This manuscript explores in detail the polycondensation reactions of novel dicarboxylic acid and numerous aromatic diamines in imiazolium-based ionic liquids. The novel optically active aromatic polyamides (PA)s with flame retardancy properties were prepared via a oil bath heating method using a mixture of 1,3-dipropylimidazolium bromide ionic liquid and triphenyl phosphite (TPP) both as reaction media and activator. The main advantage of this polycondensation reaction is that this procedure is a one-pot reaction and we do not need to prepare diacid chloride. These polymers presented high thermal stability, with the decomposition temperature being above 400 degrees C, although slightly diminished compared with those of related aromatic PAs which do not contain any pendent groups. Furthermore, the interpretation of kinetic parameters (E, Delta S, Delta G, Delta H and reaction mechanism) of thermal decomposition stages of aforementioned PAs have been evaluated. For this purpose thermogravimetric analysis is a technique widely used because of its simplicity and the information afforded by a simple program. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
