Population Estimation Methods for Free-Ranging Dogs: A Systematic Review

The understanding of the structure of free-roaming dog populations is of extreme importance for the planning and monitoring of populational control strategies and animal welfare. The methods used to estimate the abundance of this group of dogs are more complex than the ones used with domiciled owned dogs. In this systematic review, we analyze the techniques and the results obtained in studies that seek to estimate the size of free-ranging dog populations. Twenty-six studies were reviewed regarding the quality of execution and their capacity to generate valid estimates. Seven of the eight publications that take a simple count of the animal population did not consider the different probabilities of animal detection; only one study used methods based on distances; twelve relied on capture-recapture models for closed populations without considering heterogeneities in capture probabilities; six studies applied their own methods with different potential and limitations. Potential sources of bias in the studies were related to the inadequate description or implementation of animal capturing or viewing procedures and to inadequacies in the identification and registration of dogs. Thus, there was a predominance of estimates with low validity. Abundance and density estimates carried high variability, and all studies identified a greater number of male dogs. We point to enhancements necessary for the implementation of future studies and to potential updates and revisions to the recommendations of the World Health Organization with respect to the estimation of free-ranging dog populations.

Summary: This study evaluated the effectiveness of Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) vaccine as a tool against SARS-CoV-2 based on the concept of trained immunity. A multicenter, double-blinded, randomized clinical trial recruited health care workers (HCWs) in Brazil. The incidence rates of COVID-19, clinical manifestations, absenteeism, and adverse events among HCWs receiving BCG vaccine (Moreau or Moscow strains) or placebo were compared. BCG vaccine-mediated immune response before and after implementing specific vaccines for COVID-19 (CoronaVac or COVISHIELD) was analyzed using Cox proportional hazard and linear mixed effect modeling.

Development of quantitative PCR and digital PCR for the quantification of Leishmania infantum in dogs

Summary: In this study, qPCR and ddPCR were used to quantify the parasite load in spleen samples from dogs infected with Leishmania (L.) infantum. The results showed 100% agreement between the two methods. These tools are important for the detection of L. infantum in dogs and humans, and ddPCR, as a new tool, can provide more in-depth information about parasitic loads and the pathogenesis of leishmaniasis.

Summary: This study describes the clinical and epidemiological characteristics of tegumentary leishmaniasis (TL) cases in Brazil and analyzes the spatial and temporal patterns of incidence and risk across regions and federative units. The overall incidence rate for the period was 226.41 cases/100,000 inhabitants. TL showed a declining trend in Brazil, except for the Southeast where rates have increased since 2014. The disease was concentrated in the North region, with Acre state leading in incidence. TL primarily occurred in rural areas and among men of working age.

Summary: The interaction between free-roaming dogs and humans has a significant impact on the well-being and behavior of both species. This study demonstrates that the spatial distribution of dogs in an urban environment is influenced by the availability of food provided by the human population. Dogs are more likely to stay closer to community feeders than commercial food outlets. Understanding this distribution is crucial for developing policies to control zoonoses and improve the welfare of free-roaming dogs.

Summary: Background: Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is a critical public health problem in over ninety countries, and control measures in Brazil have been insufficient. A chimeric protein called rMELEISH was developed for the accurate diagnosis of VL in dogs and humans. In trials, rMELEISH showed 100% sensitivity and specificity in distinguishing VL cases from other diseases and healthy samples. These preliminary results suggest that rMELEISH has potential for future diagnostic studies in the field.

Modeling the Climatic Suitability of COVID-19 Cases in Brazil

Summary: Research indicates that climate can impact the distribution, incidence, and fatality rates of COVID-19. In this study, an ensemble niche modeling approach was used to project the climatic suitability of COVID-19 cases in Brazil. Various climate data, including temperature, precipitation, and humidity, were incorporated into seven statistical algorithms to assess the climate suitability. The study found that temperature range and precipitation seasonality significantly influenced the distribution of COVID-19 cases in Brazil.
