Summary: This study highlights the importance of both the physicochemical properties of nanoparticles and the biophysical stimuli from the cellular microenvironment in regulating cellular uptake capacity. Additionally, the morphology and size of colonies were also found to impact the cellular uptake capacity of nanoparticles, with larger colonies showing more endocytosed nanoparticles.

Summary: Seed priming with nanoparticles is an environmentally-friendly solution for improving crop growth and mitigating environmental stress. This study investigates the uptake of zinc oxide nanoparticles during seed priming and its effects on seed germination. The results show that nanoparticle concentration and ionic strength are the main factors influencing the uptake of nanoparticles and their biological effects on seed germination. This approach can promote the safe design of nanomaterials for sustainable agriculture.

Summary: It is challenging to deliver specific drugs or gene editing techniques into cells through cellular uptake mechanisms. This study presents a bioinspired material approach where nanoparticles are located at the ventral side of cells adhering to engineered extracellular matrices. The effect of matrix stiffness on cell adhesion and particle internalization is investigated, and it is found that softer substrates promote higher levels of particle uptake. Furthermore, the activation of clathrin-mediated endocytosis pathway regulates the sensitivity of cellular particle uptake to matrix stiffness.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of different types of silica nanoparticles on the properties of nanocomposites for guided bone regeneration. It found that silica nanoparticles with higher specific surface area exhibited greater chemical activity and the presence of hydroxyl groups, while those with lower specific surface area showed lower chemical activity and lacked hydroxyl groups on the surface.

Summary: In this study, a novel nano-coating dry dispersion method was introduced and compared to conventional sonication in water to evaluate their effect on hydration and mechanical properties of nanoclay, nanosilica, and calcium carbonate nanoparticles in cement mixtures. The results showed that mechanical performance was sensitive to the dispersion method, influenced by changes in early hydration kinetics. The influence of the dispersion method on hydration kinetics also depended on the type of nanomaterial, with sonication in water being more favorable for silica and calcium carbonate nanoparticles, while dry dispersion was more favorable for nanoclay.

Summary: In this study, biocompatible high-capacity UiO-66 nanoparticles, mesoporous SiO2, and folate-conjugated pluronic F127 were combined to prepare a core-shell UiO-66@SiO2/F127-FA drug delivery carrier for targeted cellular uptake in cancer treatment. The thickness of the SiO2 shell was controlled by varying the duration of silanization, and silica coating improved the colloidal stability of the nanocomposites. Further modification with the conjugate of pluronic and folic acid enhanced biocompatibility and targeted the encapsulated drug to folate-expressing cancer cells.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of the mucus gel barrier on the uptake of lipid-based nanocarriers by intestinal cells. Different surfactant-based nanoemulsions were developed and assessed. The results showed that zwitterionic and polyglycerol nanocarriers had similar mucus permeation properties as polyethylene glycol nanocarriers, but they exhibited higher cellular uptake. These findings suggest that zwitterionic and polyglycerol nanocarriers have the potential to overcome both the mucus and epithelial barriers of the mucosa.

Summary: Boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT), which utilizes the fission of boron-10 upon neutron irradiation, is a promising option for radiation therapy. In this study, a novel type of mesoporous silica-based nanoparticle containing sodium borocaptate (BSH) attached to a nanocarrier was developed. The nanoparticles efficiently entered cancer cells and accumulated in the perinuclear region, displaying enhanced boron uptake compared to BSH. Tumor spheroids loaded with BSH-BPMO nanoparticles were completely destroyed upon neutron irradiation, indicating the improved BNCT efficacy of BSH-BPMO.
