Summary: Reelin protein is implicated in psychiatric disorders, but its effects on the structure and neuronal composition of the striatum are not well understood. This study found that overexpression of Reelin protein increases the numbers of striatal interneurons and cholinergic neurons, and slightly increases the tyrosine hydroxylase-positive projections from the substantia nigra to the striatum. These findings suggest that increased levels of Reelin may protect against neuropsychiatric disorders by modifying these structures and neuronal numbers.

Significant heterogeneity was found in genetic associations between cognitive traits and psychiatric disorders, as well as behavior and brain imaging, between sexes.

Further research is needed to explore the potential neurodegenerative effects of COVID-19.

Summary: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a prevalent and potentially undiagnosed condition that increases the risk of cognitive impairment. The study found a correlation between morphological changes in perivascular spaces (PVSs) and cognitive impairment in OSA patients. Additionally, novel magnetic resonance imaging methods were developed to assess the fluid dynamics of the glymphatic drainage system, which showed significant changes in inflow and outflow parameters in OSA patients. These changes were associated with cognitive impairment and hypoxia levels. Treatment with continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) improved the functionality of the glymphatic drainage system in OSA patients.

Summary: Hearing impairment is a common disorder in children, and targeted NGS-based genetic examinations can help in prognosis and management. The diagnostic performance of a simplified 30-gene NGS panel was evaluated and compared with an original 214-gene NGS panel in different patient subgroups. The two panels showed no significant difference in diagnostic yield, except for a lower detection rate of the 30-gene panel in the late-onset group.

Summary: The existing evidence for the sex difference in the risk of rapid eye movement (REM) sleep behavior disorder (RBD) in the general population is conflicting. This study conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to explore the sex differences in the prevalence, comorbidities, clinical characteristics, and phenoconversion of RBD. The results showed that males had a higher risk of RBD, especially among older adults. However, there was no significant sex difference in the risk of developing neurodegenerative diseases in patients with RBD.

Summary: The objective of this study was to investigate the incidence, characteristics, risk factors, and prognosis of liver injury in patients with COVID-19. Clinical data of 384 COVID-19 cases were collected and analyzed retrospectively to determine the incidence, characteristics, and risk factors associated with liver injury in these patients. The study found that 23.7% of COVID-19 patients had liver injury, with elevated levels of liver function markers compared to the control group. Risk factors for liver injury included age, history of liver diseases, alcoholic abuse, body mass index, severity of COVID-19, inflammatory markers, treatment, and critical care admission. Most patients with liver injury were treated with hepatoprotective drugs and showed normal liver function at 2 months after discharge. In conclusion, liver injury is common in COVID-19 patients with specific risk factors, but most cases have mild elevations in liver enzymes and respond well to conservative treatment.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the association between accelerometer-measured rest-activity rhythm and health risks. The results showed a significant association between low rest-activity rhythm amplitude and cardiovascular diseases, cancer, infectious diseases, respiratory diseases, digestive diseases, as well as all-cause mortality and disease-specific mortality. These findings provide further evidence for risk-modifying strategies associated with rest-activity rhythm to improve health and longevity.
