Summary: This study confirmed that spoilage bacteria can enter the VBNC state and identified a case of beer spoilage caused by VBNC Pediococcus damnosus cells using a novel procedure. The combination of genomic sequencing, flow cytometry, and routine culturing can provide direct evidence of VBNC cells in spoiled food samples and aid in further research on food safety issues caused by VBNC microbes.

Summary: Pyricularia oryzae is a plant pathogenic fungus that severely affects rice production. Melanin is essential for the development and virulence of P. oryzae, as confirmed through gene knockout and overexpression studies. Buf1 may play a rate-limiting role in melanin biosynthesis in strain 70-15.

Summary: This study employed marker-assisted breeding to introgress multiple genes for resistance against biotic stresses and aroma into elite rice maintainers and restorers. As a result, improved lines with high resistance and aroma traits were successfully developed, offering important prospects for rice breeding and innovation.

Summary: Rice cultivation worldwide is severely affected by blast disease caused by Magnaporthe oryzae, resulting in significant yield loss. To combat this, the marker-assisted introduction of blast-resistant genes has been proposed as a rapid strategy. This study successfully demonstrated the introgression of blast resistance genes into an elite rice cultivar using marker-assisted methods, resulting in lines with high levels of resistance against blast disease.

Summary: Hybrid rice technology has the potential to increase yield by 15% to 20% compared to pure line varieties, and the key to its success lies in the development of superior parental lines. To improve blast resistance in hybrid rice, crosses were made with donors containing two major blast resistance genes. The resulting F(1) generation was confirmed for hybridity and selected plants were further advanced through backcrossing and selfing. The identified restorer lines with Pi9 and Pi54 genes could contribute to the development of rice hybrids with improved blast resistance, essential for sustainable rice production and food security.

Summary: The study reveals that liver cancer patients undergoing transplantation have lower selenium and SELENOP levels compared to healthy subjects, particularly those with ethanol toxicity as the etiology. Non-survivors show a decreasing trend in selenium concentrations, indicating a pronounced selenium deficit in severe liver disease necessitating organ replacement. A recovering selenium status post-surgery is associated with positive prognosis, suggesting that selenium supplementation could support recovery.

Summary: The study focused on identifying LAB isolated from Moroccan raw camel milk and assessing their probiotic features and fermentation profile. The LAB strains demonstrated high tolerance to gastrointestinal conditions, strong attachment abilities, and antimicrobial activity against various pathogenic bacteria. Pediococcus pentosaceus strains were identified as the most promising probiotics for functional milk fermentation.

Summary: Autochthonous lactic acid bacteria from spontaneously fermented cucumbers were isolated and identified. Two selected strains, Lactiplantibacillus plantarum NPL 1258 and Pediococcus pentosaceus NPL 1264, showed promising functional and technological attributes when used as a mixed-species starter for controlled lactic acid fermentation of native cucumber variety. Their use resulted in faster acidification and improved sensory evaluation of the fermented cucumbers.

Summary: The arms race co-evolution drives rapid adaptive changes in pathogens and host immune systems. Plant intracellular NLR immune receptors play a crucial role in detecting effector variants delivered by pathogens, triggering immune responses to halt colonization. The molecular mechanisms underlying natural variation in effector recognition by NLRs are starting to be elucidated, shedding light on how different NLR receptor alleles functionally converge to extend recognition specificity to pathogen effectors.
