There is growing interest into researching omega-3 fatty acids; however, there are considerable variations in the methodologies employed. Many studies add oils to animal feed and under ambient conditions omega-3 fatty acids are particularly unstable and prone to autoxidation and peroxidative damage. It is therefore important to take specific precautions with the stock preparations and when preparing the experimental diets. There is a need for clarity in the reporting of methodologies employed, such as how oil preparations are stored and handled, how experimental diets are prepared, the potential effects of adding additional antioxidants, whether there is a clear rationale for the selection of control/placebo diets, which may be situation dependent, and consistency in expressing the experimental doses. The purpose of this article is to highlight some of these issues in the hope of promoting discussion, and potentially developing guidelines as to what represents best practice. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. Effects of storage practices on long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids and lipid peroxidation of preterm formula milk

Summary: The study found that storage conditions of preterm formula milk do not support in utero accretion rates for LCPUFAs. Although it is clear that powdered formula is more susceptible to lipid peroxidation during refrigeration, specific recommendations still require further research.

Summary: This study aims to investigate the effects of a high eicosapentaenoic acid multinutrient supplement on anxiety and depression in healthy university students through a randomized double-blind placebo-controlled trial. The primary outcome is improvement in anxiety assessed via the Generalised Anxiety Disorder Assessment-7 scale. The study will last for 24 weeks with participants receiving active treatment or placebo.

Summary: There is evidence to suggest that increasing intake of both B vitamins and n-3 PUFA may benefit cognition in older adults. This systematic review found that a combination of n-3 PUFA and B vitamins as part of a multi-nutrient formula improves cognitive function in older adults compared to a placebo.

Summary: Polyunsaturated fatty acids are important components of cell membranes and play a role in cellular function. They can also serve as precursors for lipid mediators called oxylipins. Oxylipins are formed through enzymatic or non-enzymatic pathways and include eicosanoids and other lipid mediators. This review summarizes current knowledge about the structure and functions of nonclassical oxylipins.

Effects of long-chain omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids on reducing anxiety and/or depression in adults; A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials

Christos F. Kelaiditis, E. Leigh Gibson, Simon C. Dyall

Summary: This study conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of ten randomized controlled trials with a total of 1426 participants. The results showed that EPA-enriched interventions with proportions > 60% of total EPA + DHA and doses between > 1 g/day and < 2 g/day significantly reduced the severity of depression. However, EPA doses > 2 g/day did not show significant therapeutic effects. The efficacy of EPA, DHA, and DPAn-3 in reducing anxiety severity was uncertain. More high-quality trials are needed to further explore the therapeutic potential of these omega-3 PUFAs.

A new ketogenic formulation improves functional outcome and reduces tissue loss following traumatic brain injury in adult mice

Summary: The new ketogenic diet (KD) with a ratio of 2:1 of fat to carbohydrate plus protein showed neuroprotective potential in adult traumatic brain injury (TBI). It significantly improved sensorimotor deficits and spatial memory, reduced lesion size, inflammation, oxidation, and oligodendrocyte loss. The new formulation demonstrated therapeutic potential in adult TBI by enhancing the mTOR pathway and histone modifications.
