Summary: Synthetic textiles are a major source of microplastic fibers, with weathering being identified as a contributing process to their formation and presence in the environment. UV-light-induced artificial weathering of polyester fabrics resulted in the formation of microplastic fibers matching the size of the fibers in the textiles, as well as other shapes of microplastic fibers. The quantity of released microplastics significantly increased with weathering, with weathered fabrics potentially being 20-40 times larger sources of microplastic fibers compared to washing studies.

Summary: Despite the attention given to natural fibers, their limited performance and poor durability in humid environments prevent them from fully replacing synthetic fibers as reinforcement for structural composites. This study investigates how exposure to a humid/dry cycle affects the mechanical response of epoxy laminates reinforced with flax and glass fibers. The presence of glass fibers in the stacking sequence significantly stabilizes the mechanical performance of composites during the humid/dry cycle. Tailored hybridization of natural fibers with glass fibers is a suitable approach to extend the service-life of natural fiber reinforced composites in discontinuous humid conditions.

Summary: Nucleic acid-based materials have great potential for antimicrobial drug delivery. This study focuses on the stability and antibacterial properties of micellar nanocarriers derived from amphiphilic DNA strands against bacterial biofilms. By using a cationic amphiphilic antibiotic, the stability of the micelles is enhanced, their antibacterial activity remains intact, and they can penetrate bacterial biofilms and impact their metabolic activity. The PMB micelles are also highly safe and biocompatible, making them suitable for application against P. aeruginosa biofilm-colonized skin wounds.

Summary: The main goal of this paper is to evaluate the reversibility of glass fiber reinforced polymers (GFRPs) under discontinuous exposure to aggressive environmental conditions, typical of marine applications. The GFRP is aged in humid conditions for 15 and 30 days and then stored under controlled dry conditions for up to 21 days. The water uptake and flexural properties of the material are monitored throughout the humid/dry cycle, and the morphology of fractured samples is analyzed to understand the evolution of properties.

Summary: This article introduces an effective nanocarrier-mediated drug delivery method that overcomes limitations in the drug delivery process. By synthesizing a self-therapeutic copolymer, the nanocarrier is able to hierarchically disassemble in the tumor microenvironment, and possesses tumor specificity and improved circulation times. Experimental results demonstrate that this nanocarrier can effectively release drugs and exhibit cytotoxicity on tumor cells, suggesting its potential as an anti-tumor agent.

Summary: In this study, poly(p-dioxanone-co-n-alkyl substituents delta-lactone) (PDRVL) copolymers with different side chains were synthesized and their thermal, crystalline, and mechanical properties were investigated. The copolymers exhibited high decomposition temperature and crystallinity, making them suitable as thermoplastic polymers. The mechanical properties of the copolymers can be controlled by adjusting the structure of the comonomer. Additionally, the introduction of hydrophobic monomers reduced the hydrophilicity of the copolymers.

Summary: There is an increasing use of flexible unidirectional composite laminates in the construction of ballistic-resistant body armor. These laminates are made up of multiple layers of hexagonally packed high-performance fibers and low modulus matrix. The tensile behavior of an ultra-high molar mass polyethylene flexible laminate aged at accelerated conditions was investigated and showed less than 10% degradation in tensile strength, indicating high reliability for armor made from this material.

Summary: In this study, three fluoroalkyl trimethoxysilane (FATMS) additives with different chain lengths were incorporated into a two-component polyurethane clearcoat to improve its hydrophobic durability. The coatings modified with FATMS maintained their surface hydrophobicity under various conditions, but quickly lost it when exposed to both UV irradiation and/or high temperature with water. The results suggest that the FATMS route is more suitable for indoor applications at room temperature.

Summary: Green flame retardants have garnered attention for their environmental friendliness, but current options fall short in achieving high flame retardancy for flammable polymers and maintaining environmental protection. This study takes a two-pronged approach to address flame retardants and the flame-retardant process. An eco-friendly bio-based synergistic flame retardant (PAU), synthesized using phytic acid (PA) and urea (U), is used to create a flame retardant coating that can be directly applied to any surface shape using polydopamine as an adhesive. The resulting EPS-PAU exhibits excellent flame retardancy, smoke suppression, and light weight while only slightly increasing the density.
