The aim of this article is to show the opportunities for penetration of new renewable energy sources into the Brazilian energy mix, enabling it to continue generating a high quantity of clean energy compared to the world average. Different scenarios for the evolution of such sources in Brazil and in the world were analyzed within the 2010-2030 horizon. The study showed not only the benefits brought by these sources in terms of GHG emission avoidance but also the impact in terms of employment creation and the public investment necessary to obtain such benefits. Improvements to Modern Portfolio Theory based models applied to electricity systems

Gabriel Malta Castro, Claude Kloeckl, Peter Regner, Johannes Schmidt, Amaro Olimpio Pereira

Summary: With the increase in the use of renewable energies in electricity systems, studies have been conducted to determine the optimal technological and spatial mix, using Modern Portfolio Theory (MPT). However, these analyses often fail to address important aspects in energy planning. In this study, we propose several improvements to address these shortcomings and evaluate their impact. The results show that the new approach significantly differs from the traditional formulation, with a shorter range of acceptable standard deviation values and a higher probability of under-production for portfolios in regions with extreme standard deviations. Additionally, diversification plays a key role in smoothing output from portfolios of variable renewable sources.

Competitive Behavior of Hydroelectric Power Plants under Uncertainty in Spot Market

Marcelle Caroline Thimotheo de Brito, Amaro O. Pereira Junior, Mario Veiga Ferraz Pereira, Julio Cesar Cahuano Simba, Sergio Granville

Summary: This article analyzes agents' behavior in a competitive hydrothermal energy market, focusing on the difference between market behavior and cost-based model predictions, as well as the impact of agents' risk perception on market revenue. A case study using daily simulations of eight hydroelectric agents' strategies and bids in a central market operator was conducted to demonstrate the qualitative and quantitative examples of how risk perception and agent behavior can influence market behavior.

Allocative Efficiency towards Energy Transition: The Cases of Natural Gas and Electricity Markets

Amaro Olimpio Pereira, Rafael Cancella Morais, Bruno S. L. Cunha, Maria Bernadete Gomes Pereira Sarmiento Gutierrez, Mario Jorge Cardoso de Mendonca

Summary: Conventional economic theory suggests that the free market promotes allocative efficiency. However, energy markets with network industry characteristics require effective regulation. Liberalizing reforms in the OECD have reduced state ownership in the energy sector, but the functions of regulation and planning remain. This study examines the relationship between market liberalization and sustainability in the context of low-carbon energy transition using the SBM-DEA methodology. The results indicate that advanced markets with liberalization tend to have a more vigorous energy transition, such as the UK, Norway, Chile, Canada, and Colombia.

Pathways for deep decarbonization of the Brazilian iron and steel industry

Otto Hebeda, Bruna Silveira Guimara, Gustavo Cretton-Souza, Emilio Lebre La Rovere, Amaro Olimpio Pereira

Summary: Steel production is a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions and Brazil, as one of the world's largest steel producers, has unique energy sources including coal, electricity, and biomass. This study developed a bottom-up model to explore decarbonization pathways for the Brazilian steel industry. The model considers various measures such as energy efficiency technologies and innovative production routes constrained by raw material availability and technology diffusion. The results show that short-term greenhouse gas mitigation can be achieved through known technologies at negative costs, while innovative routes play a key role but come with higher costs. The study provides insights for policymakers towards decarbonization.

Summary: The study examined the impact of operating temperature, blending ratio, and catalyst addition on the distribution of products during microwave co-pyrolysis of Hydnocarpus de-oiled seed cake (HDSC) and Waste electrical and electronic plastic (WEEP). A new approach of using spent toner powder as a low-cost catalyst for waste treatment was proposed. The results showed that a 50:50 mixture ratio had significantly higher oil yield, which was further improved with catalyst addition. The catalytic co-pyrolysis process produced oil with comparable properties to commercial diesel fuel.

Summary: As the global population grows, the demand for food, energy, and water will increase significantly. However, limited land availability and competition for solar resources pose challenges to resource generation technologies. In the United States, both agriculture and solar energy production have adopted densification schemes to improve yields and energy output per unit of land. This research proposes an Agrivoltaic food and energy coproduction architecture that optimizes power generation while maintaining crop productivity by implementing ideal anti-tracking during critical growth periods. This technology offers a viable pathway for widespread solar implementation throughout the contiguous United States.
