Summary: Mood disorders, such as major depressive disorder (MDD) and bipolar disorder (BD), are prevalent psychiatric disorders that can lead to significant disability and increased risk of suicide. Biomarker studies, especially in circulatory miRNAs, have shown potential for better diagnosis and personalized treatment of these disorders. Understanding the role of miRNAs in managing neuropsychiatric conditions has advanced our knowledge of prognosis, diagnosis, and treatment response. This review highlights the potential of circulatory miRNAs as screening tools for assessing MDD, BD, and suicidal behavior.

Summary: Recent studies have shown a significant association between activated immune-inflammatory and nitro-oxidative pathways and suicide attempts. Inflammation, immune activation, nitro-oxidative stress, lowered neuroprotection, and increased neurotoxicity may explain why psychiatric patients exhibit increased suicidal behaviors.

Summary: The study found that the PHQ9 is a reliable predictor of suicide risk for patients with bipolar disorder, especially for those who report almost daily suicidal ideation. A history of self-harm is also an important indicator for predicting suicide attempts.

Summary: This study found that impulsivity is present in patients with bipolar disorder (BD) and may increase the risk of suicide attempts. The relationship between impulsivity and brain structural abnormalities in BD patients is still unclear. The results of this study indicate that the prefrontal cortex, especially the left inferior frontal gyrus, plays a vital role in trait impulsivity and suicidal behavior among patients with BD.

Summary: Suicidal ideation is a major suicide risk factor and it is important to identify individuals with such thoughts. Discrepancies between clinicians and patients' estimation of suicidal ideation can lead to under-evaluation of suicide risk. This study aimed to identify features associated with rating discrepancies in bipolar disorder patients.

Summary: Suicidal behavior is a serious health issue that affects adolescents. This study analyzed two different samples of middle-school students and found similarities in the latent class models. The study also confirmed the associations between the classes and psychosocial variables. The findings highlight the importance of effective prevention strategies to minimize risk factors and reinforce protective factors in the adolescent population.

Summary: This study examined the relationship between psychotic symptoms during bipolar depressive episodes and suicidal ideation among outpatients with bipolar disorder. The results indicated that patients with psychotic symptoms were more likely to report active suicidal thoughts, including specific plans and methods.

Summary: Ketamine is effective in reducing suicidal thoughts in the short term for suicidal patients. Clinical factors poorly predict remission, and fluctuations in suicidal ideas necessitate vigilance and multimodal care. Remission after the first infusion is highly predictive of future remission.

Summary: This study identified distinct cognitive-affective symptom profiles among individuals with IED and found that these profiles are meaningfully related to risk for adverse outcomes. These findings provide evidence of heterogeneity within IED and may suggest more personalized therapeutic approaches for patients with IED.

Summary: This study used latent profile analysis (LPA) and assessments of activity, sleep, and circadian characteristics to classify bipolar disorder type I (BDI) subjects into high and low chronobiological disturbance sub-groups. Circadian variables were found to be the distinguishing factors between the sub-groups. Future research should further explore the role of circadian characteristics in defining sub-phenotypes of bipolar disorder.

Summary: This cross-sectional study aimed to identify subgroups of adolescents based on NSSI and explore the factors related to these subgroups. Two distinct subgroups were found: a high suicidal ideation NSSI group and a low suicidal ideation NSSI group. Factors such as depression, female gender, left-behind experience, single-parent family, and peer victimization increased the probability of belonging to the high suicidal ideation NSSI group, while a high level of perceived social support was a protective factor.

Summary: This study used latent class analysis to examine whether subtypes of patients with bipolar disorder differ in their levels of suicidal ideation and behaviors. Results showed that patients in the severely depressed and mixed depression-mania subtypes reported significantly higher levels of suicidal ideation and behaviors compared to other subtypes.

Summary: Recent research shows that disparities in children's language-related brain function linked to poverty may contribute to achievement gaps between low-income students and their more advantaged peers. A comparison group study evaluated the implementation of a music-based mentoring program within high poverty elementary schools and found that it was associated with significant academic improvement, particularly for students with low prior achievement levels.
