements can predict mortality in patients with chronic heart failure. This study aimed to investigate the association between ECG measurements and mortality in high-risk heart failure patients and found that heart rate, QRS duration, and absence of left ventricular hypertrophy were significantly associated with cardiovascular death.

Summary: Using an animal model, this study used ATAC-seq and RNA-seq technologies to uncover the epigenomic and transcriptomic changes in the amygdala following acute ethanol exposure. The results suggest that these changes, particularly in the candidate gene Hif3a, are associated with anxiolytic effects and may contribute to the development of alcohol use disorder.

Summary: A dysregulated HPA axis is closely related to psychiatric disorders and suicide, but the mechanisms behind this dysregulation are not fully understood. Decreased expression of the glucocorticoid receptor (GR) gene, which can be influenced by epigenetic changes, is a strong indicator of impaired HPA axis control. This study focuses on analyzing the GR gene's 5'UTR in teenage suicide-completers to determine expression levels and epigenetic modifications, as well as examining the expression and epigenetic state of the FK506-binding protein 51 (FKBP5). The findings suggest that epigenetic regulation of the GR gene may contribute to long-lasting modifications in an individual's HPA axis response to stress.
