A single nucleotide polymorphism (rs7341475) in RELN has recently been shown to be associated with schizophrenia (SZ) in an Ashkenazi Jewish (AJ) case-control study specifically in women by Shifman et al. We have replicated this association in women in another large independent Ashkenazi Jewish collection (721 cases, 259 female; 1455 controls, 834 female) and confirmed that it applies to both SZ and schizoaffective disorder. Furthermore, we explore the effects of this polymorphism through quantitative trait loci analysis of nine SZ related factors providing information on sex-specific genotype-phenotype correlations. Nadorff, Ilona Merikanto, Bjorn Bjorvatn, Fang Han, Bin Zhang, Ana Suely Cunha, Sergio Mota-Rolim, Damien Leger, Kentaro Matsui, Colin A. Espie, Frances Chung, Charles M. Morin, Mariusz Sieminski, Penzel Thomas, Brigitte Holzinger, Markku Partinen, Yun Kwok Wing

Summary: This study investigated the prevalence and correlates of dream-enactment behaviours during the COVID-19 pandemic and found a higher percentage of dream-enactment behaviours among individuals with COVID-19 and certain risk factors such as young age, male sex, smoking, alcohol consumption, higher physical activity level, nightmares, COVID-19 diagnosis, olfactory impairment, obstructive sleep apnea symptoms, mood, and post-traumatic stress disorder features. Further research is needed to explore the potential neurodegenerative effects of COVID-19.

Impaired glymphatic drainage underlying obstructive sleep apnea is associated with cognitive dysfunction

Jiuqi Wang, Yiming Tian, Chi Qin, Lin Meng, Renyi Feng, Shuqin Xu, Yanping Zhai, Dongxiao Liang, Rui Zhang, Haiyan Tian, Han Liu, Yongkang Chen, Yu Fu, Pei Chen, Qingyong Zhu, Junfang Teng, Xuejing Wang

Summary: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a prevalent and potentially undiagnosed condition that increases the risk of cognitive impairment. The study found a correlation between morphological changes in perivascular spaces (PVSs) and cognitive impairment in OSA patients. Additionally, novel magnetic resonance imaging methods were developed to assess the fluid dynamics of the glymphatic drainage system, which showed significant changes in inflow and outflow parameters in OSA patients. These changes were associated with cognitive impairment and hypoxia levels. Treatment with continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) improved the functionality of the glymphatic drainage system in OSA patients.

Relationships between inflammation markers and the risk of hypertension in primary Sjogren's syndrome: A retrospective cohort study

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the association between inflammation markers and the risk of developing hypertension in patients with primary Sjogren's syndrome (pSS). The findings showed a significant association between erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), neutrophils, and incident hypertension, and a dose-response relationship was also observed.

Summary: A novel heterozygous mutation in the C19orf12 gene, c273_274 insA (p.P92Tfs*9), was identified in a Taiwanese family with autosomal dominant MPAN. This study provided clinical, genetic, and mechanistic insights into the pathogenesis of MPAN, highlighting the importance of mitochondrial dysfunction.

Early- and late-onset of isolated rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder: A retrospective cohort study

Summary: This study aimed to determine whether age at onset could identify clinical and neurodegenerative profiles in patients with isolated/idiopathic rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder (iRBD). The results showed that late-onset iRBD patients were more likely to exhibit neurodegenerative symptoms and had a quicker progression to probable DLB. Age at onset could help identify clinical features and predict the prognosis of iRBD.

Gut microbiome dysbiosis across early Parkinson's disease, REM sleep behavior disorder and their first-degree relatives

Summary: The study reveals that the gut microbiota compositions are significantly altered in early PD and RBD compared with control and RBD-FDR. The depletion of butyrate-producing bacteria and the enrichment of pro-inflammatory Collinsella have emerged in RBD and RBD-FDR after controlling potential confounders. The study also identifies 12 microbial markers that can effectively distinguish RBD from control.

Summary: Hearing impairment is a common disorder in children, and targeted NGS-based genetic examinations can help in prognosis and management. The diagnostic performance of a simplified 30-gene NGS panel was evaluated and compared with an original 214-gene NGS panel in different patient subgroups. The two panels showed no significant difference in diagnostic yield, except for a lower detection rate of the 30-gene panel in the late-onset group.

Sex differences in rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Summary: The existing evidence for the sex difference in the risk of rapid eye movement (REM) sleep behavior disorder (RBD) in the general population is conflicting. This study conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to explore the sex differences in the prevalence, comorbidities, clinical characteristics, and phenoconversion of RBD. The results showed that males had a higher risk of RBD, especially among older adults. However, there was no significant sex difference in the risk of developing neurodegenerative diseases in patients with RBD.

Yun Feng, Yaping Liu, Qian Zhao, Jiao Zhu, Xiaona Kang, Chen Mi, Peijie Li, Weizhi Li, Guifang Lu, Ai Jia, Shuixiang He, Hongxia Li

Summary: The objective of this study was to investigate the incidence, characteristics, risk factors, and prognosis of liver injury in patients with COVID-19. Clinical data of 384 COVID-19 cases were collected and analyzed retrospectively to determine the incidence, characteristics, and risk factors associated with liver injury in these patients. The study found that 23.7% of COVID-19 patients had liver injury, with elevated levels of liver function markers compared to the control group. Risk factors for liver injury included age, history of liver diseases, alcoholic abuse, body mass index, severity of COVID-19, inflammatory markers, treatment, and critical care admission. Most patients with liver injury were treated with hepatoprotective drugs and showed normal liver function at 2 months after discharge. In conclusion, liver injury is common in COVID-19 patients with specific risk factors, but most cases have mild elevations in liver enzymes and respond well to conservative treatment.
