This study aimed to evaluate the nutrient digestibility of growing rabbits fed diets with different levels of either Leucaena leucocephala (LLM) or Moringa oleifera (MOLM) leaf meals and also to compare total collection and TiO2 marker methods for estimating digestibility. A total of 30 California growing rabbits (1.81 +/- 0.19 kg live weight on average) were randomly distributed into five experimental groups of six rabbits each and were housed in individual cages. The groups were control, 30% LLM, 40% LLM, 30% MOLM, and 40% MOLM. All groups received pelleted diets for two weeks; diets also contained 4 g/kg titanium dioxide as dietary marker. Daily feed intake was recorded during the whole experimental period and total feces were collected daily and weighed individually during four days. The results showed that there were no difference (p>0.05) in feed, dry matter (DM), organic matter (OM), crude protein (CP), digestible energy, and crude fiber (CF) intake between the control group and the other experimental groups. The apparent digestibility values of DM, OM, CP, CF, acid detergent fiber, and gross energy were the highest for control group (p = 0.001), meanwhile MOLM diets had generally higher nutrient digestibility coefficients than LLM diets. Increasing the inclusion level of leaf meal in the diet from 30% to 40% improved the digestibility of CF from 45.02% to 51.69% for LLM and from 48.11% to 55.89% for MOLM. Similar results for apparent nutrient digestibility coefficients were obtained when either total collection or indigestible marker method was used. In conclusion, the digestibility of MOLM containing diets were better than LLM diets, furthermore TiO2 as an external marker could be used as a simple, practical and reliable method to estimate nutrients digestibility in rabbit diets.

Summary: This study evaluated the in vitro anthelmintic activity against Haemonchus contortus of ten extracts obtained from coffee pulp waste, maize comb waste, pangola grass hay, and different mixtures of those materials. The results showed that certain extracts exhibited activity against eggs and larvae, and chemical analysis revealed the presence of coumarins and flavonoids in the extracts. The extracts from T4 and T8 showed the best overall activity and had good nutritional quality.

Summary: The study found that browsing experience of goats guided their selection and intake towards plants with better nutritional quality in cafeteria trials, with lower intake of secondary compounds. Goats with experience selected and consumed forages with suitable nutritional quality, while naive goats did not show a clear pattern for their selection or intake.

Voluntary consumption of Lantana camara L. when browsing the heterogeneous vegetation of tropical forests: A goats' perspective

Rafael Arturo Torres-Fajardo, Gabriel Andres Ortiz-Dominguez, Raul Ariel Avila-Cervantes, Carlos Alfredo Sandoval-Castro, Javier Ventura-Cordero, Juan Felipe de Jesus Torres-Acosta, Pedro Geraldo Gonzalez-Pech

Summary: This study describes the feeding behavior of Criollo goats towards Lantana camara in the low deciduous forest. The results show that almost all experimental goats freely consumed Lantana camara, including bites directed to leaves, stems, flowers, and fruits. Goats possess strategies that help them select a wide range of plant species, and the nutritional context plays an important role in their dietary decisions.

Male Layer Chicken's Response to Dietary Moringa oleifera Meal in a Tropical Climate

Esther Faustin Evaris, Luis Sarmiento Franco, Carlos Sandoval Castro, Jose Segura Correa, Jesus Caamal Maldonado

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of adding Moringa oleifera meal to the diets of slow-growing male chickens with outdoor access in the tropics. The results showed that the inclusion of Moringa in the diets did not negatively affect production performance and carcass traits, but it did increase feed conversion. Breast and gizzard weight and yield were significantly increased with dietary Moringa, while blood parameters remained unchanged. Therefore, Moringa can be added as a feed ingredient to improve productive and carcass traits of slow-growing male chickens with outdoor access in the tropics.

Summary: This study developed and evaluated an in vitro rumen incubation method to describe the exsheathment kinetics of Haemonchus contortus third-stage infective larvae in ruminal liquor. The aim was to standardize the method and select the best fitting nonlinear model to describe the exsheathment kinetics. The exsheathment in ruminal liquor reached 6.52%, 20.65%, 58.22%, 69.24%, 73.08%, and 77.20% in 1, 3, 6, 9, 12, and 24 hours, respectively. The Log-Logistic model had the best fit among the tested models.

Summary: This study evaluated the effect of different levels of dietary Tithonia diversifolia (TD: 0, 10, 20, and 30 %) on productive traits, egg quality, and economic efficiency in laying hens. The results showed that hens fed the 20 and 30 % TD diets had higher feed intake, but lower laying rate compared to those fed the 0 or 10 % TD diets. The inclusion of up to 10 % TD in laying hen diets did not affect productive traits, economic efficiency, and egg quality traits.

Summary: Previous studies have shown that legume fodders containing condensed tannins can be an option for controlling gastrointestinal nematodes in ruminants and addressing resistance to anthelmintics. Recent research has evaluated the antiparasitic activity of unconventional agro-industrial by-products. This review presents evidence for the antiparasitic effects of tannin-containing agro-industrial by-products and discusses their socio-economic aspects and on-farm use.
