Summary: As cancer is increasingly seen as a metabolic disorder, serum metabolite profiling is proposed as a viable method for detecting cancer. In this study, a machine learning model using mass spectrometry-based liquid biopsy data is reported for pan-cancer screening and classification. The Multiplexed Nanomaterial-Assisted LDI for Cancer Identification (MNALCI) achieves high sensitivity and specificity for distinguishing cancers from healthy controls and accurately identifying the tissue of origin of tumors. This high throughput assay shows promising potential for non-invasive cancer diagnosis.

Summary: The imaging of biological tissues using mass spectrometry imaging (MSI) techniques allows for the visualization of the distribution of various metabolites, drugs, lipids, and glycans in complex samples. MSI methods like DESI-MSI and MALDI-MSI provide high sensitivity and the ability to evaluate/visualize multiple analytes in a single sample, overcoming limitations of classical microscopy techniques. This review discusses the application of DESI-MSI and MALDI-MSI in evaluating exogenous and endogenous molecules in biological samples, providing technical insights and recent research findings.

Summary: This study utilized innovative laser mass spectroscopy methods to detect and quantify mycotoxins on building materials, with (109)AgNPs SALDI MS showing the lowest detection limits and highest signal intensity. The (109)AgNPs method may serve as an alternative to commonly used MALDI MS and liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry LC-MS/MS for mycotoxin determination in the future.

Summary: This study developed a new method using MALDI-MS and PLS-R to quantitate triacylglycerols in blended oils, allowing simultaneous quantitation of multiple compositions with good limits of detection. The new method enables direct analysis of blended oils, rapid analysis of samples, and accurate quantitation of low-abundance oil compositions and blended oils with similar fatty acid contents, compared to conventional methods.

Summary: A matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry imaging (MALDI-MSI) method was developed to obtain dynamic images of forchlorfenuron in oriental melons. The majority of forchlorfenuron was found in the exocarp and mesocarp regions of the melons and decreased within two days after application. The degradation rate obtained by MALDI-MSI was reliable and comparable to HPLC-MS/MS, indicating its practicability for pesticide degradation study.

Summary: Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization-imaging mass spectrometry (MALDI-IMS) is a valuable technique for identifying compounds and understanding their physiological information in plant tissues. Researchers have developed a sample preparation protocol to obtain thin sections of hard seeds, enabling molecular mapping by MALDI-IMS. This method has the potential to be a valuable tool for studying the morphology, anatomy, and physiology of botanical materials.

Summary: Traditionally, MALDI IMS requires the deposition of an organic matrix, which often generates high background noise in the low mass range. LDI offers selective ionization with low background in the low mass range. This article discusses the advantages and disadvantages of solvent free and wet deposition of metals as LDI matrices and demonstrates the power of metal-assisted LDI for analyzing low molecular weight molecules in tissue sections.

Summary: Surface-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (SALDI-MS) is a technique that uses nanostructured substrates to promote the desorption/ionization of analytes, allowing for both untargeted and targeted analysis. This review focuses on SALDI-MS imaging (SALDI-MSI), discussing the nomenclature, fundamental mechanisms, analytical strategies, and applications in various fields. SALDI-MSI has strengths and limitations, but shows promising prospects for future development.

Summary: This study presents a simple and efficient approach using matrix-free laser desorption ionization mass spectrometry (LDI-MS) to identify activity markers in complex mixtures of natural products (NPs). The method was successfully applied to predict and isolate NPs with notable anti-AGEs effects from crude bark extracts of Garcinia parvifolia. The results were comparable to those obtained by liquid chromatography coupled to high-resolution tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS2), and the C-13 NMR dereplication tool MixONat was used to confirm the structures of the activity markers.
