Summary: In Japan, the incidence of varicella exhibits major and minor bimodal seasonal patterns. This study investigates the mechanisms of seasonality by analyzing the effects of school term and temperature on varicella incidence. The findings suggest that there are preferred temperatures for varicella transmission and an interactive effect of school term and temperature. It is necessary to investigate the potential impact of temperature elevation on the epidemic pattern of varicella, even in the northern part of Japan.

Summary: This study utilized random forest algorithm and remote sensing data to generate a topsoil map covering nearly 3.34 million square kilometers in the Middle East, based on data from over 5000 sites. The findings revealed that topsoils in the Middle East are characterized by sandy and loamy textures, low organic carbon levels, alkaline reactions, and high calcium carbonate content.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the mortality rates in Ukraine from 2020 to 2021. Excess mortality during the pandemic was predicted and compared with the actual reported counts. The results show three waves of excess all-cause mortality in Ukraine, with each wave being higher than the previous one and corresponding to waves of lab-confirmed COVID-19 mortality. The study also finds that pneumonia and circulatory system diseases contributed to the excess mortality, and alcohol-related mortality decreased during the pandemic.

Summary: This study evaluates the use of magnetic susceptibility (MS) as a tool for identifying areas with different potential for sugarcane yield and quality, as well as allocating varieties. The analysis of particle size and MS in the sampled area identified three groups with different yield and quality potential, and MS was found to be effective in differentiating these areas. Furthermore, MS was also found to significantly impact the performance of the same variety in different MS classes and the performance of different varieties in similar MS classes.

Summary: Accurate long-lead forecast of COVID-19 and possibly other infectious diseases is crucial for proactive planning. By addressing error growth, new variant emergence, and infection seasonality, we successfully generated retrospective predictions of COVID-19 cases and deaths for 10 representative US states six months into the future. These predictions consistently outperformed the baseline approach and demonstrated improved accuracy in probabilistic and point predictions. Real-time predictions made in October 2022 were in line with reported data, suggesting the effectiveness of the forecast methods developed here.

Summary: An infinite-horizon, multidimensional optimization problem with arbitrary yet finite periodicity in discrete time is considered, shown to be a special case of a more general class of contraction problems with unique solutions. Solutions are obtained through an iterative process, with special cases including the classical Bellman problem and its stochastic formulations. This approach extends the Bellman problem to the special case of non-autonomy represented by periodicity, facilitating treatment of seasonality in dynamic optimization and dynamic games.

Results showed a gradual decrease in mean steps per day (SPD) from adolescence to mid-thirties, with low-to-moderate tracking in short time spans. Additionally, individuals exhibited higher mean SPD on weekdays compared to weekends during the period from late adolescence to the mid-thirties.

Summary: The analysis of forest disturbance patterns in relation to precipitation seasonality is crucial for understanding the dynamics of African tropical forests under changing climate conditions and human activities. This study utilizes radar-based forest disturbance information to investigate the intra-annual relationship between precipitation and forest disturbance in a spatially and temporally explicit manner, especially in cloud-covered tropical regions. The results reveal a significant negative correlation between forest disturbance and precipitation, with areas closer to settlements showing a stronger correlation. These findings provide insights into the complex interactions underlying forest loss patterns and can support forest conservation and management in African rainforest countries in the face of climate change-induced precipitation pattern changes.

Summary: Aerobic exercise is effective in alleviating depressive symptoms in adults with major depression, particularly for those with increased symptom severity and a larger reward processing at baseline. Although aerobic exercise did not modify the reward processing and cognitive control, there is preliminary support for the utility of reward processing in predicting response to exercise as a treatment for depression.
