Obesity and smoking in patients with schizophrenia and normal controls: A case-control study

Cardiovascular risk factors, especially obesity and smoking are highly prevalent in patients with schizophrenia. Central obesity and the metabolic syndrome are conditions mostly attributed to the use of antipsychotic medication and lifestyle habits, and they constitute a significant health concern. Our study sample included 105 patients suffering from schizophrenia aged 36.25 +/- 10.03 and 156 normal control subjects aged 36.03 +/- 11.33. All patients were in- or out-patients of a private hospital. Clinical diagnosis was made according to DSM-IV-TR criteria. Height, weight, waist circumference and number of cigarettes smoked daily were recorded. Duration of illness was calculated based on records concerning the age of first onset of psychotic symptoms. Body Surface Area (BSA) and Body Mass Index (BMI) were calculated as well as % body fat, with the use of LifeWise (TM) Body Fat Analyzers No 63-1525. The results of analysis of variance suggested a significant main effect regarding diagnosis and sex as well as for their interaction. There were significant differences between patients and controls regarding body weight, waist circumference, BMI, BSA and % body fat, with patients, espectially females, being more obese than controls. The results of the present study corroborate the increased prevalence of obesity in schizophrenia. The interpretation of this finding remains unclear. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. Summary: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a common complication of schizophrenia that is exacerbated by long-term use of antipsychotics. The study found that levels of leptin were significantly increased in MetS patients, while ghrelin levels were significantly decreased. There were fewer significant correlations between ghrelin and other hormones in MetS patients compared to those without MetS.

Summary: In a study comparing obese adolescents to lean controls, it was found that obese participants exhibited higher levels of hepcidin, ferritin, and IL-6. Differences in iron metabolism markers were not significant between the two groups except for ferritin. Hepcidin levels in obese adolescents were more correlated with inflammation and metabolic alterations than with iron metabolism.

This study found that patients with recent suicide attempts had lower parasympathetic activity and higher sympathetic activity compared to controls, indicating that HRV parameters could be reliable discriminative biomarkers for identifying individuals at risk of suicide.

Effects of Home-Based Exercise Training on Cardiac Autonomic Neuropathy and Metabolic Profile in Diabetic Hemodialysis Patients

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the effects of a home-based exercise training program on Cardiac Autonomic Neuropathy (CAN) and metabolic profile in Diabetic Kidney Disease (DKD) patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis (HD). The results showed that after a 6-month home-based exercise training program, the EX group had significant improvements in HDL, VO(2)peak, SDNN, pNN50, TS index, HbA1c, and LF. Linear regression analysis showed that VO(2)peak was positively correlated with SDNN and HF. Multiple regression analysis indicated that the improvement of sympathovagal balance and aerobic capacity depended on patients' participation in exercise training.

Postpartum hemorrhage and postpartum depression: A systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies

Discovering interactions in augmentation strategies: Impact of duloxetine on the metabolism of aripiprazole

Summary: This study aimed to investigate potential pharmacokinetic interactions between aripiprazole and duloxetine. Plasma concentrations of aripiprazole were compared in two groups of 78 patients each, receiving aripiprazole as a monotherapy or combined with duloxetine. Results showed significantly higher plasma concentrations of aripiprazole in patients co-medicated with duloxetine. Therefore, clinicians need to consider the increased concentrations of aripiprazole when adding duloxetine to the treatment regimen.

Summary: Neurological soft signs are possible indicators of abnormal neurodevelopment and neural connectivity. They are not exclusive to schizophrenia, but they appear to be a trait characteristic in psychosis and can serve as an objective measure for serious psychiatric disorder assessment. Neurocognitive deficits may contribute to the construct of NSS, and they may help identify individuals at risk of developing schizophrenia later in life.

The study found a clinical depression rate of 13.16%, with male doctors and 'non-binary genders' having the lowest rates and 'non-binary gender' nurses and administrative staff having the highest rates. The study also highlighted a deterioration in mental state, family dynamics, and everyday lifestyle for some participants.

Home-Based Exercise Training and Cardiac Autonomic Neuropathy in Kidney Transplant Recipients with Type-II Diabetes Mellitus

Summary: This randomized clinical trial aimed to examine the effects of a 6-month home-based, combined exercise training program on Cardiac Autonomic Neuropathy (CAN) in kidney transplant recipients (KTRs) with diabetes. The results showed that the participants who underwent the exercise training program had significant improvements in exercise time, VO2peak, muscle strength, and cardiac autonomic function. In summary, a home-based long-term exercise training program can improve the cardiac autonomic function and functional capacity of diabetic kidney transplant recipients.

Summary: This study assessed the impact of participation in a summer diabetes sports camp on physical activity and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) for children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). The results showed no significant differences in physical activity levels and HRQoL parameters between the intervention group (attending the camp) and the control group. This suggests that a 10-day diabetes sports camp may not effectively improve physical activity and HRQoL for children with T1DM.

EEG source functional connectivity in patients after a recent suicide attempt

Summary: This study investigated the association between EEG-based connectivity measures within the alpha frequency range and suicidal thoughts, behaviors, and depression. The results showed no significant differences in connectivity between patients after a suicide attempt and healthy controls, but significantly increased nonlinear connectivity was found in patients with a depressive disorder. The nonlinear connectivity within the alpha frequency range outperformed other models in explaining depressive symptom severity.

The role of norepinephrine reuptake inhibition in cariprazine's mechanism of action requires further clarification.

Switching antipsychotics to partial dopamine D2-agonists in individuals affected by schizophrenia: a narrative review

Summary: This review aims to analyze the literature on the clinical outcome of individuals with schizophrenia who were treated with different antipsychotics and switched to orally administered partial D2-dopamine agonists. The findings suggest that there is no clear evidence for a preferable switching strategy, and a standardized clinical protocol should be developed for comparisons between studies.
