Summary: This article presents a two-step synthesis method for synthesizing calcium carbonate using ammonium carbonate and calcium chloride as raw materials. The pH of the mineralized solution was studied under different factors, such as temperature and ammonium carbonate concentration. The results showed that increasing the temperature promoted the formation of submicron calcite type calcium carbonate, while changing the concentration of ammonium carbonate had little effect on the crystal phase and size of the product.

Summary: Carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology can greatly reduce CO2 emissions from power plants and kilns by 85 to 95%. Among CCS technologies, carbon dioxide capture using steel slag involves carbonating minerals with CO2 by combining oxidized metals in the slag. This study evaluated the performance of a mineral carbonation plant in capturing and sequestering CO2, achieving an average CO2 sequestration efficiency of 89.7%, demonstrating the effectiveness of mineral carbonation products in storing CO2 as chemically stable CaCO3.

Summary: This study evaluated the physical and chemical effects of calcium carbonate limestone filler in mortar pastes subjected to accelerated carbonation. Results showed that a 25% filler substitution at a water/cement ratio of 0.42 achieved the best performance in terms of compression strength and water absorption. Carbonation primarily affected by the water/cement ratio rather than substitution level, consuming portlandite and forming calcite. Further studies identified additional calcium carbonate polymorphs after 28 days of accelerated carbonation.

Summary: The study shows that inert additive-doped CaO-based CO2 adsorbents can be synthesized in one pot by the mechanochemical method, producing methane instead of CO2 emission. The prepared CaO@C and CaO@MgO@C composites exhibit high CO2 adsorption capacity and superior cycling stability, with much lower activity losses after 30 cycles compared to conventional adsorbents. This work provides a novel, simple, solution-free, and sustainable strategy for synthesizing effective CaO-based CO2 adsorbents.

Summary: In this study, printable gamma-C2S slurries were developed based on the carbonation of calcium silicate, and their printability was demonstrated using extrusion-based layer deposition. The rheology of the slurry was controlled by three modifying agents, including CMC, HPMC, and PAM. The printed samples exhibited high compressive strength and inter-layer bonding strength, which can be attributed to the diffusion of carbonation reaction and densification by carbonation products. The proposed printing-carbonation synergistic enhancement technique allows for independent design and expands the diversity of geometrical designs in 3D printing structures.

Summary: The extensive use of Portland cement with a large carbon footprint has caused a significant climate crisis. The proportions of β-C2S and γ-C2S in C2S paste are positively correlated with compressive strength and carbonation degree. An optimum value of compressive strength (54.4 MPa) and carbonation degree (36.7%) can be achieved when β-C2S is 60 wt% and γ-C2S is 40 wt%.

Summary: This study investigated the application of amino acids in controlling CaCO3 crystallization in carbonation cured wollastonite composites. The use of amino acids resulted in the formation of stable ACC, vaterite, and aragonite, as well as enhanced flexural and compressive strength of the composites. These improvements were attributed to the reduced critical pore size and the formation of organic-inorganic hybrid phases in the matrix.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of reaction and carbonation degrees on the reaction products of calcium silicate cement (CSC) during the hardening process in a high atmospheric CO2 concentration. The results show that stable C-S-H phase can form when the carbonation degree is less than one-third of the reaction degree. At higher carbonation degrees and depleted C-S-H, amorphous aluminosilicate and calcite become the main binding phases.

Summary: The incorporation of carbon fixation components (calcium hydroxide) can enhance the carbon fixation performance of foam concrete but reduce its mechanical properties. To mitigate the adverse effects and optimize carbon absorption properties, a certain amount of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) was added. The study investigated the production process of nano-modified foam and analyzed the properties, micromorphology, pore structure, and mineral phases of the foam concrete.

Summary: Calcium looping (CaL)-based solar to thermochemical energy storage is a promising option for long-term thermal energy storage in concentrated solar power generation. In this study, multi-doping of transition metals and CaCl2 was investigated to enhance the optical absorption and carbonation reactivity of synthetic CaO-based materials. The proposed materials exhibited significantly enhanced optical absorption and maintained high performance throughout multiple cycles of CaL reactions. The reaction mechanism was studied, and a salt-promoted carbonation mechanism was proposed to improve the mass transfer of Ca2+O2- to adsorbed CO2. Based on the findings, the synergistic use of CaCl2 multi-doping method for synthetic CaO designs is suggested.

Summary: A novel method using Ca(OH)2 solution to extract agar from Gracilaria algae was explored. The Ca(OH)2 extraction resulted in higher gel strength and similar agar yield compared to traditional NaOH extraction methods. Moreover, the Ca(OH)2 method showed less degradation of agar and reduced wastewater, making it a more sustainable option for agar production.

Summary: A thin liquid film method is proposed to evaluate sand erosion in annular flow. This method considers the direct interaction between the liquid film and gas core, as well as the entrainment and deposition of droplets. The erosion rate is calculated by considering the effects of liquid entrainment and particle velocity decay. The method is fully verified by comparing with experimental data.

Summary: A new micro/mini-channel heat sink (MCHS) with a combined structure of longitudinal and transverse vortex generators is designed, using Al2O3 nanofluid as the working medium. The study explores the effects of transverse vortex generator shape and longitudinal vortex generator angle on the hydraulic and thermal characteristics, comprehensive performance, entropy generation, and exergy efficiency. The results show that the triangular transverse vortex generator improves the comprehensive performance and exergy efficiency. Combined with the longitudinal vortex generator, the MCHS achieves the best comprehensive performance, entropy generation, and exergy efficiency when the Reynolds number is 742.

Summary: In this study, a numerical model of sand triaxial test was established using discrete element software PFC3D, and an indoor triaxial test was conducted to calibrate the numerical model. The influence of microscopic parameters on the macroscopic mechanical response of sand was analyzed. The results showed that the friction coefficient had the greatest impact on the peak strength and residual strength of the sand's stress-strain curve, and it was positively correlated. The normal tangential stiffness ratio was negatively correlated, while the porosity and boundary flexibility stiffness had minimal influence on it.

Summary: Fluidization at low pressure offers significant benefits for the fine chemical industry. This study investigates the behavior of bubbles and bed expansion under low pressure conditions. It is found that lower pressure leads to larger bubbles, increased bubble quantity, and higher aspect ratio. The predictability is affected by the inhomogeneous fluidization, but low pressure fluidization can generate similar bubble sizes with lower fluidizing mass compared to atmospheric pressure.
