Summary: This study explores the effect of temporary mindfulness meditation on musical aesthetic emotion processing (MAEP) while listening to Chinese classical folk instrumental music. Results show that the training decreased negative emotional experiences and promoted beautiful musical experiences, particularly among non-musically trained individuals. Maintaining mindfulness enhanced body awareness and led to a faster perception of musical time.

Summary: Playing and listening to music can promote emotion regulation and cognitive control, which can help reduce symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Future research should explore the protective effects of musical experience before trauma and develop pre-trauma training to prevent PTSD in at-risk populations.

Summary: This study investigates the neural correlates of intentional emotion transfer by the music performer through EEG connectivity patterns. The findings suggest that EEG-based connectivity in beta and gamma frequency ranges can effectively reflect the state of the networks involved in the emotional transfer, while the utility of low frequency bands (delta, theta, alpha) remains questionable.

Summary: The effects of background music on learning and memory are inconsistent due to the complexity and diversity of music, as well as individual differences in music perception and preference. This study revealed that dissonant chords were associated with better memory performance for word-image associations. Tension mediated the relationship between complexity and memory, while valence had a negative mediating effect.

Summary: Music training is believed to enhance various nonmusical abilities, and this belief is primarily based on comparisons between musicians and nonmusicians. However, it is unclear whether training itself is necessary to explain the advantages of musicians or if other factors such as innate predispositions and informal musical experience can produce similar effects. This study found that music training was positively associated with emotion recognition, but the effect was small. Furthermore, individuals with good musical abilities but without formal training performed just as well as highly trained musicians in recognizing vocal emotions.

Summary: This study suggests that neuroticism may lead young people to use maladaptive musical emotion regulation strategies and increase their internalizing symptoms. However, music training may act as a protective factor in this process. Regardless of musicianship, there are more similarities than differences in musical emotion regulation strategies.

Summary: This paper proposes an EEG music model based on a musical staff to solve the problems of poor emotion recognition caused by common EEG features. The model transforms EEG into music to recognize emotional states. Experimental results show that the model achieves higher emotional state recognition rate while retaining EEG characteristics.

Summary: One challenge in music and emotion research is to understand the role of listener attributes in musical emotion induction. This study examined the relative influence of musical expertise, musical aptitude, personality traits, and mood on musical emotion induction. Findings suggest that expertise had the highest influence, while the effects of mood and personality traits depended on the type of outcome and other listener factors.

Summary: This paper introduces Inkphony, a system that leverages musical rhythm to generate calligraphy typography and its composition based on the conveyed emotion. Through empirical evaluations, the efficacy of our approach in accurately expressing varying levels of emotion is demonstrated, while also establishing a perceptible connection between typography and music.

Summary: Music is a temporal experience that can elicit fluctuating moment-to-moment intensities of affect. However, the relationship between moment-to-moment affect during a musical experience and subsequent retrospective evaluations of the experience is unclear. This study investigated the effects of specific moments, experience segmentation, and experience trend on retrospective evaluations. The results showed that specific moments did not significantly contribute to retrospective evaluations of individual pieces. Retrospective evaluations of the musical recital relied more on the average ratings of individual pieces rather than momentary affect, suggesting that segmented and cohesive experiences are evaluated differently.

Summary: When it comes to representing affective response, there is much discussion in musical affect research. This study compares the ability of dimensional and discrete models of affect to capture self-reported affect in response to affectively ambiguous sounds. Two online experiments were conducted where participants rated perceived and induced affect in response to single notes and chromatic scales. The study concludes that the dimensions of valence and energy arousal best capture the perceived and induced affective response to affectively ambiguous sounds.
