Summary: This study presents the maternal-fetal immune responses triggered by SARS-CoV-2 infection during pregnancy and highlights the rarity of placental infection. A T-cell dominant inflammatory response is observed at the maternal-fetal interface, but the virus remains undetectable in the placenta while triggering specific immune responses in the neonatal circulation.

Summary: Shared decision-making is crucial when counseling pregnant and nursing women about the unstudied benefits and risks of COVID-19 vaccination. Rigorously designed studies with real-time, proactive data collection are needed to establish evidence quickly about the safety of coronavirus vaccines in mothers and their infants.

Summary: Maternal diabetes and high-fat diet have similar adverse effects on the health of F1 and F2 generations, including infertility, decreased insulin sensitivity, and fetal growth restriction. The combination of both factors also results in increased lipoperoxidation, decreased glucose tolerance, and increased fetal leptin levels.

Summary: The workshop discussed the impact of drug exposure during pregnancy and lactation on mothers and infants, addressing the gaps in knowledge on drug selection and dosing in these situations. Collaborative efforts were made to define key standards for generating pharmacology data for antiretrovirals in pregnant and lactating women, with a focus on conducting optimal studies for rapid implementation in clinical settings.

Summary: The workshop aimed to define key standards for generating pharmacology data for antiretrovirals for use among pregnant and lactating women, review the antiretroviral product pipeline, describe key gaps for use in low-income and middle-income countries, and identify opportunities for undertaking optimal studies allowing for rapid implementation in the clinical field.

Summary: This study assessed the immunogenicity of COVID-19 mRNA vaccines in pregnant and lactating women, as well as the responses against emerging SARS-CoV-2 variants. The results showed that pregnant, lactating, and nonpregnant women developed antibody and T-cell responses following vaccination, with antibodies transferred to infant cord blood and breast milk. While antibody titers against the B.1.1.7 and B.1.351 variants were reduced, T-cell responses remained against the viral variants.

Summary: A study conducted in Nekemte Public Health facilities found that factors associated with HIV status disclosure among pregnant and lactating women included residing in urban areas, being married, having higher educational status, having a partner with positive HIV status, and being multipara. Empowering women through education, encouraging partners for HIV testing, and enhancing male involvement in HIV treatment programs are important strategies to improve HIV status disclosure rates in the study area.

Summary: The study found that mothers generally have four main needs during the postpartum period: for information, psychological support, sharing experiences, and practical support. While the need for information was more prominent during pregnancy, mothers used the Internet more frequently for information after childbirth. Satisfaction with psychological support decreased postpartum, and the need for practical support also increased.

Summary: This systematic review and meta-analysis evaluated the effectiveness of interventions targeting antiretroviral adherence in HIV-infected pregnant women. The study found that enhanced standard of care, enhanced standard of care with a supporter, and device reminder were significant interventions for improving medication adherence.

Summary: The study showed that a low-glycemic load (GL) diet during the second half of pregnancy did not significantly improve glucose and metabolic parameters in obese women. However, compared to non-study women, dietary counseling reduced the risk of adverse outcomes.

Summary: The adherence to the Healthy Food Pyramid (HFP) was investigated among pregnant, lactating, and non-pregnant/non-lactating (NPNL) women. Lactating women had the lowest adherence score, while pregnant women had the highest. Maternal age was positively correlated with adherence in pregnant and lactating women, and factors like educational level and monthly income influenced adherence positively. Targeting nutritional interventions towards breastfeeding mothers of young age and low socioeconomic and educational levels may improve adherence to the HFP. The findings can help in designing recommendation guidelines and nutritional educational interventions for specific populations.

Summary: This study investigated the maternal and perinatal outcomes in pregnant women with COVID-19. The results showed a significant association between ICU admission and parameters such as dyspnea, COVID-19-related CT scan findings, need for a ventilator, and low O-2 saturation, indicating a critical situation for patients. Additionally, ICU admission was associated with delivery route, frequency of IUGR, neonatal death and asphyxia, Apgar score, and gestational age at delivery.
