Chiroptera are one of the most diverse orders of mammals and a unique group within Mammalia that posses a wide geographic distribution and considerable variability in reproductive strategies. The aims of the present study were to characterise the male prostatic complex of the bat Myotis nigricans (Vespertilionidae) and evaluate seasonal variations in the prostatic complex of M. nigricans specifically. Twenty-three sexually mature specimens (four sample groups: winter, spring, summer and autumn) were subjected to macroscopic, microscopic, morphometric and ultrastructural analyses. The reproductive accessory glands of M. nigricans were found to be composed of a multilobed complex associated with the urethra and a pair of inguinal bulbourethral glands. The complex was composed of three bilobed prostatic regions (ventral, dorsolateral and dorsal) with no ampullary gland and seminal vesicles. This pattern of lobulation is very similar to that described for the prostate of rodents; however, it differs from that of other mammals and even other families of bats (e.g. Phyllostomidae and Molossidae). Each prostatic region in M. nigricans has unique and distinctive characteristics, which synchronise to establish the main reproductive peak of the species in summer. The data also indicated an asynchrony in the activity of primary and secondary reproductive organs in the annual reproductive cycle of M. nigricans in SAo Paulo State, Brazil.

Liver description in three neotropical anuran species: from anatomy to ultrastructure

Lara Zacari Fanali, Juliane Silberschmidt Freitas, Lilian Franco-Belussi, Sebastiao Roberto Taboga, Classius de Oliveira

Summary: This study described the morphological aspects of liver in three Neotropical anuran species and found that their anatomical and ultrastructural features are quite similar, but with differences in structural arrangements in histology. Understanding the hepatic morphology and ultrastructure in amphibians is crucial for detecting changes in experimental studies and inferring possible physiological or metabolic changes under adverse conditions.

Quantification of Urinary Sex Steroids in the Big Brown Bat (Eptesicus fuscus)

Lucas J. S. Greville, Larissa M. Bueno, Tyler Pollock, Paul A. Faure

Summary: This study reports the first urinary steroid profile in bats by quantifying 17 beta-estradiol (E-2) levels in captive male and female E. fuscus across their reproductive cycle. The research found that male bats had higher urinary E-2 levels than females, and adults had higher levels than yearlings. Seasonal differences in urinary E-2 levels were observed in nonpregnant females. These findings are important for understanding the reproductive cycling in bats.

Summary: In vitro studies have shown that omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids ([n-3] PUFAs) have antitumor effects, but their effects on prostate cancer remain controversial in epidemiological studies. This study found that a(n-3) PUFA-enriched diet could delay tumor progression in the early stages of prostate cancer in mice and reduce cell proliferation and hormone receptor expression.

Proteoglycans orchestrate remodeling of prostatic cytoarchitecture after androgenic blockade in old gerbils

Silvana G. P. Campos, Bianca F. Goncalves, Thalles Fernando Rocha Ruiz, Ellen Cristina R. Leonel, Daniele L. Ribeiro, Luiz Roberto Falleiros Junior, Rejane M. Goes, Sebastiao R. Taboga

Summary: This study evaluated changes in proteoglycan morphology and composition in the prostatic stroma of castrated gerbils. Results showed an increase in chondroitin sulfate frequency after androgen blockade and an increase in perlecan content. The length and shape of proteoglycans were also altered. These findings suggest that proteoglycans might respond to androgen deprivation independently of androgenic regulation.

High-lipid nutritional environment in different ontogenetic periods induce developmental programming of rat prostate at aging

Tatiane Pereira Scarpelli, Eloisa Zanin Pytlowanciv, Maria Etelvina Pinto-Fochi, Sebastiao Roberto Taboga, Rejane Maira Goes

Summary: Maternal obesity and high-fat diet during breastfeeding lead to stromal hyperplasia and diffuse acinar atrophy in the aging rat prostate, which is closely related to dyslipidemia and reduced testosterone levels. The high-lipid nutritional environment from intrauterine and throughout life facilitates the development of prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia and worsens degenerative changes in the gland.

Summary: Despite being highly diverse and widely distributed, the reproductive accessory glands (RAGs) of bats have received limited attention in research. This study aimed to analyze and compare the composition, anatomy, and histology of male RAGs in three cosmopolitan bat families (Vespertilionidae, Molossidae, and Emballonuridae). The results revealed that the RAGs of these bat species consist of an intra-abdominal prostatic complex, urethral glands, and inguinal bulbourethral glands, but lack ampullary glands or seminal vesicles. The prostatic complex varies in the number of regions and lobed structure among the species.
