Past-year intimate partner violence perpetration among people with and without depression: an individual participant data (IPD) meta-mediation analysis

Katherine R. K. Saunders, Sabine Landau, Louise M. Howard, Helen L. Fisher, Louise Arseneault, Geraldine F. H. McLeod, Sian Oram

Summary: The study found that depression is associated with increased risk of past-year intimate partner violence (IPV), with differences by gender. Among women, depression was associated with a 7.4% increase in past-year physical IPV perpetration, while among men the increase was 4.8%. Alcohol misuse did not mediate this association, but past-year IPV victimisation mediated the effect of depression on IPV perpetration among women.

Randomised controlled trial of the short-term effects of osmotic-release oral system methylphenidate on symptoms and behavioural outcomes in young male prisoners with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder: CIAO-II study

Lawrie, Craig Marsh, Caroline Kelly, Megan Mansfield, Clare McCafferty, Khuram Khan, Ulrich Muller-Sedgwick, John Strang, Grace Williamson, Lauren Wilson, Susan Young, Sabine Landau, Lindsay D. G. Thomson

Summary: This study investigated the efficacy of methylphenidate in reducing ADHD symptoms in young adult prisoners. The results showed that methylphenidate treatment did not significantly improve ADHD symptoms, indicating that routine use of this medication in this population is not supported. Further research is needed to evaluate the effects of higher dosing, treatment adherence, multi-modal treatments, and preventative interventions in the community.

Borrowing strength from clinical trials in analysing longitudinal data from a treated cohort: investigating the effectiveness of acetylcholinesterase inhibitors in the management of dementia

Ruth Knight, Robert Stewart, Mizanur Khondoker, Sabine Landau

Summary: This study proposes a novel method that combines electronic medical records and randomized controlled trials to analyze treatment effectiveness. The results demonstrate that this approach provides more accurate estimates of treatment effects.

Explaining the Association Between Fetal Growth and Childhood ADHD Symptoms: Cross-cohort Replication

Niamh Dooley, Colm Healy, Ross Brannigan, David Cotter, Mary Clarke, Mary Cannon

Summary: The study aimed to quantify the relative contributions of prenatal factors and familial confounds to the association between fetal growth and ADHD symptoms. Analyzing two independent cohorts, the research found that over a quarter of the association can be attributed to familial confounds. The study also revealed differences in the explanations of the fetal growth-ADHD association across cohorts.

Investigating the effectiveness of three school based interventions for preventing psychotic experiences over a year period - a secondary data analysis study of a randomized control trial

Summary: In this study, a secondary data analysis was conducted on a clustered-randomized control trial to investigate the effectiveness of school-based interventions in reducing and preventing psychotic experiences. The findings suggest that a screening and referral intervention significantly reduced the occurrence of psychotic experiences in adolescents. This study provides the first evidence for such school-based interventions.

The association between transient childhood psychotic experiences and psychosocial outcomes in young adulthood: Examining the role of mental disorders and adult attachment

Lorna Staines, Colm Healy, Ian Kelleher, David Cotter, Annette Burns, Mary Cannon

Summary: This study aimed to examine the relationship between transient childhood PE and adult psychosocial outcomes, comparing those with and without mental disorders. The results demonstrated that PE was associated with lower self-esteem, perceived social support from friends, and higher stress in platonic relationships. Additionally, mental disorders alone were not associated with any measure, suggesting the importance of PE in predicting psychosocial outcomes.

Mental health problems and admissions to hospital for accidents and injuries in the UK military: A data linkage study

Zoe Chui, Daniel D. Leightley, Margaret Jones, Sabine T. Landau, Paul McCrone, Richard Hayes, Simon Wessely, Nicola Fear, Laura Goodwin

Summary: Accidents are the most common cause of death among UK military personnel. This study found that mental health problems, such as common mental disorders and post-traumatic stress disorder, were associated with an increased risk of hospital admissions for accidents and injuries. Additionally, smoking was also associated with more visits to accident and emergency departments. Therefore, healthcare professionals should consider mental health and health damaging behaviors when treating military personnel after an accident.

Association of Complement and Coagulation Pathway Proteins With Treatment Response in First-Episode Psychosis: A Longitudinal Analysis of the OPTiMiSE Clinical Trial

Summary: The levels of plasma complement and coagulation pathway proteins may be related to the response to antipsychotic treatment. Higher levels of several complement and coagulation pathway proteins are associated with a reduction in psychotic symptoms and an improvement in functioning.

Incidence and Persistence of Psychotic Experiences in the General Population: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Lorna Staines, Colm Healy, Felim Murphy, Jonah Byrne, Jennifer Murphy, Ian Kelleher, David Cotter, Mary Cannon

Summary: This study aimed to determine the incidence and persistence of psychotic experiences (PEs) in the general population. The results showed that the annual incidence rate of PEs was 2 per 100 people, with the highest risk observed in adolescents. The persistence rate of PEs was 31% per year, with the highest rate also found in adolescents. Cannabis use was associated with the incidence of PEs, and persistent PEs were linked to multiple mental disorders.

Autopsy of a failed trial part 1: A qualitative investigation of clinician's views on and experiences of the implementation of the DAISIES trial in UK-based intensive eating disorder services

Summary: The DAISIES trial comparing different treatment approaches for severe anorexia nervosa was prematurely terminated due to recruitment difficulties. This qualitative study analyzed stakeholders' views and experiences to understand the challenges faced during the trial. The findings highlighted incompatible interests, changing standard practices, clinical management concerns, capacity issues, and the impact of COVID-19 as barriers to implementation. The study emphasizes the systemic-level challenges in research implementation and the additional limitations imposed by the pandemic.

Implementation of the trial emulation approach in medical research: a scoping review

Summary: Observational studies are an alternative to randomised controlled trials when they are not feasible. Valid causal inferences from observational data are challenging due to statistical biases. The 'target trial framework' provides a structured approach to design and analyse observational studies and prevent biases.

Chronic treatment with D2-antagonist haloperidol leads to inhibitory/excitatory imbalance in striatal D1-neurons

Catia Santa, Diana Rodrigues, Joana F. Coelho, Sandra I. Anjo, Vera M. Mendes, Diogo Bessa-Neto, Michael J. Dunn, David Cotter, Graca Baltazar, Patricia Monteiro, Bruno Manadas

Summary: This study used proteomic analysis and electrophysiological recordings to explore the effects of haloperidol in the striatum. The findings suggest that haloperidol not only reduces the excitability of striatal medium spiny neurons expressing dopamine D2 receptors but also affects D1-MSNs by altering the ratio of inhibitory/excitatory synaptic transmission. The slow remodeling of D1-MSNs may explain the delayed therapeutic effect of haloperidol.
