Hong Kong is a compact and 'land-hungry' city where recycling has become an important measure for treating waste and reducing the demand on the limited landfills. The objectives of this paper are to extend the model of recycling attitude and behaviour to explain the relationship between perceived policy effectiveness and recycling behaviour. Previous studies on recycling attitude and behaviour had widely adopted the theory of planned behaviour (TPB) and the norm activation model (NAM), and drawn policy implications from them. Nevertheless, little research has been conducted to investigate the role of perceived effectiveness of policy measures in predicting recycling behaviour. To address this, a model that integrates the TPB and NAM was proposed in this study, and a street survey was conducted to investigate the case. The results illustrate that recycling intention is influenced by subjective norms, perceived behavioural control, moral norms, and awareness of consequences, as well as a newly proposed construct, namely perceived policy effectiveness. The study proved self-reported recycling behaviour (direct behaviour) and support for policy measures (indirect behaviour) are influenced by recycling intention. All in all the Government should provide more recycling bins, guidelines on recycling activities, and should accent what it has been doing to facilitate and encourage recycling. Exploring the challenges of implementing design for excellence in industrialized construction projects in China

Ibrahim Yahaya Wuni, Zezhou Wu, Geoffrey Qiping Shen

Summary: This study investigates the challenges of implementing design for excellence (DfX) methods in industrialized construction projects in China. The study identifies thirty-one challenges that are perceived as significant, including limited systematic rules, required additional commitment, code compliance complexities, higher design costs, and requirements for continuous design performance evaluation. The study also establishes four principal constraints: limited knowledge and organizational readiness, unsupportive entrenched industry practices, increased organizational financial burden, and deficits in bespoke technical requirements.

Green building policies in China: A policy review and analysis

Qidan Hu, Jin Xue, Rongsheng Liu, Geoffrey Qiping Shen, Feng Xiong

Summary: Green building policies are crucial for promoting green building, and this study analyzes the historical development of green building governance in China to identify solutions for future policy development. The study reviews and analyzes a total of 254 central and 1175 local policies from 2004 to 2021, highlighting the guiding role of the central government and the improvement of local policies in response to central initiatives. China has set ambitious targets, achieved progress, and established a carrot-and-stick system in green building governance. The study suggests focusing on economic inequality, regional cooperation, legal and regulatory systems, policy innovation based on regional heterogeneity, information disclosure mechanism, and market-oriented green finance system for further development of green building policies. This study provides a valuable reference for improving policies to promote green building globally.

The impact of neighborhood layout heterogeneity on carbon emissions in high-density urban areas: A case study of new development areas in Hong Kong

Ping He, Jin Xue, Geoffrey Qiping Shen, Meng Ni, Shengwei Wang, Han Wang, Lijie Huang

Summary: Under the context of climate change, there is a call for a paradigm shift towards environmentally sensitive urban design. This study examines the impact of neighborhood layout heterogeneity on carbon emissions, considering five indicators and different renewable energy application ratios. Through multiple linear regression analysis, it is found that building density and shape heterogeneity significantly influence neighborhood carbon emissions. The heterogeneity of building height hinders carbon reduction efforts, while the heterogeneity of building shape improves carbon reduction through facade solar energy collection. However, there is a trade-off in decision-making when designing low-carbon neighborhoods due to the opposite effects of layout heterogeneity on solar energy collection and building energy consumption.

The Impact of Mukbang Live Streaming Commerce on Consumers' Overconsumption Behavior

Daisy Lee, Calvin Wan

Summary: Food live streaming shopping, where hosts eat and promote products to viewers, has emerged as a new form of food marketing. Through three studies, the authors investigate the impact of mukbang live streaming on consumers' perceived value and subsequent impulse purchase and food consumption behavior, considering content, influencer, and channel factors. The findings reveal that non-ASMR videos with mukbangers conversing while eating regular food are more influential in enhancing perceived value and increasing impulse purchase and consumption. Additionally, credible and parasocial influencers significantly impact consumers' perceived value, leading to impulse purchase and consumption, regardless of the featured food.

Green consumption and sustainable development: The effects of perceived values and motivation types on green purchase intention

Peggy M. L. Ng, Cherry T. Y. Cheung, Kam Kong Lit, Calvin Wan, Ellesmere T. K. Choy

Summary: Daily green products have gained increased awareness, and understanding consumer perceived values and motivation types is crucial for promoting green purchase behavior. This study developed a research model integrating customer value theory and self-determination theory to explain green purchase intention. The findings showed that perceived values significantly predict perceived green product value, which, in turn, predicts different regulation types. Autonomous motivation was found to significantly predict green purchase intention. These findings have theoretical implications for understanding consumer behavior and practical implications for green businesses and governments.

Unveiling the economic and environmental impact of policies to promote animal feed for a circular food system

Alessandro Gatto, Marijke Kuiper, Corina van Middelaar, Hans van Meijl

Summary: This study examines the economic and environmental effects of transitioning towards more circular food systems in the European Union (EU27) by feeding animals with low-opportunity-cost feed and better utilizing local feed resources. The results show that providing subsidies for circularity and promoting the use of low-cost feed can increase animal production, but also have negative impacts on land use and emissions. On the other hand, promoting domestic feed sourcing through import tariffs can decrease animal production and greenhouse gas emissions in agriculture. However, complementary policies are needed to mitigate drawbacks and enhance benefits of a more circular agri-food system.
