Summary: This paper presents a novel and simple micro-analytical method using micro X-Ray Fluorescence (μ-XRF) spectrometry for determining the Pu percentage in fast reactor nuclear fuels with respect to uranium. The method requires minimal sample amount for analysis with low radioactivity, and provides highly accurate analytical results.

Summary: We present a novel technique for obtaining fission data for nuclei that are not in beta stability. These data are important for understanding the astrophysical r process, the origin of heavy elements, and developing predictive models for fission. They are also relevant for terrestrial applications in power generation and safeguarding. The solenoidal spectrometer technique, commonly used for studying nucleon-transfer reactions in inverse kinematics, has been successfully applied to deduce the fission-barrier height of 239U via the 238U(d, pf) reaction, confirming the validity of this technique.

Summary: Liquid-liquid extraction of actinide ions UO22+, Pu4+, and Am3+ using tripodal amide extractants HONTA and HDDNTA in nitric acid feed solutions showed that HONTA was more effective than HDDNTA in extracting the metal ions. Different chemical species were formed for each metal ion under various conditions, and efficient back extraction methods were identified for quantitatively stripping Pu(IV), U(VI), and Am(III). The ligand solutions exhibited good radiation stability and distribution data were obtained for possible nuclear fuel cycle applications under U(VI) loading conditions.

Summary: The experimental results show that the formation mechanisms of Ce-bearing aerosols during chemical explosions depend on various factors, including the morphological characteristics of Ce materials, composition of the pellets, and explosive dosage. The dominant phase in Ce-bearing aerosols formed by Ce powder is dendritic particles with monoclinic Ce6O11 (5CeO(2)center dot CeO), where the diffusion characteristics of oxygen defects on the surface of CeO2-x lead to the coexistence of Ce(iv) and Ce(iii) in the aerosol particles.

Summary: Researchers synthesized and characterized U-III/U-IV and U-III/U-III complexes, finding that the U-O bond can be easily broken upon addition of N-heterocycles, releasing U-III and U-II. Particularly, the U-III/U-III oxide complex exhibits unique reductive coupling and two-electron reduction reactivity.

Summary: Several incidences of nuclear smuggling have highlighted the need for a strong on-site nuclear forensic infrastructure. High-resolution gamma-ray spectrometry plays a crucial role, but existing methodologies have limitations for absolute assay of special nuclear materials in nonstandard samples. This study proposes a methodology using HRGRS that can accurately quantify fissile and other radioisotopes in sealed packages without knowledge of sample geometry and matrices. The methodology demonstrates potential for on-site nuclear forensic analysis with a short assay time, and it can be extended for wider applications beyond nuclear forensics.

Summary: In recent years, the importance of electronic structures in characterizing the chemical properties of actinide containing materials has been increasingly recognized by scientists. High-energy resolution X-ray spectroscopy at the actinide M-4, M-5 edges has emerged as a promising direction, providing key information for understanding actinide properties. Theoretical models describing the observed electronic structure phenomena have advanced alongside technical developments in X-ray methods and experimental discoveries.

Summary: This article discusses the challenges and approaches in dose reconstructions for internal emitters in selected facilities as part of the Million Person Study (MPS). The study found that the potential errors in reconstructed tissue doses vary at different sites, with major sources of error including identification of internal emitters, intake patterns, reliability of bioassay measurements, use of coworker information, and the relation between air monitoring data and actual intake. The article provides important recommendations for improving dose reconstruction efforts, such as the development of best feasible exposure scenarios and the careful use of coworker data.
