Summary: Inadequate nutritional intake is common among elderly individuals, and the effects of multi-vitamin and mineral supplements (MVMS) in the Korean elderly are not well known. This study investigated the nutrition-improving effects of a single MVMS. Analysis of participants in the Korea National Health and Nutrition Survey showed that intake of MVMS with food was associated with lower rates of nutrient inadequacy compared to the food-only group. These findings suggest that micronutrient deficiency is prevalent among the Korean elderly and can be improved by MVMS intake.

Summary: Improving cancer treatment results emphasize the need to address non-cancer mortality in cancer survivors. The use of statins has shown to lower the risk of cardiovascular diseases and reduce cancer mortality. However, nearly 50% of eligible cancer survivors remain untreated, highlighting the importance of preventing atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease in this population.

Summary: The study investigated the association between Fe status and metabolic syndrome in menopausal women, finding that iron depletion was more common in premenopausal women compared to postmenopausal women. Higher serum ferritin levels were associated with an increased risk of MetS in both premenopausal and postmenopausal women. Ferritin, as a validated and widely used marker, may have clinical value in predicting and monitoring MetS during menopause, but further prospective studies are needed to clarify the causal relationship between ferritin levels and MetS.

Summary: This study analyzed the potential association between trace elements and latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) using data from a national survey. The results suggest that zinc and selenium may be associated with a reduced risk of LTBI, with higher serum zinc concentration being more significant in reducing the risk.

Summary: The study identified a significant association between menstrual cycle irregularity and suicidal ideation in Korean women, especially pronounced in younger age groups, early menarche, and working women. Suicidal ideation was subjectively evaluated based on self-reports, and causal relationships could not be established due to the study's cross-sectional design and retrospective data collection.

Summary: The incidence of tuberculosis in China has plateaued in recent years, with notifications of pulmonary TB declining by 27.7% between 2008 and 2018. The decline is faster among older people but slower in western China, resulting in an overall shift in the notification trend from decreasing to stable in 2016. Enhanced and proactive responses are recommended to achieve the End TB targets, considering population ageing and geographic disparities.

Summary: This study used data from the Eighth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey to investigate the relationship between physical activity (PA) and health-related quality of life (HR QOL). The findings showed that individuals who engaged in weekly PA, leisure-related PA, or moderate-intensity PA had higher HR QOL compared to those who did not engage in PA. This study confirmed a significant positive correlation between PA and HR QOL.

Summary: This study analyzed data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination survey to determine the relationship between noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) and dietary factors. The results showed that age was the only factor significantly associated with NIHL, and high intake of niacin and retinol, along with low intake of carbohydrates, appeared to reduce the risk of hearing loss.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the association between resting heart rate (RHR) and the prevalence of undiagnosed diabetes. The results showed that participants with higher RHR had a significantly higher prevalence of undiagnosed diabetes, and this association was stronger among younger and leaner individuals. Therefore, RHR can be used as an indicator to identify and prevent undiagnosed diabetes.

Summary: This study comprehensively evaluated the risk of lung cancer in tuberculosis survivors, considering smoking and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The results showed that tuberculosis survivors had a 1.72-fold higher risk of lung cancer compared to the control group. Current smokers with >= 20 pack-years and tuberculosis survivors with COPD had the highest risks. Risk factors for lung cancer in tuberculosis survivors included pulmonary tuberculosis, age >60 years, smoking, and the presence of COPD or asthma.
