Objective: To investigate the prevalence and characteristics of metabolic syndrome (MetS) in a healthy elderly Croatian population. Design: Cross-sectional study consisting of a health check including anthropometric measures and food questionnaires as well as analysis of biochemical parameters related to MetS. The diagnostic criteria of the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) were used for diagnosis of MetS. Setting: Four centres in continental (Virovitica and Zagreb) and Adriatic coast (Split and Omis.) regions of Croatia. Subjects: Free-living elderly persons aged 70-90 years (n 320). Results: Significantly lower MetS prevalence was found among participants from small urban centres compared with those from large urban centres (59.1% v. 69.6%; P = 0.051). Participants without MetS consumed wine more frequently (P = 0.05) than those with MetS. Compared with their peers with HDL cholesterol (HDL-C) <1.03 mmol/l, more male participants with HDL-C >= 1.03 mmol/l consumed wine (P = 0.04) or pelagic fish (P = 0.03). The prevalence of participants with TAG >= 1.7 mmol/l was higher in wine non-consumers (P = 0.05) than in wine consumers. Multivariate analysis with age and gender as covariates showed a significant inverse association of wine consumption with total cholesterol (P < 0.001), a positive association with HDL-C (P < 0.001) and a marginally inverse association with TAG (P = 0.06). In the male population, alkaline phosphatase and g-glutamyl transferase activities were higher in participants with MetS (P < 0.05). Conclusions: High MetS prevalence was observed in an elderly Croatian population. Data showed that moderate consumption of wine and/or pelagic fish has a protective role against MetS in the population studied.

Summary: The study found that individuals with AD and carriers of the APOE ε4 allele had elevated levels of calcium, copper, and magnesium in plasma and CSF, while boron levels decreased. Therefore, further research on the association between essential metals and APOE should be continued both in vivo and in vitro.

Effects of Sub-Chronic Exposure to Imidacloprid on Reproductive Organs of Adult Male Rats: Antioxidant State, DNA Damage, and Levels of Essential Elements

Blanka Tariba Lovakovic, Vilena Kasuba, Ankica Sekovanic, Tatjana Orct, Antonija Jancec, Alica Pizent

Summary: The study showed that exposure to low doses of imidacloprid can lead to adverse effects on the reproductive system of male rats, affecting testicular weight, antioxidant state, DNA damage, and essential element concentrations. This suggests a need for further evaluation of the widely used insecticide for its potential biological effects.

Spatio-temporal monitoring of mercury and other stable metal(loid)s and radionuclides in a Croatian terrestrial ecosystem around a natural gas treatment plant

Summary: The natural gas industry may pose a contamination risk to human and biota due to the presence of mercury, arsenic, and naturally occurring radioactive materials in gas. A comprehensive monitoring of soil, animals, and plants in the natural gas treatment plant in Molve, Croatia, revealed temporal variations in the levels of mercury and stable metal(loid)s, but without a clear trend. Spatial differences in soil and earthworms were found, exceeding the maximum allowable concentrations of arsenic and zinc in agricultural soil. There was a deficiency of essential copper, selenium, and zinc in cows, hares, and pheasants. The consumption of local cow and game products was considered safe, except for game offal due to the low risk of lead and cadmium's adverse effects. Radiological risk around the gas treatment plant was estimated as negligible.

The Impact of Long-Term Clinoptilolite Administration on the Concentration Profile of Metals in Rodent Organisms

Summary: Human activities have increased levels of poisonous chemicals, including heavy metals, in the environment. Clinoptilolite, a volcanic stone, can capture heavy metals and be used as a food supplement for detox purposes. Clinical studies have shown its detoxifying, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory effects. In an experiment with rats, activated clinoptilolite was found to release metallic toxicants from organs to the bloodstream, indicating a detoxification process.

The effects of maternal cigarette smoking on cadmium and lead levels, miRNA expression and biochemical parameters across the feto-placental unit

Ankica Sekovanic, Adrijana Dorotic, Daria Pasalic, Tatjana Orct, Zorana Kljakovic-Gaspic, Antonija Sulimanec Grgec, Sandra Stasenko, Tatjana Mioc, Martina Piasek, Jasna Jurasovic

Summary: This study investigated the associations of maternal cigarette smoking with cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) levels, candidate miRNA expression, and biochemical parameters across the feto-placental unit. The results showed that smokers had higher levels of Cd in all analyzed compartments and Pb in maternal blood and placenta compared to non-smokers. Smokers also had altered expression of miRNAs and lower urate concentrations in plasma. The study highlights the importance of analyzing all compartments of the feto-placental unit to fully understand the effects of maternal smoking.

Is low-level metal exposure related to testicular cancer?

Blanka Tariba Lovakovic, Tanja Zivkovic Semren, Toni Safner, Marija Gamulin, Majana Soce, Alica Pizent

Summary: Homeostasis disruption of element levels in men may increase susceptibility to cancer development, and environmental exposure to certain elements could contribute to the pathogenesis of testicular cancer. Differences in element levels and oxidative stress parameters were observed between men with testicular germ cell tumors (TGCT) and healthy men, with some elements like Ca, Cu, and Fe being strong predictors of illness. Additionally, patients with TGCT showed changes in serum and blood element levels with cancer progression, indicating a possible association between low-level environmental exposure to elements and cancer development. Monitoring elements concentrations during cancer treatment is important as platinum-based chemotherapeutics may further disrupt element homeostasis.
