Epidemiology and Clinical Aspects of Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma

Summary: Mesothelioma is a cancer of the lining of the lungs caused by breathing in asbestos fibres, which remains a challenge in terms of treatment and has an uncertain survival time. The disease mainly occurs in males, with a clear risk associated with exposure to asbestos. There have been significant advances in diagnosis, but further research and treatment are still needed.

Epidemiologic roadblocks in studying elongated mineral particles and mesothelioma risk

Summary: Elongated mineral particles (EMPs) have attracted scientific interest due to their potential health effects and possible association with mesothelioma. This article provides an overview of current challenges in epidemiological assessments of EMP exposure and mesothelioma risk, including methodological aspects that need to be addressed in study design and analysis. Future research should focus on improving the definition of EMP exposure and accounting for other concurrent sources of carcinogen exposure when investigating the relationship between EMPs and mesothelioma.

Mesothelioma mortality within two radiation monitored occupational cohorts

Summary: Malignant pleural mesothelioma is a rare and aggressive malignancy that mainly affects the pleural lining of the lungs, commonly associated with exposure to biopersistent fibers like asbestos. Patients with chronic exposure to asbestos often have a long latency period with few symptoms, leading to advanced disease and poor overall survival. While modern targeted therapies have not been successful in treating MPM, molecular high-throughput profiling is revealing new biomarkers and actionable targets for potential diagnostic and therapeutic advancements.

Disparities in Survival Due to Social Determinants of Health and Access to Treatment in US Patients With Operable Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma

Summary: This study examined the survival disparities associated with social determinants of health and treatment access in patients with malignant pleural mesothelioma. The results showed that age, sex, race, income, and educational attainment were associated with patient survival. Surgical treatment and chemotherapy were associated with improved survival, as well as recent treatment period, greater travel distance from the hospital, and treatment at high-volume academic hospitals.

Ten-year incidence and assessment of safe screening intervals for diabetic retinopathy: the OPHDIAT study

Molecular profiling in lung cancer associated with cystic airspaces

It is important for policymakers to aim for reimbursement, conduct gender-specific campaigns, and invest in increasing knowledge about lung cancer and protective factors.
