Summary: This comprehensive review of human adipose tissue fails to mention the role of the endocannabinoid system in fat metabolism. The endogenous cannabinoids and their receptors, found in both white and brown fat, have been recognized as key players in adipose tissue metabolism. Rimonabant, an inverse agonist of cannabinoid receptor type 1, has shown promising effects as a therapeutic target for obesity, dyslipidemia, and insulin resistance, although its clinical use was discontinued due to neuropsychiatric side effects.

Summary: This study aimed to identify modifiable risk factors for atrial fibrillation (AF) in the midlife general population and estimate their impact. The results showed that high systolic blood pressure, obesity with central obesity, and an inactive lifestyle were significantly associated with incident AF. Maintaining or achieving a lower burden of modifiable risk factors was associated with decreased AF risk.

Summary: This study compared the prevalence of pediatric obesity during the COVID-19 lockdown with the annual increases in obesity in NHANES. The changes in prevalence observed in two surveys during the lockdown were 28 to 63 times greater than the annual changes in obesity in NHANES. Increases in obesity were greater in Black and Hispanic youth than in White youth. The COVID-19 lockdown exacerbated the disparities in obesity among this age group.

Summary: This study analysed the safety of simultaneous bilateral total knee arthroplasty (SBTKA) surgery by comparing morbidly obese (MO) patients with obese patients. The results showed that SBTKA surgery is not feasible in morbidly obese patients due to the high complication rate and unsatisfactory clinical outcomes. Staged surgery should be preferred.

Summary: An epigenome-wide association study on monozygotic twins revealed that physical activity can promote systemic epigenetic alterations and impact metabolic risk factors. The study analyzed differences in body mass index, physical activity levels, and neighborhood walkability between twin pairs and identified DNA methylation alterations associated with reduced metabolic parameters. The study also identified genes related to vigorous physical activity, metabolic risk factors, and sex.

Summary: This study aimed to identify ethnicity-specific BMI cutoffs for obesity to prevent type 2 diabetes among non-White populations. The findings suggest that different ethnic populations have different BMI cutoffs equivalent to the risk of type 2 diabetes at a BMI of 30.0 kg/m(2) in White populations, highlighting the need for appropriate clinical surveillance for minority ethnic populations to optimize prevention and management of type 2 diabetes.

Summary: Noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) pose a significant public health challenge in Indonesia, and their risk factors are associated with COVID-19 severity and mortality. This study investigated the NCD risk profile among university employees in Indonesia and its relationship with contracting COVID-19. The findings revealed a high prevalence of NCD risk factors among university administrative employees, which increased their susceptibility to COVID-19. The study highlights the urgent need for a behavioral intervention program to manage NCD risk factors at the university level.

Summary: This study investigates the geographic disparities of COVID-19 risk and the associations between COVID-19 risk and socioeconomic, demographic, movement, and chronic disease factors in the Greater St. Louis Area of Missouri. The results show that there are geographic disparities in COVID-19 risk, and these risks are associated with sociodemographic factors, population movements, and obesity hospitalization risks. The findings highlight the importance of considering these factors in controlling and preventing COVID-19.

Summary: This study aimed to identify risk factors for hospitalization and severe complications in young adults (18-24 years old) diagnosed with COVID-19. The study found that hospitalized patients were more likely to have pre-existing medical conditions and higher BMI compared to healthy college athletes. Moreover, elevated BMI was associated with increased mortality.

Summary: In anorexia nervosa patients, serum levels of neuropeptides phoenixin (PNX) and spexin (SPX) were found to be decreased, with partial weight recovery leading to normalization of PNX concentrations but not SPX levels. These neuropeptides may play a crucial role in the etiology and course of anorexia nervosa.

Summary: The antidepressant effects of memantine in bipolar depression are promising, with both experimental and clinical evidence supporting its efficacy. The presented case study demonstrates that memantine can be an effective and safe adjunct treatment for mood stabilization in bipolar depression. This suggests that memantine may offer a new approach for patients who do not respond well to traditional medications.

Summary: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common neurodevelopmental disorder, and methylphenidate is the first-line drug for treatment. However, the adverse effects of methylphenidate therapy in adults have not been extensively described. This article reviewed the literature on the risks of methylphenidate therapy for adults with ADHD and found that side effects could include reversible ischemic stroke, myocardial infarction, and psychotic episodes.
