Summary: Adolescents who befriend drug using peers may be at risk for initiating and continuing substance use. This study found that drug use homophily among justice-involved boys is associated with a greater variety of subsequent substance use, but only among those with a history of substance use. The findings highlight the importance of guiding justice system programming to reduce substance use among adolescent offenders.

Summary: Substance use in adolescents has been affected by the pandemic, with fewer teens starting to use substances due to reduced opportunities for social use during stay at home orders. However, prolonged isolation at home has intensified substance use for certain adolescents, especially those who had prior substance use, experienced material hardship, or reported higher pandemic-related stress. The adverse effects of pandemic isolation, anxiety, and developmental disruption are expected to have long-term consequences for adolescent substance use. Healthcare providers can address these issues by using existing screening and brief intervention strategies, as well as innovative telehealth approaches to improve care for adolescents with substance use disorder.

Summary: This study examines the longitudinal associations between parenting, adolescent sensation seeking, and substance use, and explores the moderating role of adolescent temperament. The findings suggest that parenting is directly and indirectly related to adolescent substance use through sensation seeking, and these indirect associations are influenced by adolescent temperament. This study contributes to the understanding of the key factors and developmental paths of adolescent substance use across different cultural contexts.

Summary: Women with schizophrenia or other psychotic disorders have different patterns of substance use and substance use disorders compared to men. Substance use and substance use disorders are less common in women, but may be underdiagnosed. Substance use, especially cannabis, may have a more negative impact on the disease course and prognosis in female patients. Treating substance use disorders in female patients with schizophrenia may be more challenging and have a negative impact on prognosis.
