Summary: This study found that approximately 1 in 4 patients receiving opioid therapy for cancer pain had abnormal results in random UDT testing. Random UDT was able to detect abnormalities earlier than targeted UDT. These findings suggest that random UDT may be justified in patients with cancer pain.

Summary: The study found that while there was an increasing trend in urine drug testing from 2012 to 2018, annual and baseline urine drug testing rates remained low in 2018, relative to numerous guideline recommendations. This highlights the need for research on better guideline implementation strategies and the effectiveness of urine drug testing on patient outcomes.

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of a urine drug testing policy in labor and delivery on the number of drug tests performed, racial disparities, testing indications, and neonatal outcomes. The results showed that implementing the policy improved consent for testing, reduced racial disparities, and did not affect neonatal outcomes.

Summary: The urine drug test is commonly used in reproductive healthcare, but its application is often biased and stigmatizing, leading to incorrect decisions and negative effects on society and legal systems. This paper proposes a framework to reflect on the use of urine drug tests, including the question being answered, the risks and benefits, alternative decision-making tools, and biases. Using this framework, the paper analyzes three common uses of urine drug tests in abortion and labor and delivery settings.

Summary: This study examined the use of immunoassay urine drug testing in cancer patients in palliative care clinics. The results showed that 27% of patients tested within the first three visits had aberrant results, with 35% testing positive for cocaine. Non-Hispanic White race, history of illicit drug use, and history of marijuana use were independent predictors of aberrant urine drug testing results.

Summary: The increasing number of problems associated with drug abuse requires new approaches in drug testing systems. This study investigated common tampering methods used by Turkish probationers. It was found that dilution and substitution were the most commonly used methods, with bleach and drain opener causing false-negative results while eye drops had a slight impact on MDMA.

Summary: This paper presents general guidelines for ensuring the well-being of horses kept for production of biologics. Pharmaceutical products have been derived from horse blood and urine for over a century, with production often occurring in regions with little regulation. Guidance has been developed to support the welfare of horses maintained for these purposes.

Summary: Delayed use of appropriate antibiotics for super bugs, especially ESBL-producing E.coli and K. pn, has caused significant morbidity and mortality globally. There is an urgent need for rapid on-site antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST). Inspired by the rapid catalysis of H2O2 by E.coli and K.pn, we developed a plasmonic nanosensor for quick AST. The results can be easily determined with the naked eye or digitized with a smartphone and validated using ultraviolet-visible spectrometry. Our assay achieved high accuracy directly from clinical urine samples infected by E.coli and K.pn, with a short analysis time.

Summary: This study demonstrates that FujiLAM testing performs equally well on spot and early morning urine samples for detecting tuberculosis among people with HIV. Sensitivity can be increased with a two-sample strategy, but at the risk of lower specificity. These findings can inform future guidelines and clinical practices.

The results supported the hypothesis that magnitude scaling provides stronger evidence of validity, while the true score theory measures showed weak relations with provocation.

Summary: This study compared the results of presumptive drug testing and direct-to-definitive drug testing using urine and oral fluid as test matrices. The confirmed immunoassay (IA) prevalences were higher in urine for most drug classes, except for two drug classes which showed higher prevalences in oral fluid. Overall, the drug detection by direct-to-definitive testing was similar for both urine and oral fluid, but the choice of matrix may depend on the specific drug of interest or concerns about tampering with urine specimens.

Summary: This case report describes a case where imatinib led to a false-positive amphetamine result on urine drug testing. A 21-year-old female with chronic myelocytic leukemia and history of opioid use disorder reinitiated imatinib therapy during her third trimester of pregnancy, resulting in positive amphetamine test results which were later found to be false through further testing.

Summary: The lifetime prevalence of alcohol use disorder is higher among individuals with binge eating disorder compared to those without, with a relative risk of more than 1.5 times higher. The prevalence of alcohol use disorder is higher in community samples than in clinical samples, and in studies with a lower proportion of women.

Summary: Alcohol craving is associated with insomnia symptoms, and anxiety symptoms mediate the association between emotional dysregulation and insomnia severity. Insomnia diagnosis moderates the association between emotional dysregulation and anxiety symptoms. Treating anxiety symptoms and emotional dysregulation can help prevent or alleviate insomnia symptoms in individuals with AUD. Treating insomnia in individuals with AUD may also have a positive effect on anxiety symptoms.

Summary: Collective traumas have a noticeable impact on adolescent well-being, with some at increased risk for mental health problems and others demonstrating resilience. The degree of social isolation plays a role in post-trauma well-being. This study examined the association between maltreatment and internalizing problems during the COVID-19 pandemic, finding that less isolation was related to lower anxiety symptoms for adolescents with pre-pandemic emotional abuse, but higher anxiety and depressive symptoms for those with pre-pandemic physical abuse. The findings highlight the importance of a public health-oriented approach to youth well-being during collective trauma beyond disease mitigation.
