Accumulating evidences suggest that Toll-like receptors (TLRs) were involved in the pathophysiology of major depressive disorder. TLR4 was thought to be associated with major depressive disorder in animal model, but the others were still unknown. In order to examine TLR1-9 mRNA expression levels in peripheral blood and their relationships with the psychopathology of major depressive disorder, 30 patients with major depressive disorder were compared with 29 healthy controls. The 17-item Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAMD-17) was used to assess the severity of major depression. The mRNA expression levels of TLRs were examined in parallel with a housekeeping gene using real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Analysis of covariance with age and body mass index adjustment revealed a significantly higher expression of TLR3, 4, 5 and 7 mRNA but lower expression of TLR1 and 6 in patients with major depressive disorder as compared with healthy controls. Multiple linear regression analysis revealed that TLR4 was an independent risk factor relating to severity of major depression. These findings suggest that TLRs, especially TLR4, may be involved in the psychopathology of major depression. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. All rights reserved.

TNIP2 mediates GRβ-promoted inflammation and is associated with severity of major depressive disorder

Ting- Chiang, Yi-Yung Hung, Ming-Kung Wu, Ya-Ling Huang, Hong-Yo Kang

Summary: This study identified the abnormal expression of the GRβ/TNIP2/TNF-α axis in patients with MDD, which may lead to inflammation in depression. Inhibiting TNIP2 could potentially reduce the promoting effect of GRβ on TNF-α levels.

Summary: Sex differences play a significant role in cardiovascular and cognitive function, impacting various aspects including pathophysiology, disease onset, symptoms, and severity. Atrial fibrillation (AF) may contribute to vascular cognitive impairment (VCI), with sex hormones potentially serving as therapeutic targets for early intervention.

Summary: The present study aimed to determine the association of ER mRNA expression levels with clinicopathologic features in PTC. The expression of ER alpha 66, ER alpha 36, ER beta, and GPER1 was lower in PTC specimens than in adjacent normal thyroid tissues. Low GPER1 expression was associated with extrathyroidal extension. There was no obvious difference in expression of ERs between PTC specimens from male and female patients.

Targeted activation of androgen receptor signaling in the periosteum improves bone fracture repair

Summary: The study found that androgen receptor (AR) is highly expressed in periosteum cells during bone fracture repair and is co-localized with a mesenchymal progenitor cell marker, Prrx1. Mice lacking AR in periosteum showed reduced callus size and new bone volume. Targeting the androgen/AR axis in periosteum may provide a novel therapy approach to improve fracture healing.

Highly Expressed Progesterone Receptor B Isoform Increases Platinum Sensitivity and Survival of Ovarian High-Grade Serous Carcinoma

Summary: The study found that strong progesterone receptor-B expression was associated with better platinum sensitivity and survival in patients with high-grade serous ovarian cancer. Clinical data indicated that high expression of progesterone receptor-B and optimal debulking were independent factors predicting better platinum sensitivity. In cell models, enhancing progesterone receptor-B expression and progesterone treatment increased platinum sensitivity and apoptosis of ovarian cancer cells, suggesting potential therapeutic targets for high-grade serous ovarian carcinoma.

Summary: This study found that in patients with major depressive disorder, the expression levels of miR-146a in exosomes were higher, and patients who achieved remission showed lower levels of various microRNAs before treatment and increased levels after treatment. Let-7e, miR-145, and miR-146a showed acceptable discrimination between the remission and non-remission groups.

Clinical Impact of Androgen Receptor-Suppressing miR-146b Expression in Papillary Thyroid Cancer Aggressiveness

Summary: The study revealed that dysregulated expression of miR-146b and androgen receptor (AR) played critical roles in the tumorigenesis of papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC). It was confirmed that miR-146b expression was significantly inversely correlated with AR expression. Further experiments showed that AR might bind to the androgen receptor element on the promoter region of miR-146b, leading to repression of miR-146b expression and reduction of PTC tumor aggressiveness. PTC patients with low AR/high miR-146b expression were associated with advanced tumor characteristics.
