The effects of harvesting methods were evaluated on losses and damage in sugarcane after harvesting. The IAC86-2480 cultivar was evaluated, in its third cut, in November, 2006. Three herbage harvesting methods were evaluated: manual cutting, mechanical cutting using a harvester and mechanical followed by manual cutting. After harvesting, the material was weighed and separated into fractions of stalks, green leaves and straw. The damage under sugarcane ratoons was evaluated by counting of the number of damaged stalks, uprooted stalks and whole plants left on the central lines of the plot. Treatments were assigned to experimental units (136.5 m(2)) according to a complete randomized block design, with six replications. The harvested yield and total biomass available were 80.7 t/ha and 90.3 t, respectively (average data). The total losses were higher for the mechanical followed by manual cutting as herbage harvesting method, representing 18.5% of the total harvested biomass. However, when compared on a DM basis, there were no differences among herbage harvesting methods. The quantitative and relative losses of green leaves and straw were similar among herbage harvesting methods. There was difference among herbage harvesting methods for stalk fraction, showing relative loss values of 1.5% for manual cutting, 7.6% for mechanical cutting, and 12.7% for mechanical followed by manual cutting, in relation to the harvested yield. The number of damaged and uprooted stalks was higher for mechanical followed by manual cutting as herbage harvesting method. The mechanical method significantly increased the number of plants left in the field. Due to the lower losses generated by the mechanical cutting using a harvester followed by manual cutting (up to 8% on DM basis) than the manual method, the performance of the mechanical harvesting method ( with or without manual cutting after arvesting) is considered satisfactory.

Heat stress on breeding value prediction for milk yield and composition of a Brazilian Holstein cattle population

Mayara Salvian, Robson Mateus Freitas Silveira, Julina Petrini, Gregori Alberto Rovadoscki, Laiza Helena de Souza Iung, Johanna Ramirez-Diaz, Eula Regina Carrara, Simone Fernanda Nedel Pertile, Laerte Dagher Cassoli, Paulo Fernando Machado, Gerson Barreto Mourao

Summary: Due to the high milk production of Holstein cows, many countries import semen to improve local dairy herds. The strategy would be more effective if the environment conditions during bull selection were the same as those in which the semen is used. Failure to consider the genotype by environment interaction may result in variation in estimated breeding values, potentially reducing selection response.

Summary: The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of successive heat waves on the thermoregulation and hormonal responses of non-pregnant and pregnant ewes. Weather variables and physiological variables were measured, including rectal and tympanic temperatures, respiratory rate, and serum levels of triiodothyronine (T3) and prolactin. The results showed that physiological variables were higher under heat wave conditions, with core body and tympanic temperatures being affected by changes in air temperature. However, T3 and prolactin levels were not influenced by heat waves, and rectal temperature and respiratory rate were highest in non-pregnant ewes. Overall, the Santa Ines breed demonstrated the ability to tolerate heat waves without severe signs of thermal stress.

Summary: Traditionally, breeding values are estimated using the numerator relationship matrix, but with genomic information, markers can be included for more accurate estimation. This study compared different methods for estimating breeding values in a broiler population, using various densities of SNP and whole-genome sequence data. Results showed that using 10% of the high-density array can yield unbiased and accurate breeding values.

Summary: Genomic tools, such as genome-wide association studies (GWAS), can aid in selecting animals genetically resistant to heat stress. This study compared the variance explained by SNPs and direct genomic breeding values (DGVs) at two temperature and humidity index (THI) levels. Using records from Holstein cows, the GWAS results showed minimal differences in SNPs and explained variances between the two THI levels. The study recommends further research with a larger number of animals and at more extreme THI levels.

Summary: Pigs are used as an animal model for studying metabolic diseases in humans. This study investigated the effects of different types of oils (canola, fish, and soybean oils) on pig gene expression and identified the impacted metabolic pathways. The results provide insights into the biological mechanisms underlying the effects of dietary oils on gene expression in pigs.

Summary: The aim of this study was to evaluate the feed quality of reconstituted corn grain silage (RCGS) treated with chemical additives and stored for different lengths of time. The results showed that increasing the storage time from 15 to 60 days improved the starch and dry matter degradability of the RCGS. The additive Mycoflake increased the availability of nutrients, and polysorbate 80 showed potential as an antimicrobial agent in silages.

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of different lipid sources on gene expression in porcine skeletal muscle tissue using RNA-Seq, and identified differentially expressed genes involved in metabolic pathways and biological processes. Addition of fish oil in pig diets resulted in intramuscular lipid with a higher composition of certain fatty acids. Blood parameters showed lower cholesterol and HDL content in the fish oil group compared to the other two groups. Enrichment analysis revealed differentially expressed genes related to lipid metabolism, metabolic diseases, and inflammation, as well as specific gene functions and altered blood parameters in each group.

Summary: The study estimated genetic parameters for egg production, egg quality, and eggshell colors in Brazilian laying hens. The heritabilities were low to moderate, genetic correlations among eggshell quality traits were moderate to high, and genetic correlations between eggshell color and eggshell quality traits were low. These results suggest the importance of considering genetic correlations and economic relevance in breeding schemes.

Summary: The addition of sodium nitrite and hexamine as an additive in guinea grass silage had a significant impact on fermentation and chemical composition. The maturity stage of the grass also interacted with the additive dose in influencing silage traits. The study concludes that the application of the additive at a regular dose effectively restricts the development of undesirable microorganisms and reduces dry matter losses during fermentation.
