Objective: To evaluate adolescents' abilities to identify foods and estimate the portion size of foods consumed in order to inform development of the mobile telephone food record (mpFR). Design: Data were collected from two samples of adolescents (11-18 years). Adolescents in sample 1 participated in one lunch (n 63) and fifty-five of the sixty-three adolescents (87%) returned for breakfast the next morning. Sample 2 volunteers received all meals and snacks for a 24 h period. At mealtime, sample 1 participants were asked to write down the names of the foods. Sample 2 participants identified foods in an image of their meal 10-14 h postprandial. Adolescents in sample 2 also estimated portion sizes of their breakfast foods and snacks. Results: Sample 1 identified thirty of the thirty-eight food items correctly, and of the misidentified foods all were identified within the correct major food group. For sample 2, eleven of the thirteen food items were identified correctly 100% of the time. Half of the breakfast and snack foods had at least one portion size estimate within 10% of the true amount using a variety of measurement descriptors. Conclusions: The results provide evidence that adolescents can correctly identify familiar foods and they can look at an image of their meal and identify the foods in the image up to 14.5 h postprandial. The results of the present study not only inform the development of the mpFR but also provide strong evidence of the use of digital images of eating occasions in research and clinical settings.

Demographic and psychosocial correlates of measurement error and reactivity bias in a 4-d image-based mobile food record among adults with overweight and obesity

Summary: Improving dietary reporting among people living with obesity is challenging due to various factors that affect reporting accuracy. This study found that higher BMI and a greater need for social approval were associated with lower likelihood of reporting accurate dietary intake. In addition, reactive reporting during the measurement process should be taken into consideration.

Summary: This study examined the differences in frequency of eating and temporal patterns associated with time of eating between participants using a mobile food record (mFR) and those using a paper-based dietary record (DR). The results showed that participants using the mFR were less likely to report eating occasions occurring on quarter hours compared to those using the DR.

Summary: The study found that diet quality in young adults is influenced by perceived competence, habit automaticity, and self-determined motivation. Higher levels of these factors are associated with healthier eating habits, highlighting the importance of interventions that promote healthy eating habits.

Summary: Floods are a common and devastating natural disaster that cause significant economic losses and human casualties worldwide. This study proposes a laborless and financially feasible framework that utilizes deep learning and Google Street View images to collect building attribute data and estimate various attributes, such as foundation height, type, building type, and number of stories. The framework achieves accurate results and can predict attributes for a large number of buildings in a short amount of time.

Image-based assessment of plant disease progression identifies new genetic loci for resistance to Ralstonia solanacearum in tomato

Summary: A major challenge in global crop production is mitigating yield loss due to plant diseases. One of the best strategies to control these losses is through breeding for disease resistance. Image-based, non-destructive measurements of plant morphology after pathogen infection can capture subtle quantitative differences between genotypes and enable the identification of new disease resistance loci. This study on tomato plants infected with a soilborne pathogen found that image-based phenotyping allows earlier detection of disease and identifies new genetic components of resistance compared to human assessment.

Integration of USDA Food Classification System and Food Composition Database for Image-Based Dietary Assessment among Individuals Using Insulin

Luotao Lin, Jiangpeng He, Fengqing Zhu, Edward J. Delp, Heather A. Eicher-Miller

Summary: To accurately identify food images, a food image database based on commonly consumed US foods and those contributing the most to energy was developed using a systematic classification structure aligned with the USDA food classification system. Images were mined from the web, annotated, and organized according to food category and subcategory, and then assigned a corresponding USDA food code in order to link the images to nutrient composition in the USDA's database. This database can be used for food identification and dietary assessment.
