Summary: Efficient and hydrophobic modificated ammonium polyphosphate (M-APP) and charring agent (M-CA) were prepared using sol-gel method for the preparation of water-resistant and flame-retardant polypropylene (PP) composites. The results showed improved flame retardancy and reduced heat and smoke release in the PP composites. Additionally, the PP composite with M-APP/M-CA = 3:1 exhibited excellent water resistance even after soaking in 70 degrees water for 168 hours.

Summary: Polylactic acid (PLA) is a bioplastic that can be derived from biomass resources and has the potential to replace petroleum-based polymer materials. However, PLA is flammable and the droplet phenomenon during combustion is a disadvantage. In this study, a core-shell flame retardant was prepared using polyacrylamide (PAM)/sodium alginate (SA) coated ammonium polyphosphate (APP) and blended with PLA to improve its flame retardancy and toughness.

Summary: By grafting a flame retardant onto the polymer chain, flame-retardant organic gel electrolytes were fabricated with good ionic conductivity, flame retardant ability, and adjustable mechanical strength. Compared to traditional liquid electrolytes, gel electrolytes show better electrochemical properties and can work normally in a wider temperature range. The multiple advantages of gel electrolytes expand the applications in ionic conductor and energy storage devices.

Summary: In order to demonstrate the influence of core-shell structure of microencapsulated ammonium polyphosphate (MCAPPs) on flame resistance and smoke inhibition efficiency of polymer composites, four types of MCAPPs with unilaminar or bistratal shells were fabricated and used to make flame retarded Poly (butyleneadipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) composites. The MCAPP with a cross-linked beta-cyclodextrin outer layer (MFAPP-CD1) exhibited the highest flame resistance efficiency. The PBAT composite with 75% PBAT and 25% MFAPP-CD1 showed the highest char residue and densest char layer, as well as the lowest pHRR and THR, decreasing by 77.4% and 76.9% compared to PBAT. Meanwhile, it also demonstrated excellent smoke inhibition effect with the lowest SPR and TSP, due to the weakened catalytic effect of Ammonium polyphosphate (APP) on carbonization agent.

Summary: In this study, a biobased flame retardant APP@CS@HNT was used to enhance the flame retardancy of PLA composites. The addition of the flame retardant resulted in higher limiting oxygen index value and vertical burning rating, as well as a decrease in peak heat release rate and total heat release. Furthermore, the smoke suppression performance of the PLA composites was improved.

Summary: Silica-coated limestone (SCL) microcapsules were successfully synthesized and incorporated into acrylic resin to produce fire-retardant coatings. The morphology and chemical composition of the microcapsules were confirmed by SEM and FTIR. The performance of the coatings in terms of mechanical properties, flame retardancy, and thermal stability was investigated extensively using various tests. The results showed that the introduction of SCL microcapsules improved adhesion strength, hardness, and flame retardancy while reducing flame spread ratings, smoke production, and heat release rate.

Summary: In this study, two hierarchically structured bio-based flame retardants (FRs) were engineered to improve the flame retardancy of magnesium hydroxide (MH) in styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) asphalt. The addition of these bio-based FRs significantly improved the flame retardancy and smoke suppression properties of SBS asphalt. Moreover, the bio-based FRs enhanced the anti-aging and anti-deformation performance of SBS asphalt.
