Summary: This study analyzed the association between the definitions of acute kidney injury (AKI) and different stages of chronic kidney disease after intravenous administration of iodinated contrast medium. The results showed a significant increase in contrast-associated AKI from stage 3A onward in chronic kidney disease patients.

Summary: This multicenter, double-blind, randomized, controlled trial compared the efficacy of intravenous doxycycline, azithromycin, or a combination of both for the treatment of severe scrub typhus. The results showed that combination therapy was more effective in reducing the occurrence of the primary outcome compared to monotherapy.

Summary: This review suggests that the use of N-acetylcysteine before intravenous administration of iodinated contrast can reduce the incidence of contrast-induced nephropathy (CIN), while the use of sodium bicarbonate has no significant effect. However, these prophylactic interventions do not appear to have a significant impact on the need for kidney replacement therapy (KRT), mortality, or persistent renal impairment.

Summary: Contrast associated kidney injury is caused by inflammation as a side effect of iodinated contrast media (ICM). Chronic inflammation in dialysis patients contributes to atherosclerosis, leading to concurrent kidney, brain, and vascular conditions. This study investigated the effects of ICM on cardiovascular complications in dialysis patients and found that ICM exposure was significantly associated with an increased risk of major cardiovascular events.

Summary: Perchlorate, a water-soluble contaminant, can lead to hypothyroidism and metabolic syndromes. Zebrafish exposed to perchlorate did not show significant differences in liver variables or whole body lipid area compared to controls. Differences in responses between species suggest that obesogenic effects of perchlorate exposure may vary based on evolutionary adaptations and geographic locations.

Summary: This article presents detailed investigations of holographic recording in a new organic material, revealing the influence of material composition, processing, exposure conditions, and pre-exposure on the development and final characteristics of holographic gratings. Through time-resolved and spatially resolved analyses, the effects of pre-exposure on grating formation and refractive index contrast are determined. Unexpected effects are also observed.

Summary: The purpose of this study was to address the challenges posed by intravenous contrast in computed tomography (CT) muscle density analysis. The researchers developed and tested corrections for contrast-enhanced CT muscle density, and found that a correction factor of -7.5 HU rendered contrast-enhanced muscle density statistically similar to noncontrast density, providing a practical tool for clinicians.

Summary: The meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the impact of clinical characteristics on mortality risk in peritoneal dialysis patients. Factors such as age, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, alkaline phosphatase, and hemoglobin were found to be associated with mortality risk, while peritonitis, peritoneal transport status, BMI, and inflammatory markers increased the risk of all-cause mortality. Further research is needed to determine the serum levels of magnesium, potassium, and uric acid beneficial for PD patient survival.

Summary: The use of Automated Peritoneal Dialysis (APD) has been increasing in developed countries, attributed to improved design and lifestyle benefits, but the superiority between APD and Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis (CAPD) is still unresolved. APD is considered the most suitable PD modality for fast transporters, but it also has drawbacks like increased cost and faster decline in residual renal function.

Summary: This study assessed the benefits of convalescent plasma treatment compared to placebo or no treatment in COVID-19 patients and found that convalescent plasma treatment did not reduce all-cause mortality. The researchers recommend that convalescent plasma treatment for COVID-19 patients should not be used outside of randomized trials. Collaboration among trial investigators can inform both evidence generation and evidence application in patient care.

Summary: This study investigated the clinical risk assessment of healthcare professionals for Cardiac Surgery Associated Acute Kidney Injury (CSA-AKI) and the added value of biomarker results. The results showed that healthcare professionals performed poorly or fairly in predicting CSA-AKI, and knowledge of the Nephrocheck (R) result did not improve prediction accuracy. Limited events prevented conclusive findings on the prediction of severe AKI.

Summary: The surge in antimicrobial resistance and limited availability of new drugs has sparked interest in optimizing antibiotic dosing. For beta-lactam antibiotics, prolonged infusion has been widely adopted due to PK/PD considerations. However, merely increasing target attainment is unlikely to improve clinical outcomes. A different approach, focusing on the maximum tolerable dose (MTD), is necessary to maximize bacterial cell kill while minimizing the risk of resistance and toxicity.

Summary: This study investigates the relationship between hemodynamics and the development and reversal of acute kidney injury (CSA-AKI) after cardiac surgery. The results show that mean perfusion pressure and central venous pressure are associated with the development of CSA-AKI, while VISAUC/h is not. In patients who do not require kidney replacement therapy, a majority of them fully recover from AKI. The reversal of CSA-AKI is associated with mean perfusion pressure and mean arterial pressure, but not with VISAUC.

Summary: This study found a significant association between the renal resistive index (RI) measured immediately post-kidney transplantation and delayed graft function (DGF), particularly strong in patients receiving grafts from donors after brain death and expanded criteria donors.
