Summary: In this study, short-term heat treatment was found to have a significant impact on the structure, molecular weight, and gel rheology of commercial carrageenans. Heat caused desulphation and degradation of furcellaran galactans, leading to a decrease in viscosity and gel hardness. Storage modulus values of carrageenan gels decreased with increasing treatment temperature, with the greatest decrease seen in kappa/lambda-carrageenan gels.

Summary: In this study, green gold nanoparticles (BTE-GNPs) prepared from black tea extract were used to examine the chemosensitivity of colon cancer cells (HCT116) to doxorubicin. The results showed that BTE-GNPs significantly enhanced the cytotoxic effect of doxorubicin in HCT116 cells, leading to apoptosis through a ROS-dependent pathway.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of graphene oxide (GO) on tubulin structure using biophysical techniques, revealing that GO disrupts the structural integrity of the protein and slows down tubulin polymerization. GO exhibits greater toxicity towards human colon cancer cells, inducing apoptosis through the disruption of microtubule assembly and arrest in the S phase of the cell cycle. Additionally, GO does not cause significant harm to the control human embryonic kidney epithelial cells (HEK293), suggesting its potential use in cancer therapeutics and nanomedicine.

Summary: Dietary phytochemicals, such as soyasaponins, have been found to play a significant role in the prevention and treatment of colon cancer. In this study, the researchers screened the anti-colon cancer activity of a specific type of soyasaponin, soyasaponins I (SsI), and found that it had an inhibitory effect on the proliferation of colon cancer cell lines HCT116 and LoVo. Further analysis revealed that SsI may exert its effects through influencing amino acid metabolism and the estrogen signaling pathway. This study suggests the potential application of SsI in the treatment of colon cancer.

Summary: Mitochondria in aerobic eukaryotic cells not only produce energy but also harmful substances such as ROS, and possess an efficient antioxidant system to detoxify these substances. As ROS production increases, mitochondria are damaged and release more harmful substances, but their antioxidant system can detoxify exogenous ROS at the expense of reducing the equivalents generated in mitochondria.

Summary: The development of greener processes for the sustainable utilization of raw materials is increasingly demanded for environmental and economic reasons. A rapid and chemical-free technique for the extraction of hybrid kappa/iota (6/4) carrageenan from Sarcopeltis (ex Gigartina) skottsbergii was proposed. The extracted carrageenans showed suitable rheological properties for commercial uses, and the microwave-assisted hydrothermal treatment was found to be an efficient tool for carrageenan extraction without the need for chemicals.

Summary: The ethanolic bark extract of Terminalia arjuna tree contains bio-active compound arjunetin, which exhibits inhibition of catalase activity and potential antiviral activity, particularly against SARS-CoV-2. Molecular docking and dynamics studies show that arjunetin has higher binding affinity than Remdesivir in targeting key proteins of the virus. These findings suggest that arjunetin could be a promising drug candidate against Covid-19.
