Ring-opening polymerization methods for all known reactive silicon - carbon heterocycles are considered. The data concerning the catalytic polymerization of silicon-containing cyclic monomers published in the last 15 years are generalized. The results of investigations of polymerization mechanisms are presented, the properties of polymers are described and examples of their practical use are given. The bibliography includes 206 references.

Low-melting phthalonitrile monomers containing maleimide group: Synthesis, dual-curing behavior, thermal and mechanical properties

Summary: Novel dual-functional phthalonitrile monomers containing a maleimide group were synthesized and characterized, showcasing a combination of bismaleimide resins' mechanical properties and phthalonitriles' thermo-oxidative stability. The copolymerization of maleimide groups via ene reaction and ring-opening amidation allowed the formation of a polymeric system with high impact strength, flexural strength, and excellent thermal properties.

Summary: By adjusting reaction conditions, a series of multiblock copolymers with different compositions and lengths can be synthesized to study their structure, thermal properties, and mechanical properties. The results show that even nearly random copolymers can retain some crystalline structure.

Polymers based on exo-silicon-substituted norbornenes for membrane gas separation

Marina A. Guseva, Dmitry A. Alentiev, Danila S. Bakhtin, Ilya L. Borisov, Roman S. Borisov, Alexey V. Volkov, Eugene Sh. Finkelshtein, Maxim V. Bermeshev

Summary: Silicon-substituted polynorbornenes are polymeric membrane materials with combined properties of glassy and rubbery polymers, showing attractive performance in CO2/N-2 separation and separation of gaseous hydrocarbons. A new synthesis approach allowed preparation of high-molecular-weight polymers based on pure exo-isomers of Si-containing norbornenes, and their gas transport properties were studied. The influence of substituent orientation and nature on membrane properties was evaluated, with additional data on BET, SEM, WAXD, and fractional free volumes reported.

Switching on/switching off solubility controlled permeation of hydrocarbons through glassy polynorbornenes by the length of side alkyl groups

Summary: The length of the alkyl side group plays a key role in the gas separation performance, with shorter side-alkyl groups leading to higher gas permeability. Surprisingly, vinyl-addition polynorbornene with methyl groups displayed both higher CO2 permeability and higher CO2/CH4 selectivity, contradicting traditional trade-offs. The solubility-controlled permeability of hydrocarbons is another notable feature, particularly in polymers with alkyl-substituents larger than ethyl-groups.

Summary: The reaction of 1,3,5,7-cyclooctatetraene with silicon-substituted ethylenes was studied, resulting in the successful synthesis of a silicon-substituted monomer containing a high percentage of endo-isomer. The metathesis polymerization mediated by catalysts yielded a new polymer with bulky bicyclic fragment and predominantly trans-double bonds in the main chain.

Bisphthalonitrile-based Thermosets as Heat-resistant Matrices for Fiber Reinforced Plastics

B. A. Bulgakov, O. S. Morozov, I. A. Timoshkin, A. V. Babkin, A. V. Kepman

Summary: This review focuses on the processes of producing heat-resistant matrices for fiber reinforced plastics using phthalonitrile monomers and comonomers, and discusses polymerization behaviors with various initiators and temperature modes. It also compares the properties of glass fiber reinforced plastics (GFRP) and carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP) obtained through curing of different phthalonitriles.
