Summary: This study reports on the frequency of ventricular arrhythmias in patients with sickle cell anemia (SCA). The authors found that 22% of the patients experienced ventricular arrhythmias, with 64% showing a moderate burden of premature ventricular complexes and 41% presenting with nonsustained ventricular tachycardia (VT).

Summary: High and increasing mortality rates among reproductive-aged women in the U.S. have significant implications for maternal, women's, and children's health. Patterns differ by age, race/ethnicity, and geography, indicating a need to address structural factors to improve health outcomes for this population.

Summary: IL-18 plays a crucial role in the development of sickle cell disease-related cardiomyopathy, and the main treatment approach is to reduce cardiac fibrosis and VT occurrence by inhibiting IL-18. The level of IL-18 in the blood is related to cardiac function, suggesting IL-18 as a potential therapeutic target for patients with SCD.

Summary: We present the first population-based period life table for patients with sickle cell disease (SCD) in the United States, showing disparities in survival by insurance types. A retrospective cohort of SCD patients receiving common care was constructed based on Medicare and Medicaid claim data. The study highlights the persistent life expectancy shortfall and survival disparities among SCD patients based on insurance status.

Summary: This study investigated the geographic variations and changes in all-cause mortality rates in China from 2005 to 2015, as well as the social factors influencing these rates. The results indicated that factors such as education level, sanitation facilities, and healthcare professionals were associated with mortality rates, revealing existing health disparities between regions.

Summary: This study analyzed mortality rate trends for oral cavity and oropharyngeal cancer (OCOPC) in Spain from 1979 to 2018. The results showed a decline in mortality rates for oral cavity cancer (OCC), while rates for OCOPC increased slightly and rates for oropharyngeal cancer (OPC) increased significantly. The highest mortality rates for OCC and OPC were observed between 1979 and 1992. Age, period, and cohort analyses revealed an increase in mortality rates for certain age groups.

Summary: A study found that in 2020, there was a 244% increase in deaths among individuals with sickle cell disease (SCD) in the USA. These deaths were more likely to involve acute organ failure compared to previous years, and COVID infection could not explain all of the excess mortality. The study suggests that individuals with SCD may be particularly vulnerable to delays in medical care.

Summary: This study analyzed colorectal cancer (CRC) incidence rates in Canada from 1992 to 2016 and found variations by age group and income quintile. The results indicate a noticeable increase in CRC incidence rates among younger individuals, particularly in the lower income quintiles. Targeted interventions and further research are needed to address this issue.

Summary: This study focuses on the changes in Covid death rates in 2020, finding that the death rate has decreased by at least 80% in most parts of the US and at least 90% in most parts of Europe. The decrease in death rates does not appear to have strong correlations with other factors such as contact rate or population density. The majority of the decrease occurred between mid-April and mid-June 2020, which coincided with the relaxation of lockdown measures and the surge in new cases. Possible causes for this decrease include improvements in treatment, increased use of face masks, new virus strains, and changes in data collection and reporting.

Summary: The burial rates of males and females in early modern central London were compared to investigate a possible bias towards male mortality in plague years. The study found a higher burial rate for males in each plague year, partly due to a higher population of males in central London. Additionally, the migration of women of childbearing age out of the city during the plague years contributed to the enhanced difference in adult male and female burials. Husbands were also more likely to be buried than their wives. However, this bias was less apparent in some plague years and in non-plague years, there were more burials of boys than girls.

Summary: This study developed a two-page pamphlet about reproductive options for people with SCD in collaboration with stakeholders from the SCD community. The pamphlet was found to be acceptable and clear, meeting health literacy standards. Patients felt hopeful after reviewing the pamphlet, suggesting that educational materials about complex topics such as IVF + PGT can be written at a level understandable to the average American.
