To explore the relationship between excess weight and health related quality of life (HRQL) in the general population by means of the EuroQol-5D questionnaire. The relationship between excess weight and HRQL was explored by the 2004 Canary Islands Health Survey. Survey participants from 16 years of age and older were classified according to their body mass index (BMI). The relationship between excess weight and the dichotomized EuroQol-5D was examined by multiple logistic regression analysis, adjusting by socio-demographic variables, smoking status, alcohol consumption, and self-reported disease status. People with excess weight were older, less educated, and had more associated diseases than the population without excess weight. Excess weight and HRQL are inversely correlated. Severely obese participants showed EuroQol-5D index scores significantly lower than those of normal weight participants (0.65 vs. 0.87). The adjusted odds ratio for the lower HRQL is 3.17 for severely obese people compared to normal weight people. Excess weight has a negative impact on HRQL, even for people without chronic diseases. A better understanding of the relationships between excess weight, its associated comorbidities, and HRQL may have important implications for the design and assessment of prevention and treatment strategies.

Summary: The study evaluated the effectiveness of different interventions for improving outcomes measures in long-term T2DM patients. Results showed that interventions focusing on knowledge transfer and behavior modification were effective in improving knowledge, self-empowerment, distress, diet adherence, and tobacco cessation, with the patient intervention group showing the most lasting benefits.

Summary: The aim of this study was to identify factors associated with patient empowerment in people living with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in the Canary Islands (Spain). The analysis included the baseline data of 2334 patients. Results showed that age, diabetes knowledge, and state-anxiety are significantly associated with patient empowerment. Sex, education level, living alone, employment status, country of birth, time since diagnosis, number of comorbidities, glycated haemoglobin level, depression, and distress were not independently associated with patient empowerment in the multivariate analyses.

Summary: The study aims to preliminarily evaluate the degree of food addiction in a non-clinical pilot pediatric population using the Spanish Yale Food Addiction Scale for Children (S-YFAS-C). The findings show that 20% of the sample exhibits three or more symptoms of food addiction, indicating a risk of developing a food disorder and distorted body image. The S-YFAS-C scale proves to be effective in evaluating food addiction in Spanish-speaking boys and girls, with similar results to the original scale.

Summary: This study investigates the post-COVID period in terms of clinical, psycho-social, and radiological aspects, focusing on lung ultrasound (LUS) findings. The findings reveal that almost 90% of the patients experience persistent symptoms after 16 weeks of hospital discharge, with dyspnea being the most common manifestation. LUS results show altered lung aeration pattern in over 70% of the patients on follow-up.
