In recent years, new technologies have become available for imaging small animals. The use of animal models in basic and preclinical sciences, for example, offers the possibility of testing diagnostic markers and drugs, which is becoming crucial in the success and timeliness of research and is allowing a more efficient approach in defining study objectives and providing many advantages for both clinical research and the pharmaceutical industry. The use of these instruments offers data that are more predictive of the distribution and efficacy of a compound. The mouse, in particular, has become a key animal model system for studying human disease. It offers the possibility of manipulating its genome and producing accurate models for many human disorders, thus resulting in significant progress in understanding pathologenic mechanisms. In neurobiology, the possibility of simulating neurodegenerative diseases has enabled the development and validation of new treatment strategies based on gene therapy or cell grafting. Noninvasive imaging in small living animal models has gained increasing importance in preclinical research, itself becoming an independent specialty. The aim of this article is to review the characteristics of these systems and illustrate their main applications.

Evaluation of AI-Based Segmentation Tools for COVID-19 Lung Lesions on Conventional and Ultra-low Dose CT Scans

Marco Aiello, Dario Baldi, Giuseppina Esposito, Marika Valentino, Marco Randon, Marco Salvatore, Carlo Cavaliere

Summary: A reliable diagnosis and accurate monitoring are crucial for COVID-19 treatment and prevention. Chest CT is considered a crucial diagnostic imaging technique for assessing viral pneumonia injuries, and automated lung segmentation methods help speed up the diagnosis. Ultra-low dose chest CT protocols have been implemented to reduce radiation burden, but existing AI technologies have not been validated for use with these protocols. This study compares the results of four AI tools on datasets acquired with different protocols, finding high comparability between CD-CT and ULD-CT data.

Comparisons of glandular breast dose between digital mammography, tomosynthesis and breast CT based on anthropomorphic patient-derived breast phantoms

Antonio Sarno, Giovanni Mettivier, Kristina Bliznakova, Andrew M. Hernandez, John M. Boone, Paolo Russo

Summary: This study evaluated the bias introduced by homogeneous breast models in digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) in estimating the mean glandular dose (MGD). The study also examined the glandular dose distributions in 2D and 3D x-ray breast imaging using breast models with realistic glandular tissue distribution and organ silhouette. The results showed that conventional conversion coefficients based on homogeneous breast models overestimate MGD in DBT, and the standard deviation of the glandular dose distribution is lower in breast dedicated CT (BCT) compared to digital mammography (DM) and DBT.

MRI-Based Radiomic Features Help Identify Lesions and Predict Histopathological Grade of Hepatocellular Carcinoma

Valentina Brancato, Nunzia Garbino, Marco Salvatore, Carlo Cavaliere

Summary: The study aims to develop an MRI-based radiomics approach for the early detection and histological grade prediction of HCC. By extracting radiomic features from T2 images and DCE-MRI, predictive models were constructed and promising results were achieved. Radiomics MRI based on T2 and DCE-MRI may serve as a suitable tool for personalized treatment of HCC patients and the development of new prognostic biomarkers.

Patient-specific Monte Carlo-based organ dose estimates in spiral CT via optical 3D body scanning and adaptation of a voxelized phantom dataset: proof-of-principle

Francesca Saveria Maddaloni, Antonio Sarno, Giovanni Mettivier, Stefania Clemente, Caterina Oliviero, Roberta Ricciardi, Antonio Varallo, Paolo Russo

Summary: This study presents a method for personalized organ dose estimates before CT exams using 3D optical body scanning and Monte Carlo simulations. By adapting a reference phantom to the body size and shape measured with a portable 3D optical scanner, a voxelized phantom was derived. The internal body anatomy derived from a phantom dataset matched for gender, age, weight, and height was incorporated into the voxelized body phantom to provide more accurate organ dose estimates.
