The paper examines the Upper Solutrean-Archaic Magdalenian/Badegoulian succession on the base of lithic and bone tool production, chrono-stratigraphic data and radiocarbon dates from the Cantabrian and Mediterranean regions of Iberia, mainly the areas of Asturias and Valencia (Spain). The discussion considers a reduced number of variables (characteristic stone tools, bone points and decoration techniques) and highlights the elements in common. The analysis concerning the transformation of lithic production at Cova del Parpallo provides new data for the Upper Solutrean-Archaic Magdalenian/Badegoulian transition. Characterization and sources of Paleolithic-Mesolithic ochre from Coves de Santa Maira (Valencian Region, Spain)

J. Emili Aura Tortosa, Gianni Gallello, Clodoaldo Roldan, Giovanni Cavallo, Agustin Pastor, Sonia Murcia-Mascaros

Summary: This study investigates the exploitation of local ochre sources at the Coves de Santa Maira site in the Spanish Mediterranean region during different archaeological phases. By conducting morphological, mineralogical, and chemical analyses, the study provides interesting data about iron-based mineral exploitation during Prehistory in the studied region.

RADIOCARBON DATES FOR THE LATE PLEISTOCENE AND EARLY HOLOCENE OCCUPATIONS OF COVA ROSA (RIBADESELLA, ASTURIAS, SPAIN)

Esteban Alvarez-Fernandez, Jesus F. Jorda Pardo, Pablo Arias, Julian Becares, Sergio Martin-Jarque, Rodrigo Portero, Luis Teira, Katerina Douka

Summary: Four excavations have been conducted at the archaeological site of Cova Rosa in Cantabrian Spain, revealing occupations during the Last Glacial period, Solutrean, Magdalenian, and early Holocene. Stratigraphic correlation and new radiocarbon dates have helped compare these occupations with other sites in Cantabrian Spain and Asturias specifically.

Summary: The Mediterranean coast of Spain has several clusters of Palaeolithic sites, which are accompanied by rock art ensembles. This study analyzes archaeological material and radiocarbon dates from Late Pleistocene deposits at Cueva Victoria, revealing that the occupants primarily acquired marine resources through shell-fishing, fishing, and using beached marine mammals.

San Quirce (Palencia, Spain): new chronologies for the Lower to Middle Palaeolithic transition of south-west Europe

Marcos Terradillos-Bernal, Martina Demuro, Lee J. Arnold, Jesus F. Jorda-Pardo, Ignacio Clemente-Conte, Alfonso Benito-Calvo, J. Carlos Diez Fernandez-Lomana

Summary: This paper presents new dating results for the sedimentary sequence at San Quirce, indicating an older age than previously thought. The main lithic assemblage from the site provides insights into the cultural habits and adaptation of the local Neanderthals during that time.

Study of the access routes to the Castilian plateau through the Sella River valley (Asturias, Spain) during the end of the Upper Palaeolithic

Manuel Amalio Valles Fernandez, Mario Menendez Fernandez, Jesus Francisco Jorda Pardo, David Cocero Matesanz

Summary: The Sella River valley in Spain is a significant area for Palaeolithic discoveries and research. The use of tools like Geographic Information Systems has made progress in studying prehistoric transit routes, but on-ground verification is still necessary.

Dots, circles and horses: New rock art evidence through image-based digital methods in Moro Cave (Tarifa, Spain)

Camilo Barcia-Garcia, Marti Mas-Cornella, Alfredo M. Maximiano Castillejo, Jesus F. Jorda Pardo

Summary: Moro Cave rock-shelter is an important site for understanding rock art in the southernmost part of Iberia. However, previous interventions have left many questions unanswered and reduced its scientific relevance. This paper highlights how digital image-based spatial methods are improving the study of rock art in the Campo de Gibraltar and La Janda ancient lagoon area in Spain. The introduction of image recording methods has provided promising insights for future research, including spatial modeling, microtopography analysis, and the discovery of unpublished motifs.

New record of cold-adapted fauna on the Castilian Plateau: Woolly rhinoceros - Coelodonta antiquitatis (Blumenbach, 1799) - at La Mina (Burgos, Spain)

Diego Arceredillo, Carlos Diez Fernandez-lomana, Jesus Francisco Jorda Pardo

Summary: La Mina is one of the three sites located in the middle course of the Arlanza river. Excavated in 2006, it revealed evidence of two Palaeolithic occupations and recovered remains of woolly rhinoceros. Amino acid racemisation dating provided the earliest Upper Pleistocene date for Coelodonta antiquitatis on the Iberian Peninsula. The findings have implications for understanding migratory patterns of the species and completing the picture of its movements through the Middle and Upper Palaeolithic on the Iberian Peninsula.

Margarita Vadillo Conesa, Giulia Ricci, Mariel Bencomo Viala, J. Emili Aura Tortosa, Fabio Martini

Summary: This paper analyzes the variability detected within a group of splintered pieces, using technological and traceological readings. By comparing two geographically distant and chronologically disparate assemblages in Italy and Spain, the study establishes distinctions within this broad category and finds correlations between the presence of these pieces and different points in the chaine operatoire. The findings aim to serve as a reference for researchers studying lithic assemblages containing such pieces.
