TSC22D1, which encodes transforming growth factor beta-stimulated clone 22 (TSC-22), is thought to be a tumor suppressor because its expression is lost in many glioblastoma, salivary gland, and prostate cancers. TSC-22 is the founding member of the TSC-22/DIP/Bun family of leucine zipper transcription factors; its functions have not been investigated in a multicellular environment. Genetic studies in the model organism Drosophila melanogaster often provide fundamental insights into mechanisms disrupted in carcinogenesis, because of the strong evolutionary conservation of molecular mechanisms between flies and humans. Whereas humans and mice have four TSC-22 domain genes with numerous isoforms, Drosophila has only one TSC-22 domain gene, bunched (bun), which encodes both large and small protein isoforms. Surprisingly, Drosophila Bun proteins promote cellular growth and proliferation in ovarian follicle cells. Loss of both large isoforms has the strongest phenotypes, including increased apoptosis. Cultured S2 cells depleted for large Bun isoforms show increased apoptosis and less frequent cell division, with decreased cell size. Altogether, these data indicate that Drosophila TSC-22/DIP/Bun proteins are necessary for cellular growth, proliferation, and survival both in culture and in an epithelial context. Previous work demonstrated that bun prevents recruitment of epithelial cells to a migratory fate and, thus, maintains epithelial organization. We speculate that reduced TSC22D1 expression generally reduces cellular fitness and only contributes to carcinogenesis in specific tissue environments.

Constraining baryon annihilation in the hadronic phase of heavy-ion collisions via event-by-event fluctuations

Oleh Savchuk, Volodymyr Vovchenko, Volker Koch, Jan Steinheimer, Horst Stoecker

Summary: This study points out that the variance of net-baryon distribution normalized by the Skellam distribution baseline, kappa(2)[B - (B) over bar]/ < B + ($) over bar >, can sensitively detect possible modifications of (anti)baryon yields due to B (B) over bar annihilation in the hadronic phase. The corresponding measurements can place stringent limits on the magnitude of the B (B) over bar annihilation and its inverse reaction. Through Monte Carlo simulations and analysis of experimental data, it is found that this effect exists in net-proton fluctuations and can be distinguished by measuring kappa(2)[B + (B) over bar]/ < B + (B) over bar >, which is significantly suppressed by annihilations at the LHC.

The dark side of the torsion: dark energy from propagating torsion

D. Benisty, E. Guendelman, A. van de Venn, D. Vasak, J. Struckmeier, H. Stoecker

Summary: An extension to the Einstein-Cartan action is discussed in terms of cosmological solutions. The dynamics of torsion, represented by a time-like axial vector, is invoked by a novel kinetic term. It is shown that this kinetic term gives rise to dark energy, while the quadratic torsion term represents a stiff fluid that leads to a bouncing cosmology solution.

Summary: This study proposes an automated approach called the Adaptive-Window Volcanic Event Selection Analysis Module (AWESAM) to generate catalogs of volcanic eruptions. The module is capable of reliably detecting both small and frequent events as well as major explosions. Testing on seismic recordings from Stromboli volcano in Italy showed that AWESAM can accurately identify and record volcano events.

On the cosmological constant in the deformed Einstein-Cartan gauge gravity in De Donder-Weyl Hamiltonian formulation

David Vasak, Johannes Kirsch, Juergen Struckmeier, Horst Stoecker

Summary: The Covariant Canonical Gauge Gravity (CCGG), a modification of the Einstein-Hilbert theory, provides an explanation for the origin of the cosmological constant. This theory, based on canonical transformation theory and the De Donder-Weyl Hamiltonian formulation, modifies the Einstein-Hilbert Lagrangian of the gravitational field. It predicts that the total energy-momentum of the space-time and matter system is zero, and the observed cosmological constant is a small correction related to deviations from flat geometry and the complex dynamical geometry of space-time.

