In recent years, there has been concern in the soft body armor community that copolymer fibers based on 5-amino-2-(p-aminophenyl)-benzimidazole can release hydrochloric acid, which is present in these fibers as a by-product of the manufacturing process. The presence of acids could potentially be detrimental to other fibers that might come in contact with these materials. In an effort to examine this issue, a study was designed to investigate the release of acid in different environments from these fibers. During the first phase of the study, fibers were exposed to water and pH decreases were observed. While immersed in deionized water, two of the fiber samples studied released a sufficient amount of acid to drop the pH of the solution from approximately pH 6.0 to approximately pH 3.0 in less than 10 d at room temperature. Further ion-selective electrode studies of chloride ion released from these fibers indicated that hydrochloric acid may not be the species responsible for this pH reduction. In a second phase of the investigation, fibers were exposed to water vapor in an elevated temperature environment (conditions were 65 degrees C, 80% RH). While the pH reduction released by the water vapor exposure was substantially less than observed in the submersion phase, a reduction in the yarn tensile strength of some of the fibers was observed during this phase of the study. In a third phase, fibers were exposed in a dry oven (less than 5% RH) at 65 degrees C. Almost no pH reduction or strength reduction was observed. Molecular spectroscopy was also performed to better understand the effect of elevated temperature and moisture environments on these fibers. Published by Elsevier Ltd.

Summary: This study investigates the chemical degradation and physical changes of thermally aged UHMMPE fibers, aiming to improve the lightweight and soft UHMMPE inserts used in ballistic-resistant body armor. The results demonstrate a decrease in the molar mass of the fibers and changes in their crystalline morphology, which negatively affect their performance.

Effect of Aging on Unidirectional Composite Laminate Polyethylene for Body Armor

Summary: There is an increasing use of flexible unidirectional composite laminates in the construction of ballistic-resistant body armor. These laminates are made up of multiple layers of hexagonally packed high-performance fibers and low modulus matrix. The tensile behavior of an ultra-high molar mass polyethylene flexible laminate aged at accelerated conditions was investigated and showed less than 10% degradation in tensile strength, indicating high reliability for armor made from this material.

Fluoroalkyl trimethoxysilane route to hydrophobic 2K polyurethane clearcoats and their failure mechanism

Zongzheng Zuo, Shuxue Zhou

Summary: In this study, three fluoroalkyl trimethoxysilane (FATMS) additives with different chain lengths were incorporated into a two-component polyurethane clearcoat to improve its hydrophobic durability. The coatings modified with FATMS maintained their surface hydrophobicity under various conditions, but quickly lost it when exposed to both UV irradiation and/or high temperature with water. The results suggest that the FATMS route is more suitable for indoor applications at room temperature.

A green flame retardant coating based on one-step aqueous complexation of phytic acid and urea for fabrication of lightweight and high toughness flame retardant EPS insulation board

Summary: Green flame retardants have garnered attention for their environmental friendliness, but current options fall short in achieving high flame retardancy for flammable polymers and maintaining environmental protection. This study takes a two-pronged approach to address flame retardants and the flame-retardant process. An eco-friendly bio-based synergistic flame retardant (PAU), synthesized using phytic acid (PA) and urea (U), is used to create a flame retardant coating that can be directly applied to any surface shape using polydopamine as an adhesive. The resulting EPS-PAU exhibits excellent flame retardancy, smoke suppression, and light weight while only slightly increasing the density.
