Objective To explore the associations between different dietary patterns and semen quality in a general Asian male population. Methods Cross-sectional study. Healthy Taiwanese men aged 18 years or older who participated in a standard medical screening program from 2008-2013 run by a private firm were included in this study. Semen parameters including sperm concentration (SC), total sperm motility (TSM), progressive motility (PRM) and normal sperm morphology (NSM) were recorded. A dietary questionnaire was used to categorize the participants into 5 groups: Healthy diet, Western diet, High-carbohydrate diet, High sweet snacks & sugar-sweetened drinks and High-sodium diet. Results A total of 7282 men completed the questionnaire regarding dietary pattern, and examination of anthropometric indexes was performed and laboratory data were obtained. A high intake of a Western diet resulted in statistically linear declines of SC and NSM (P < 0.001 and P < 0.001). Similarly, a greater intake of High sweet snacks & sugar-sweetened drinks was associated with a lower SC (P = 0.001). Increased intake of a High-carbohydrate diet was related to higher prevalences of abnormal TSM and PRM (P = 0.012 and P = 0.025). Similarly, a greater intake of a High-sodium diet was correlated with an elevated prevalence of abnormal NSM (P = 0.035). Conclusions This study showed that a greater intake of a Western diet is associated with poorer SC and NSM, a High sweet snacks and sugar-sweetened drinks intake is correlated with a lower SC, and high-carbohydrate food is related to elevated prevalences of abnormal TSM and PRM.

Regulation of carcinogenesis and mediation through Wnt/β-catenin signaling by 3,3′-diindolylmethane in an enzalutamide-resistant prostate cancer cell line

Chih-Wei Tsao, Jia-Sin Li, Ya-Wen Lin, Sheng-Tang Wu, Tai-Lung Cha, Chin-Yu Liu

Summary: The combination treatment of ENZ and DIM has shown to overcome ENZ resistance in prostate cancer cells by regulating Wnt signaling to inhibit AR signaling and EMT. This co-treatment significantly inhibits cell proliferation and invasion, while increasing the expression of E-cadherin and inhibiting EMT.

Targeting S1PR1 May Result in Enhanced Migration of Cancer Cells in Bladder Carcinoma

Chin-Li Chen, En Meng, Sheng-Tang Wu, Hsing-Fan Lai, Yi-Shan Lu, Ming-Hsin Yang, Chih-Wei Tsao, Chien-Chang Kao, Yi-Lin Chiu

Summary: Metastasis is crucial for bladder cancer prognosis, and the expression of S1PR1 may be associated with poor outcomes and tumor spread. Further analysis reveals that S1PR1 is predominantly found in endothelial and immune cells, potentially affecting cancer cell adhesion and motility.

Summary: This study demonstrated that PD-L1-positive circulating tumor cells (CTCs) can serve as a predictor of treatment response to PD-L1 inhibitors and are associated with disease control rates. Dynamic changes in PD-L1-positive CTCs during therapy were found to be predictive factors of immunotherapy response and prognostic factors of disease control.

Summary: The study suggests that Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) can increase testosterone levels and improve spermatogenesis in mice with chronic kidney disease. CoQ10 treatment also alleviated poor semen quality, increased testosterone concentration, and improved antioxidant activity in the testes affected by CKD.

Determining programmed cell death ligand 1 expression in circulating tumor cells of patients with clear cell renal cell carcinoma and its correlation with response to programmed cell death protein 1 inhibitors

Summary: This study investigates the relationship between the expression of programmed cell death ligand 1 (PD-L1) on circulating tumor cells and the efficacy of immune checkpoint inhibitors in patients with clear cell renal cell carcinoma. The results show that PD-L1 expression on circulating tumor cells is not correlated with PD-L1 expression in primary tumors. However, patients with PD-L1-positive circulating tumor cells have a higher disease control rate during treatment with programmed cell death protein 1 (PD-1) inhibitors. The study also suggests that changes in circulating tumor cell numbers and PD-L1-positive circulating tumor cell counts can be used to monitor therapeutic response.

Summary: This study investigated the presence of circulating tumor cells (CTCs) in patients with penile squamous cell carcinoma (PSCC) and found that CTCs can serve as a valuable marker for differentiating PSCC from other tumors. Additionally, CTC analysis can be used for noninvasive monitoring of disease progression and prognosis, and may have a potential role in preventing overtreatment.

Summary: The study demonstrated that dextrose prolotherapy shows promising treatment results for IC/BPS, reducing bladder instability, frequent urination, improving glycosaminoglycan layer regeneration and bladder wall thickness, along with significantly enhancing CD44 receptor expression. Additionally, it reduced treatment frequency over time and improved EGF levels while reducing HGF, PIGF-1, and VEGF-D levels in patients with IC/BPS. The modulation of growth factors and cytokines suggests potential tissue remodeling effects.

Summary: This study aimed to explore the existence of circulating tumor cells (CTCs) in patients with muscle-invasive bladder cancer (MIBC) and their predictive potential for response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC). CTCs were isolated from blood samples of MIBC patients and identified as tumor origin. Patients were divided into disease control (DC) and progressive disease (PD) groups based on NAC response. In the DC group, the number of CTCs significantly decreased after four NAC cycles and were highly correlated with postoperative pathological T stage. CTCs may serve as a valuable predictive marker for NAC response in MIBC.

Summary: Research on urologic tumors requires dissociated viable samples. Improper collection may compromise data quality due to increased quantities of degraded proteins and RNA. Snap-frozen tissue samples obtained within 30 min have better cell viability and RNA quality, and transurethral biopsy of bladder tumor is considered a better method for collecting samples for further molecular oncology studies.
