The post-exercise recovery consists in restoring the body systems to baseline condition, providing balance and preventing injuries installation and, in that sense; it becomes an important aspect of every fitness program, at any levels of performance, but especially in higher levels. The objective of this review was to gather information and to describe the responses provided by post-exercise recovery methods, such as cryotherapy, contrast water immersion, massage and active recovery, providing an update on this issue. MedLine, Scielo and Lilacs databases were used, as well as the SportsDiscus list of journals. Only randomized controlled and non-controlled clinical essays, in addition to review articles concerning the proposed topic were included. Our choice was for the search terms: cryotherapy, massage, active recovery, thermotherapy, immersion and exercise, individually and combined. It was observed that some studies report that cryotherapy is harmful concerning post-exercise recovery, once it reduces performance immediately after the technique application. On the other hand, studies point it as being beneficial due to its reduction in the creatine kinase level after exercise, avoiding hence muscle damage. Concerning contrast water immersion, although it presents significance when it comes to blood lactate removal, its effectiveness needs to be better discussed. Regarding massage and active recovery, the main described biases relate to the pressure and intensity of the exercise, respectively. Among the techniques, contrast water immersion and active recovery seem to have similar effects concerning lactate removal and creatine kinase decrease. It is highlighted that the exposure time is crucial for all methods. However, several studies do not try to identify the real physiological effects promoted by the techniques, having them in limited use. Therefore, the inconsistency of the results found suggests that the assessed variables used as a recovery method should be better controlled.

Association Between Different Domains of Physical Activity and Body Adiposity Indicators in Breast Cancer Survivors

Daniela Tanajura Caldeira Silva, Luiz Carlos Marques Vanderlei, Mariana Romanholi Palma, Fernanda Elisa Ribeiro, William Rodrigues Tebar, Giuliano Tavares Tosello, Diego Giulliano Destro Christofaro

Summary: This study analyzed the relationship between different domains of physical activity (PA) and adiposity indicators in breast cancer survivors. The results showed that breast cancer survivors with higher levels of PA in leisure-time activity/sport had lower body fat percentage, BMI, waist circumference, and waist-to-height ratio. Similar results were observed in PA during transportation and overall PA level. There was no correlation between PA at work and adiposity indicators.

Summary: This study investigates the association between physical activity level and musculoskeletal pain, sleep quality, and migraine during the COVID-19 pandemic in college students. The results suggest that social isolation may worsen painful symptoms, sleep quality, and migraine. Additionally, there is strong evidence showing that reduced physical activity during the pandemic is associated with sleep quality, musculoskeletal pain, and migraine frequency.

What Parameters Influence the Effect of Cold-Water Immersion on Muscle Soreness? An Updated Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Natanael P. Batista, Flavia A. de Carvalho, Aryane F. Machado, Jessica K. Micheletti, Carlos M. Pastre

Summary: This study conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to determine the efficacy of cold-water immersion (CWI) on muscle soreness management. The results showed that CWI was superior to control in reducing muscle soreness, regardless of water temperature and protocol. Short and medium immersion times and endurance exercises yielded positive effects, while longer immersions time did not.

Leptin, Adiponectin, and Melatonin Modulate Colostrum Lymphocytes in Mothers with Obesity

Gabrielle do Amaral Virginio Pereira, Tassiane Cristina Morais, Eduardo Luzia Franca, Blanca Elena Guerrero Daboin, Italla Maria Pinheiro Bezerra, Rafael Souza Pessoa, Ocilma Barros de Quental, Adenilda Cristina Honorio-Franca, Luiz Carlos de Abreu

Summary: Pregnancy complicated by obesity leads to negative gestational and neonatal outcomes, as well as a decrease in CD4+ T-lymphocytes. This study investigates how maternal obesity affects colostrum lymphocytes and the intracellular mechanisms of lymphocyte modulation. The results show that maternal obesity reduces T-lymphocytes and TCD4+ in colostrum and inhibits cell proliferation, but these effects can be restored by hormones such as leptin, adiponectin, and melatonin.

Cardiac Behavior and Heart Rate Variability in Elderly Hypertensive Individuals during Aerobic Exercise: A Non-Randomized Controlled Study

Paulo Evaristo de Andrade, Juliana Zangirolami-Raimundo, Tassiane Cristina Morais, Luiz Carlos De Abreu, Carlos Eduardo Siqueira, Isabel Cristina Esposito Sorpreso, Jose Maria Soares Junior, Rodrigo Daminello Raimundo

Summary: The aim of this study was to analyze the autonomic modulation of heart rate in hypertensive elderly individuals during and after a session of aerobic exercise, and to compare it with elderly individuals without cardiovascular or metabolic disease. The results showed that after exercise, elderly individuals without cardiovascular and metabolic diseases had a decrease in parasympathetic modulation and global heart rate variability, but it restored within 30 minutes of post-exercise recovery. We concluded that there was no difference in autonomic modulation and global heart rate variability between elderly individuals without cardiovascular and metabolic diseases and hypertensive individuals after a bout of aerobic exercise.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate disordered eating and related factors among Brazilian university students during the early stage of the COVID-19 pandemic. The data was collected through online surveys using a semi-structured questionnaire between May and June 2020. A total of 936 students were included in the analysis. Results showed that experiencing flu-like symptoms (OR = 1.605), negative mood changes (OR = 1.628), weight gain (OR = 1.739), obesity (OR = 3.089), following fitness/health profiles on social media (OR = 2.050), having inadequate body perception (OR = 2.416), and body dissatisfaction (OR = 2.612) increased the likelihood of having higher scores on the disordered eating scale.

Association of coronary artery calcium with heart rate variability in the Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Adult Health- ELSA-Brasil

R. A. Hoshi, I. S. Santos, M. S. Bittencourt, E. M. Dantas, R. V. Andreao, J. G. Mill, P. A. Lotufo, I. M. Bensenor

Summary: Current data suggests that there is a relationship between heart rate variability (HRV) and coronary artery calcium (CAC) in the general population. This study aimed to further investigate this association using baseline data from the Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Adult Health (ELSA-Brasil). The results showed that participants aged 35 to 74 years with lower HRV values were more likely to have prevalent CAC, and this relationship may be influenced by sex and age factors.
