Summary: This study found that factors such as iron deficiency, renal impairment, and chronic inflammation are associated with the presence and onset of anemia in very old adults. Individuals with a combination of these determinants have a higher risk of developing anemia.

Summary: The study investigated the etiological factors contributing to anemia in pregnant women in Sri Lanka and found that besides iron deficiency remaining the primary cause, minor hemoglobinopathies, B12 deficiency, and other etiologies substantially contribute to anemia in this population. Public health interventions, including screening for minor hemoglobinopathies and multiple micronutrient supplementation in pregnancy, should be considered in the national program for areas where these problems have been identified.

Summary: Anaemia continues to be a persistent concern among South African women of reproductive age, and there is a lack of population-specific information on its determinants. This study used baseline data from a randomized trial to identify factors associated with anaemia in young women in Soweto, South Africa. The results showed that iron deficiency, iron deficiency erythropoiesis, and elevated CRP increased the odds of being anaemic. The study also suggested that anaemia control programs should focus on reducing iron deficiency and inflammation in this low resource setting.

Summary: Vitamin B-12, folate, iron deficiency, chronic kidney disease, and anemia of inflammation are common causes of anemia in the elderly. WHO criteria for nutritional deficiencies do not account for aging-related changes, highlighting the need for age-specific standards. A study on Polish seniors revealed a significant number of unexplained anemia cases, emphasizing the importance of tailored diagnostic criteria for nutrient deficiency in older populations.

Summary: This study examines the deficiency of vitamin B-12 in pregnant rural Bangladeshi women and found that the proportions of vitamin B-12 deficiency and marginal deficiency increased as their pregnancies progressed. Gestational age, housing situation, and the frequency of consuming red or organ meat were identified as independent risk factors for vitamin B-12 deficiency in this population.

Summary: There is a high prevalence of vitamin B-12 and folate deficiency among Indian children and adolescents, especially in adolescents. Although there are regional variations, there are no rural-urban differences. These findings suggest the need for further investigation.

Summary: Women living with HIV have a higher prevalence of anemia during the third trimester of pregnancy, with anemia being associated with a higher risk of preterm births. These findings emphasize the importance of addressing underlying factors and clinical outcomes of anemia in this population.

Summary: In Ghana, iron deficiency, malaria parasitaemia, inflammation, vitamin A deficiency, and stunting were significantly associated with anaemia in children; while iron deficiency, vitamin A deficiency, and inflammation were significantly associated with anaemia in women, with overweight and obese women having lower prevalence of anaemia. Anaemia control programmes should focus on preventing iron deficiency, malaria, and inflammation as main predictors of anaemia in Ghanaian children and women, with region-specific strategies.

Summary: This study found that among pregnant women with iron-deficiency anaemia in South Africa, HIV-positive patients had slower hemoglobin recovery in response to oral iron therapy compared to HIV-negative patients, but eventually successful recovery. Effective management of iron deficiency could reduce the incidence of peripartum blood transfusion.

Summary: Low-grade inflammation often present in individuals with obesity can affect iron uptake and metabolism, increasing the risk of iron deficiency and iron-deficiency anemia. Pregnant women are particularly vulnerable to these risks. Therefore, closer monitoring of iron status and weight gain is recommended for pregnant women living with obesity.

Summary: This study conducted a multicentric study across ten cities in India to explore the relationship between micronutrient deficiency and cognitive functioning in urban school-going children and adolescents. The results showed that more than 2/3 of the participants had multiple micronutrient deficiencies, which were associated with impaired cognitive function. Therefore, addressing micronutrient deficiencies should be a priority in school-going children in India.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between dietary folate, vitamin B6, and vitamin B12 intake and hypertension in US adults. The results showed a negative association between dietary intake of these nutrients and the prevalence of hypertension in both male and female participants. Moreover, there was a linear trend indicating that higher intake of folate, vitamin B6, and vitamin B12 was associated with a lower prevalence of hypertension.