Two phases for centripetal migration of Drosophila melanogaster follicle cells: initial ingression followed by epithelial migration

Travis T. Parsons, Sheila Mosallaei, Laurel A. Raftery

Summary: During Drosophila oogenesis, somatic follicle cells differentiate and secrete components of the eggshell. A timeline of reproducible milestones for centripetal migration, which encloses the oocyte after secretion, is defined using time-lapse imaging of egg chamber explants. Inward migration occurs in two phases, with leading centripetal follicle cells ingressing over the anterior oocyte first and then followed by collective movement of the following cells towards the anterior. E-cadherin is required for normal ingression of the leading cells.

Fluctuations in heavy ion collisions and global conservation effects

Roman Poberezhnyuk, Volodymyr Voychenko, Oleh Savchuki, Volker Koch, Mark Gorenstein, Horst Stoecker

Summary: Subensemble is a statistical ensemble that generalizes the grand canonical and canonical ensembles. The subensemble acceptance method (SAM) provides general formulas to correct the cumulants of distributions in heavy-ion collisions for the global conservation of all QCD charges. The method is applicable for an arbitrary equation of state and sufficiently large systems, such as those created in central collisions of heavy ions. New fluctuation measures insensitive to global conservation effects are presented, with main results demonstrated in the contexts of the hadron resonance gas and van der Waals fluid frameworks.

Molecular dynamics analysis of particle number fluctuations in the mixed phase of a first-order phase transition

Volodymyr A. Kuznietsov, Oleh Savchuk, Roman Poberezhnyuk, Volodymyr Vovchenko, Mark I. Gorenstein, Horst Stoecker

Summary: Molecular dynamics simulations are used to investigate the effect of liquid-gas mixed phase on particle number fluctuations in a finite nonrelativistic system with Lennard-Jones potential. A nucleation region of the mixed phase, known as the metastable region, is analyzed using a noninteracting cluster model. Large fluctuations caused by spinodal decomposition are observed, which are influenced by the size of the acceptance region and the liquid phase. A simple geometric model is utilized to study these effects, and the results are compared with direct molecular dynamic simulations.

Reconstructing the neutron star equation of state from observational data via automatic differentiation

Shriya Soma, Lingxiao Wang, Shuzhe Shi, Horst Stoecker, Kai Zhou

Summary: Neutron star observables, such as masses, radii, and tidal deformability, provide valuable insights into the equation of state (EoS) of dense matter. A new deep learning method that utilizes an automatic differentiation framework for solving inverse problems is introduced. The trained neural network EoS produces precise relationships between pressure, speed of sound, and mass density, consistent with conventional approaches and the observed bound on tidal deformability from the gravitational wave event, GW170817.

Summary: Feynman path integrals provide a probabilistic perspective for quantum physics by summing over all possible paths to estimate physical observables. This study proposes a Fourier-flow generative model to simulate the Feynman propagator and generate quantum system paths. By accurately estimating the ground-state wave function and low-lying energy levels of harmonic and anharmonic oscillators, our method offers a novel approach to investigating quantum systems using machine learning-assisted Feynman path integral solving.

The equilibrium and dynamical cumulants of QCD chiral order parameter with parametric Landau free energy

Lijia Jiang, Horst Stoecker, Jun-Hui Zheng

Summary: By parameterizing the QCD Landau free energy and studying the fluctuations of the QCD chiral order parameter field near the critical point, we find that the discontinuity of the order parameter is replaced by smooth crossover in the equilibrium case, and the corresponding fluctuations are broadened. In addition, we derive the dynamical evolution of the QCD Landau free energy and deduce the dynamical cumulants of the sigma field, showing clear memory effects and rich non-monotonic structures at the hypothetical freeze-out line.

Quarkyonic matter with quantum van der Waals theory

Roman Poberezhnyuk, Horst Stoecker, Volodymyr Vovchenko

Summary: This article introduces a method of incorporating the low-density properties of isospin symmetric nuclear matter into the excluded-volume model for quarkyonic matter and investigates the effect of variations in the nucleon excluded volume mechanism on the equation of state. The results show that the nuclear liquid undergoes a transition and transforms into quarkyonic matter at densities achievable in intermediate energy heavy-ion collisions, accompanied by a peak in sound velocity. The study also suggests that the baryquark matter scenario is energetically favored for the realization of the Pauli exclusion principle.
