The etiology of osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH) is multifactorial. Treatment of ONFH is disease stage dependent. For early stages, femoral head preservation procedures are preferred including core decompression, muscle pedicle grafting and de-rotational osteotomy. Core decompression with bone grafting is considered the gold standard. However, the results are inconsistence and unpredictable. An effective non-invasive method of treatment is imperative. Recently, extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) has shown beneficial effects in ONFH. ESWT improves pain and function of the hip and regression of the ONFH lesion. ESWT is more effective than core decompression with or without bone grafting, cocktail therapy that combined HBO, ESWT and oral alendronate is shown effective for patients with early osteonecrosis. The purpose of the article is to review, update and summarize the clinical treatment of ONFH using shockwave therapy. (C) 2015 IJS Publishing Group Limited. Published by Elsevier Ltd. Phytochemicals levels and biological activities in Hibiscus sabdariffa L. were enhanced using microbial fermentation

Hui-Chi Huang, Wen-Te Chang, Yi-Hsuan Wu, Bo-Cheng Yang, Mo-Rong Xu, Ming-Kuem Lin, Hsi-Jien Chen, Jai-Hong Cheng, Meng-Shiou Lee

Summary: In this study, microbial fermentation of Hibiscus sabdariffa L. calyx extract was used to enhance its phytochemical constituents and biological activity, resulting in increased antioxidant activity and phenolic content, especially with Galactomyces geotrichum inoculation. The optimized fermentation conditions included 1% eHS addition and static culture method. High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and enzymatic activity analysis showed that the improved biological activities of fermented eHS were mainly due to increased levels of phenolic compounds, flavonoids, anthocyanin and its aglycone derivatives. This is the first report to demonstrate the use of microbial fermentation to improve the biological functionalities of fermented eHS.

Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy Combined with Platelet-Rich Plasma during Preventive and Therapeutic Stages of Intrauterine Adhesion in a Rat Model

Yin-Hua Cheng, Ni-Chin Tsai, Yun-Ju Chen, Pei-Ling Weng, Yun-Chiao Chang, Jai-Hong Cheng, Jih-Yang Ko, Hong-Yo Kang, Kuo-Chung Lan

Summary: For the prevention and treatment of intrauterine adhesion, extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) transplantation have shown promising effects. These treatments can promote endometrial recovery and angiogenesis, reduce fibrosis, and inhibit inflammatory response. Additionally, in the preventive stage, these treatments can also increase the expression levels of vascular endothelial growth factor and progesterone receptor, while in the therapeutic stage, they can increase the expression levels of progesterone receptor, insulin-like growth factor 1, and interleukin 4.

Summary: Portulaca oleracea (PO) is a commonly used medicinal crop in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). However, it is often adulterated by other species, leading to a distortion of its identity. In this study, a quick assay called loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) was developed to authenticate the DNA of PO. The LAMP assay showed high specificity and sensitivity, making it suitable for the authentication of PO and its commercial products.

Confirming whether KLHL23 deficiency potentiates migration in urothelial carcinoma

Jei-Ming Peng, Sen-Yung Hsieh, Jai-Hong Cheng, Jia-Wun Luo, Yu-Li Su, Hao-Lun Luo

Summary: Deficiency of KLHL23 in invasive leading cancer cells promotes cell migration in urothelial carcinoma, leading to abnormal formation of lamellipodia, increased EMT phenotype, and migration. Lack of KLHL23 also abolishes the formation of actin stress fibers and enhances the mobility of cancer cells. KLHL23 seems to play a critical role in enhancing actin fibers and promoting focal adhesion complex formation in the invasive leading cells, impacting the overall survival in bladder UC patients.
